Perhaps a moderator could fix this?
I have tried Doom95 (if that counts as a port) Zdoom, Doom Legacy, jDoom and Risen3d. Doom95 - This program is a joke. It offers even less features than the original doom did, and it's unbelievably glitchy. It can't even do the fuzz effect correctly, and shows a thick black line in all fuzzy objects. This is as bad as it can get. ZDoom - Zdoom was the next port I tried, and I was quite happy with it, but only because I compared it to Doom95. Thirdperson was a wonderful feature, but because of how pixelized the sprites look up close it didn't really work and looked rather cheap. The custom appearences were a great idea for multiplayer, but multiplayer is so laggy that it's not possible to play. I also found it greatly disorienting and slightly nausiating the way the screen disstorted when I looked the slightest bit up or down. This was a good while ago though, and I don't know if they improved these problems. Perhaps someone could enlighted me? Doom Legacy - I was bored of ZDoom so I decided to look for something different, and found Doom Legacy. I disliked it because of it's numerious glitches, such as text running off the screen. The program was also difficult to navigate and had a very unrealiable startup program, which I decided wasn't even worth using. Overall, I disliked Doom Legacy because it wasn't stable enough. I tried it again recently to see if it had gotten anywhere, but it hasn't. jDoom - I still remember the shock I got when I first started up jDoom. The 3d models alone would be enough, but there's also high resolution texture addons and a great overall oh-so-that's-what-that's-supposed-to-be look. Even my brother, who has no interest in Doom admitted that the graphics were very impressive. Things look normal when I look up and down, and it's very stable. In fact, I've absolutely never had it crash on me except when testing out my defective maps. I was very dissapointed that it did not have a third person though, I think that would have look amazing on it. Risen3d - I had been looking for this so-called "Boomsday" for a long time, only to discover that it had separated from Doomsday to form its own port. I was disspointed, but decided to try it anyway. It had some great features for organizing custom levels, but the whole reason why I got it in the first place was because of it's Boom support, something that it didn't really have. Enemies were not able to see me though this bar door objects (which they obviously were supposed to the way the map is set up), and when walking under a bridge I magically teleported up on top of it. In the end, I abandoned this port because it was glitchy, a lot of addons I wanted to use didn't work with it, and it wasn't at all what I expected it to be. So after comparing all these, I'd have to say that jDoom is the best, by far. |

This is not a well organised poll. Or a good idea for one either. Basically, the topic is a tightrope above a flame pit.
I fail to see how Zdoom, probably the most widely used and popular sourceport has failed to make it into the list (or is it the repeated Jdoom?). Personally, I mainly use Legacy, but I have a copy of most of the Doom ports on my computer. It's stupid to let port preferences cause you to miss out on all the content released specifically for other ports - it's all Doom at the end of the day. jDoom has my vote, the flexibility of jDoom is very large (even when it comes to mapping).
You all know zdoom has slopes and legacy has 3d floors, but jDoom has it's own things, things like what fraggle script can only achieve (only jDoom is easier to code). On top of that are the very impressive engine enhancements that makes doom look like it comes from the year 2003 ![]() If you'd ask me when coming to overall superiority jDoom would win

For everyday gaming, options and reliability I go with Legacy.
If I want nice 3D monstors, cool lighting and special effects, I go with jDoom. Overall, its Legacy. |
