The Great BOSS battle CONTEST!
Time for a new contest, this time hosted and also judged by me and Sigma (XIX IX VII XIII I).
This time the theme is simpler. You'll need to make a boss fight, and that's it. However, some guidelines are always in place in a contest: - The maps shouldn't be large at all. Some examples of good map sizes are the following: MAP07 (Dead simple), MAP30 (Icon of Sin), E2M8 (Tower of babel) and E3M8 (Dis). So while there isn't a clear size limit, large maps are frowned upon. - You can be very creative with the map. It doesn't have to necessarily be a cyberdemon or spider mastermind fight. It can be a fight against a horde of monsters, or even some hideous puzzle thingy (the wad cyberdreams comes to mind). The player may not even have to fire a shot. So creativity is definatly a bonus. A one on one fight with a cyberdemon in an arena most likely isn't enough to win the contest. The detailed rules are as follows: Port: Boom compatible Mode: Single player (you can put others if you wish, but they won't be judged) Map number: Free, as some sector tags can be used to create nice effects. So any map number will do. Custom textures and music is allowed. Custom sprites, weapons, monsters and sounds are not allowed One map per author Difficulty levels aren't required, and won't be judged There must be a readme with the wad, including at least the level name, author and map number. DEADLINE IS THE END OF 19th OCTOBER GMT Send the maps to: fatality at gmail dot com How do we judge? How well does it fit to the theme? (50%) Boss battles don't have to be frustrating pieces of crap one has to try a hundred times to get it JUST right. In many (especially modern) games boss battles are really fun and creative. Even though the doom engine may seem a bit restricting, a lot of great things can be done with it by thinking another way of doing it. Try to make a fun, creative, and possibly even a new kind of boss battle, and you'll do fine here. Good ideas are appreciated very much! How does it feel (ie. gameplay) (30%) It's kind of hard to describe this one. Basically if the map has some blatant problems (getting stuck to hallways and such stupid things) it goes here. This is kind of a joker card, as it overlaps the theme part pretty much. We'll try to keep the two parts separate, though. If you think your map is totally playable in that it works, it will probably get a good score here. Detailing (20%) As neither of the judges hold very high importance on visual quality in a map, we still thought that this should be here. Make your map pretty, and you'll get a good score, but don't waste too much effort here, as it's weighed at only 20%! Hopefully that'll give you a good idea on what you should really focus on, and what isn't so vital. This is a boss battle contest after all, not an art gallery. ![]() As always, all the entries will be appreciated, and we will give fair reviews on everyone's map (regardless of race, creed, sex, etc.). I thank in advance to everyone who decides to make a map for this contest, you already are a winner of sorts when you participate in this. ![]() HAPPY MAPPING! Sounds cool I might have an small idea for an map it might work out well I was thinking of an arena map where the player needs to fight large groups of monsters.
I think the map won't be too impressive to look at ill probably copy and paste the crap out of it

Thats a very original contest idea. Forcing the mapper NOT to use custom monsters is a big reason, making it much harder and much more creative.
Seriously, original boss fights are rare, and for a reason. But I still think with good thinking and good maping skills, we can have some very interesting map. I won't get in considering my maping skills and my extreme lack of ideas, but I'll be looking at the contest all the way to the end! |

![]() I think I will try and do something for this contest to help get myself back into the groove of mapping, plus it is a small enough affair to not suck a whole bunch of time into it to the point where it becomes boring. Should be fun. I would love to use scripting as well but that's where the limitation requires some creativity. But I shall give this a shot. |

![]() If I decide to enter, of course. |

I'm glad you like the idea, although you'll have to thank Sigma for it.

This would be a good oppurtunity to use my idea I originally had for MAP30 of the NDCP2.
Yes, I will definitely be entering this.

i might actually ahve a chance in this considering it has to be Boom compatible. I can't figure out scripting and all that other stuff that makes maps spiffy :P.
