Post PCGamer: of Unreal 2 & Morrowind

I just got my April issue of PCGamer

They rated Unreal 2 a 72%

"Final Verdict

Highs: Gorgeous graphics; High production values;Cool new weapons; Expansive leval design

lows: Cookie cutter storyline; redundancy in mission objectives; Ocasionally just plain dull.

Bottom line: Pretty to look at, but doesn't have alot going on upstairs."

Morrowind: Elder scrolls III is going to have another expansion pack in May called "Bloodmoon".

PC Gamer I don't read anymore. I think Unreal 2 should get an 80%

I was going to make a Bloodmoon topic. It looks really cool and I can't wait to play it.

It depends on if you like a massive RPG in a First Person perspective with awesome graphics and a quadzillion quests to do and places to go or not.

Daggerfall had a world twice the size of the UK so I don't want to think about how big Morrowind is. I wonder how you make VIS data for a world so big. Is it divided into seperate maps?

I never played Daggerfall so I can't compare, though I suspect Morrowind is a bit smaller. The fascinating thing about the geography in Morrowind is the Ocean. This dude made a mod that's offshore. It actually takes you 5 minutes of walking to get out there using a water walking spell. I read that you can walk forever and the engine just keeps making water. I'm not sure if that's true or not but nobody has ever found the edge that I know of.

There are no actual maps but something called cells. So your walking along and the game will pause as it loads the xtra info it needs for the area your entering. You don't really notice any difference in the landscape....... meaning you don't see a stand of trees suddenly appear after a load or anything like that. One of the things that impresses me big time is the ground textures. The textures flow nicely from grass to rock to volcanic ash looking stuff without a seam. I wonder how they did that on such uneven ground. It truely is an amazing game that lets you go where you want to go without any of that linear crap.

NOOOoooooooooooooo it's not one of them mmorpg's!!! It's 100% Single Player all the way with 0% Multiplayer support ever. The game would run like a sumo with cement boots over the internet.

LOL My kind of game.

So basically, it uses seemless map transitions. Hehehe, that's cool. As for the ocean going on forever, that's an old trick you can find in a lot of flight sims and driving games. If you leave the pre-designed map, the terrain will go on forever (except in some games where it wraps around).

The ground texture thing is common to new games. They can even have the terrain change and still have seemless texture-mapping. It's cool. Generals has that kind of stuff if you turn up the graphics. I even have a crappy 3D version of Scorched Earth that does that.

I never played a mmorpgwhatchamacallit and probably never will. Monthly fees suck the monkeys ass.

The Morrowind developers even release a free plugin for the game now and then so that's cool. I'm really looking forward to the Bloodmoon mission pack because you'll get to stomp around in the snow hoping a werewolf doesn't scare the shit outta you.

Yeah and you have to go out and get bitten by a Werewolf just like the Vampire option in Morrowind.

Yep I never tried it myself but you can become a Vampire and thus get to do a bunch of quests just for the Vampire part of the game.

Yup you can fly with a levitation spell, or a scroll, a potion or make yourself an amulet or ring of levitating. It costs a lot of coin to have an enchanter enchant a custom ring, sword, shield, boots, belt or whatever you want. If your character has a high enough enchant skill you can make your own magical weapons and you even name them whatever you want. I made a weapon I named 'dreadkatana' from a daedric daikatana I found that does frost, fire and shock damage besides the weapons normal damage. The first sword I had enchanted I called 'Frostblade' I made from a two handed nordic sword that does frost damage. You have to have a soul gem with a soul in it to enchant stuff though. The more powerfull the soul the better items you can make. Of course you also find lots of enchanted items in tombs and all over the place. You might find a cool axe or whatever in a tree stump in the swamp.

You can make custom character classes so you could make a Ninja character with major skills in marksmanship, destruction, and other Ninja like skills.
