W_GetNumForName: PLAYPAL not found!

why does this always pop up when I try to play doom legacy and how can I fix it?

A simple forum search would have given you the answers.

Chances are you havent selected an actual IWAD in the Game Mode panel. If you have (eg c:\games\legacy\doom2.wad), it may be that either the iwad is unpatched or corrupt.

Putting the IWAD in the Legacy directory can help too.
