Wierd Installation Procedures

I was wondering if we should follow these installation procedures or do most source ports play the WADs properly as they are?

Examples:
Eternal DOOM
H2H-Xmas
Herian II

For "Eternal Doom", you can just use -file ETERNALL.WAD, as usual. For H2H-Xmas, the installation really only uses Deusf to merge new data with doom2.wad. This is only needed for doom2.exe, and if you're using a port you can use the -file command with the WAD file(s, don't remember if there were more than one?), as usual.

Thanks for that Kristian...ya H2H-XMAS.WAD is the only one for that but I was just so frustrated by some of those weird installs especially when using XP (no DOS).

I hoped that most ports can just play 'em like they are...nice to know that they do but when you haven't seen it the way it is supposed to look it's kinda hard to tell. Most I've tried do play but stuff seemed to be missing.

I have come across some (a smallish minority) where you do need to use deusf even if you intend to play them using a port, though I don't think the two you mention fall into that category.

You can run deusf in XP - there should be no problems. If it does look like something is wrong when running one of this type of wads with a port, then what you do is this:
  • Make sure Doom2.wad and deusf.exe are in the same directory as your pwad, and that Doom.wad is not. (This is assuming it is a Doom2 pwad; if not, then make sure Doom.wad is in there.)
  • Use the command line: deusf -app yourwad.wad (where you replace "yourwad" with the actual file-name of the pwad). Note this does not alter the iwad - it adds stuff from the iwad onto the pwad. Note that you do not need to do this via a command prompt. All you need is Start - Run... and put the command line in there, but also including a path for deusf.exe. Thus if all the files are in c:\doom2, then what you'd have is: c:\doom2\deusf -app yourwad.wad
This really isn't too complex. There's just one thing you need to know (-app), and being an XP user is no obstacle at all. But in most cases even this won't be needed, of course.

Hey thanks Grazza...that doesn't seem too bad...I'll give it a try.

EDIT: lolx10 that worked like a charm...I tried it on H2H-Xmas even though it didn't need it but once you know the command and what you need in the folder it really is simple. I'm gonna look for some more pwads like that hehe.

I've remembered a couple where deusf is needed even with a port (with most ports that I have tried, at least):

Copenhagen Central Station - note the instructions in the txt
Deus Ex Machina - in that case you need to use the deh file as well - this can be loaded directly with almost all ports (don't try to load it using dehacked.exe)

Thanks Grazza for Deus Ex Machina...I tried it just the way it was first just to see the differences and then used DEUSF.

Without using DEUSF there were no light posts or surveillance cameras and there was just regular monsters. After applying DEUSF it was a totally different game...The ghost IMPs that walk through the wall and exploding Sargents where fun.

lol...I really enjoyed that...
