Question Sound makes Doom slow down

Playing the oldschool Doom games for a bit before I start Doom3
I haven't played my copy of Ultimate Doom on this computer since yesterday... the problem is, when I have my audio settings at the default (which are the only settings that seem to work), my game slows down to a pathetic pace when sound effects of any kind are generated... there is no music present in any case as well. Yes I have checked the settings in the game.
Can anyone help me out? Any help is appeciated.

Are you using DooM95.exe and what is your OS? I vaguely remember that there were sound issues with it, but I can't point you in the right direction. An alternative would be to use a source port, such as ZDooM, Legacy, or DoomsDay. These source ports not only fully support sound and music in DooM, but also offer high-resolution graphics. Plus a host of other features not found in "vanilla" DooM.

In Win XP, the DOS sound emulation doesn't work well for Doom(2).exe. Some people find that using VDMS solves the problem (but most don't, unfortunately).

If you have an old Windows 98 (or earlier OS) machine, then it will work fine in that. Otherwise, your options are to run Doom(2).exe without sound effects (or with PC Speaker sound effects) or to use a port. Note that some ports make significant changes to the behaviour and/or appearance of the game, which you may or may not consider desirable.

Thanks for the replies...
Doom95, actually, won't let me use the mouse, apparently because I'm running XP . It does however play audio perfectly, unlike the DOS version.
So I guess I'll just try a port for now, unless someone can solve either my sound or mouse problem (or both ).
Thanks again!
