The most amusing long word in English is Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - The fear of long words.

Oh, and Zheardok, it appears that you need to remove one of the images from your signature. We only allow one image in signatures here.

While we're on that subject, shouldn't "monosyllabic" be a shorter word?

I wonder if the person who discovered it had that phobia. In fact, I hope that person had that disorder, because then it would be even more ironic. Perhaps it was to get revenge on his parents who gave him the fear or somesuch.

There's been a ton of arguments over the longest word in language X. For example, the longest scientific word in the English language is:

Methionylglutaminylarginyltyrosylglutamylserylleuc ylphenylalanylalanylglutaminylleucyllysylglutamyla rginyllysylglutamylglysylalanylphenylalanylvalylpr olylphenylalanylyalylthreonylleucylglcycylaspartyl prolylglicylisoleucyglutamylglutaminlserylleucylly sylisoleucylaspartylthreonylleucylisoleucylglutamy lalanylglyclyalanylaspartylalanylleucyglutamylleuc ylgluycylisoleucylproluylphenylalanyserylaspartypr olylleucelalanylaspartylglycylprolylthreonylisolle ucyglutaminylasparaginylalanythreonylleucylarginyl alanylphenylalanylalanylalanylglycylvalylthreonylp rolylalanylglutaminylcysteinylphenylalanylglglutam ylmethionylleucyalanylleucylisoleucylarginylglutam inyllysylhistidylprolyuthreonylisoleucylprolylisol eucylglycylleucylleucylmethionyltyrosylalanylasbar aginylleucylvalylphenylalanylsparaginyyllysylglycy lisoleucylaspartylglutamylphenylalanylyltyrosylala nylglutaminylcysteinylglutamyllysylvalylglycylvaly lspartylserylvalylleucylvallalanylaspartylvalylpro lylvalvlglutaminylglutamylserylalanylprolylphenyla lalrginylglutaminylalanylalanylleucylarginylhistid ylasparaginylvalylalalprolylisoleucylphenylalanyli soleucylcysteinylprolyprolylaspartylalanylaspartyl aspartyspartyleucylleucylarginylglutaminylisoleucy lalanylseryltyroslglycylarginylglycyltyrosylthreon yltyrosylleucylleucylserylarginlalanylglycylvalylt hreonylglycylalanylglutamylasparaginylarginylanyla lanylleucylprolylleucylaspaaginylhistidylleucylval ylalanyllysylleucyllysylglutamyltyrosylasparagimyl alanylalanyprolylprolylleucylglutaminylglycylphenl alanylglycylisoleyucylserylalanylprolylaspartylglu taminylvalyllysylalanylalanylisoleucylalspartylala nylglycylalanylalanylglycylalanylasoleucylserylgly cylserylalanylisoleucylbalyllysylisoleucylisoleucy lglutamylglutaminylhistidylasparaginylisoleucylglu tamylpronylglutamyllysylmethionylluecylalanylalany oeucyllysylvalylphenylalanylvalylglutamilylprolylm ethionyllysylalanylalanylthreonylarginylserine.

It's a Tryptophan synthetase A protein, an enzyme that has 267 amino acids, and makes a record of 1,909 letters. It is the term for the formula C1289H2051N343O375S8. Heh, just imagine writing the equation for creating that compound.

Did anyone else know the forum inserts a space automatically after 50 characters in a row without a space? Certainly seems to be the case with that long word...

But worse, think of how terrible it'd be for the ones giving the kids the word!

Spelling Bee Host: Okay, your word is Methionylglutaminylarginyl...(3 minutes later)...threonylarginylserine.

Contestant: Uh... um.... could you use that in a sentence, please?
AAARGH.

Actually, it isn't. Having an accent where you put it hurts the basic portuguese rules.

Você só pode por acento em uma das 3 últimas sÃ*labas.

That's a common mistake when dealing with "mamente" ended words.

"may I have an origin, oh and a definition please?"

BTW, that really long word has other words in there repeated too! It just keeps repeating the same words over and over and over and over.

Actually, it's "aspartyl". The reason different words keep repeating is because the word describes how the substance is built, piece by piece, following a logical scheme.
