The flash has made the second picture look a bit weird.

Weird in what way? Colours or shadows?

Shadows.

It distracts from the picture, knowing that some shadows aren't natural. Also it makes the objects seem to have a strange border.

Without buying expensive studio lights or waiting for a sunny day there's not much you can do without using the flash.

You can also just have a steady hand and use longer exposure time.

Shouldn't it do the trick?

Only if your camera supports long exposure times, mine doesn't let you set that option :S

Alright, that could make it a bit more difficult.

Then again, if you have a digital camera, doesn't just lightening the picture afterwards with some kind of an editor work?

You can do that to a certain extent but in the information isn't there in the dark areas it just starts to look pixel-ly.

Oh yeah, that's true.

Overall, you'll get 8+ for your excuse of the shadow.
