Guess the Date: Blu-Ray to Kill off HD-DVD
Some experts state that HD-DVD may be around another year, while some say it won't even live to see Summer.
Question is, what date, or period do YOU think HD-DVD will die off? Some studios that supported the sinking ship have jumped, but others are willing to apperently, go down with the ship, until the last minute. My humble guess: October 13'th. Winner gets to to strut around their Bedroom/Living Room/Den, or whatever room their computer is in, and feel all big about themselves, and possibly gloat about their new-found ability to predict the future. You then get 2 first-class tickets to Reality Land, once all is said and done, to bring you back to Planet Earth. Wonder what time you think it'll go.... |

Well, seeing as Toshiba (the creator of the HD-DVD technology) has decided to stop putting further R&D into HD-DVD, I would say it wouldn't be long now:

I thought HD-DVD was already dead.

I never knew HD-DVDs existed until about 2 days ago when I saw some tucked in the corner of a shop. I always thought it was just plain old DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs to start with.

They're pretty much already dead. After Toshiba already announced they were jumping ship, I don't think there has been any chance that HD-DVD would survive anyway so everyone else threw up their hands and admitted defeat.
Also, my guess is "Who cares?" |

The HD DVD Promotion Group was dissolved last month (probably the same guys on AMDs marketing dept
). Don't know if Venturer is still making their player but I think LG said they'll continue to make their combo players. If you define dead as no more players deing made then maybe it will last to the end of the year but for everyone else the ship is sunk (no more movies except from Warner until May). But word has it there isn't enough BD capacity to go around so expect no HD Universal/Paramount titles for some time (they still haven't anounced any since jumping ships). In other news the PS3 can now decode DTS-HD MA which now means its #1 again. Now I got to rewatch the Die Hards now with loseless sound. Who's ready for HD "GET TO DA CHOPPAH!"? |

Maybe your stores had foresight into the matter. I have seen other stores who have an HD section, tiny as they are, were all Blu-Ray. |

HD-DVD is dead and there is no way around that, and it was always going to fail. Its an inferior format to Blu-Ray and inferior formats deserve to get run out of the consumer market. Out here the only places I see HD-DVD's are in 3 for $20 bargain bins.

So you were pro-betamax then (I kid). There is suppose to be big Blu-ray shortage ahead of use with Universal/Paramount on the Blu ship. Turns out HD-DVD was actually cheaper to make (but they never passed the saving to us until now).
And Nomad, by who's ready I meant not me (Predator is $28 for a single layer disc) but its on sale this week so I might be ready afterall. The Die Hards (except 4 since its only the PG-13 cut) are the only FOX movie I own ATM since I got them free with PS3. |

I'm seeing the death recently. How things suddenly change.
The HD-DVD player for the X-Box 360 is only $29.99 ($59.99 before rebate)!! It was about $200 not long ago! Yeah, it's on it's last legs, although I still see HD-DVD's being offered on newly-released movies. |

Huge shame that HD DVD died.
It was clearly made for the consumer, and not for the manufacturer. And anything that is made for the consumer is almost guaranteed to be a failure. The only way it was inferior was the copy protection, and apparently it didn't matter anyway, since Blu ray movies are being copied all over the place online anyway. HD DVD was done in by businessman bullshit security reassurance for movie makers. Consumer loses on this deal : ( Glad I didn't waste my money though.

![]() I think it was the tech nerds in Consumer Land that did in the HD-DVD, being they'd rather have 30FPS (actually 29.97) of video in progressive scan, than the choppy interlace format. I can see that being a reason. Other than that, I can't see any, either. |
