Home PC Dead
Sad news my home PC is dead, wasn't starting up yesterday, fan noise and power light but nothing on the monitor.
So I checked the cables and restarted it, now there's so sign of life at all. |

If the entire PC is dead, it's most likely that the power supply has died. Though it could also be the main board. All hope may not be lost.

Maybe he could borrow one from a work toy. Or to simplify things just borrow a work toy.

Nope I don't have a spare PSU kicking around, I wish I could "borrow" the Intel mac but its a big beast too big to sneak out under your coat.

I would get a voltage meter and check the PSU Output before disregarding it.

What on earth is that signature Doom-Dork? The third line is true. But my ISP is incorrect and I don't believe the IP is either.

Yeah, that stuff is right for me. His IP would be wrong if his ISP uses PPPoE to connect him. PPPoE is shit but tons of American DLS ISPs love it. They basically put you on a LAN and you don't get a real IP the rest of the net can see.
Of course, if he's on a LAN it could just be like you mentioned.

All of it is correct for me. Back on topic though:
I've had the same problem twice before, and each time it was the power supply. My fans didn't turn on though. It's a good idea to test that first. |

I bought a new PC last February. AMD Athlon 3000, 512mb RAM, ATI Radeon 9550. And the bloody thing has broken down FOUR times. Seriously. I've sent it back to the people who made it three times and it still doesn't work. I'm going to ask for a refund when I can be bothered.
Is that a pathetic performance from a computer or what? Back to the old Pentium 2 300 for now! Maybe I'll get another Voodoo2 off ebay, go for the SLI mode for now.. |

I've had that happen to a computer once. Well, not mine, but I got the computer that it happend too. I think it may have been stuck by lightning. Took it to best buy and they said it that the PSU and the motherboard was fried. Wasn't even a good enough computer to bother fixing so I salvaged the 128 mb a RAM and put it into my computer and the 40 gb hard drive which I plan on installing linux onto.
On the topic of fans... The fan on my xbox as been acting up lately . Makes a loud noise. I've tried cleaning it but that didn't help. I plan on checking eBay for a replacement soon. The noise goes away after it runs for a while. Luckily, it's not over heating. The temperature hasn't gone up any higher than it has before.
