Networking Help

Alright, im a little confused by trying to set up a WLAN network at home at the moment. Im trying to set up so that the internet connection i have on my computer can be put onto a network so that the laptop can then pick up on the network and also access the internet.
Now what i have is the cable modem, which is plugged into my computer via ethernet and connects to the internet by the ISP's cable login software. Internet on my computer no problem. Now both my computer and the laptop have wireless cards in it, and my computer seller gave me a wireless access point, and he said i should be able to set up a network with just that.
But thing is, i have no idea how. Whenever i connect the router to the power, my computer will automatically pick up and connect to a network named "default". I looked in the instructions for the router and tried to configure it as it tells me to (via opening the web browser and typing in a certain address), but whenever i do that it gives me a page cannot be displayed error.
The wireless access point is a D-Link DWL-G700AP, and according to the guy who gave it to me said i have all the parts i need to get the network up and running. But as i have said i have no idea where i am supposed to start. Maybe if the configuration thingy for the access point worked i wouldnt have a problem getting a network all set up, but if anybody could offer any help how i can set all the SSID and WEP and whatever else i may need to get done to get the network going and internet on both computers. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes i do have that, it came with the access point in the box. However in that it says for me to connect it via cable modem-router-access point-computers. But i do not have a router, and the person who supplied me with the access point said i have all i need. So therefore i am confused.

Yeah it is somewhat vague. Have you tried just hooking the cable modems LAN cable directly to the access point unit LAN input, then try to http to it?

Yes i did try doing that, and again nothing. Maybe i should just go out and spend another $110 on a router, but i dont want to really do that if i'll keep having the same problem, and if i supposeably can already set up a network.

Well thats basically all I can suggest from this end. what else can one do other than read the docs, heh.
If it's store bought, maybe try taking it back and getting a new one first. electronics are sometimes like that, leaky cap could have popped the second you plugged it in, hard to say.

Other than that, yeah sell it/take it back and get a wireless router instead.
Or you could get a basic (cheaper wired router) and then use the wireless uplink unit.
It's purpose is basically to give wireless connectivity to a wired network.

You might be able to use 2 nic cards and icshost with it but I'm not even gonna try walking someone through that without physically being there to witness it
