Arrow There should be a DooM editing tutorial site here at New DooM.

The title pretty much says it all.

I believe that there should be a site set up here at New DooM dedicated solely to DooM related tutorials. Such a site would be an invaluable resouce for users wishing to do any editing for DooM or any of the DooM ports, and would make an excellent addition to the New DooM domain.

The tutorial site would have a wide variety of tutorials in several categories, ranging from the very basic (What is a Vertex?) to the more advanced (Adding special effects to levels). It would also include tutorial on how to use specific editors for wad editing, graphics, sounds, etc., and tutorials on editing for specific DooM ports would be added as well (How to build 3D floors in Legacy, How to use fraggle script, How to implement angled floors in ZDooM, etc.,).

Creating all the tutorials for this site would too massive an undertaking for a single person. It would be much better to have multiple authors, with each one creating tutorials sest suited to their expertese. I suggest using the following set up:

One person sets up and runs the site, acting much as the editor and chief of a newspaper. This is the guy who gets the final say as to what gets added to the site.

Any person who wishes to submit a tutorial can create one using his html editor. Although there should be some guidelines as to what may or may not be included on the page/s, the author would be given the freedom to make the page/s as simple or ornate as he chooses and in any style. Once the tutortial is completed, the author would then place the tutorial and all of its associated graphics into a zip file (or zip files if neccessary) and e-mail it to an address here at New DooM (i.e. tutorials@newdoom.com).

Once received, the editor of the site will look over the tutorial to make sure that it is correct and fully understandable (If it isn't, he may ask the author to make the apropriate changes, or reject it altogether.). He will then make whatever minor changes he feels are needed, add or adjust the appropriate links, and upload the tutorial to the site.

Tutorials could be revised or removed at any time. If a new tutorial is submitted that is better than an existing tutorial on the same subject, then the older tutorial will be replaced by the newer one. If an author makes a major revision on a tutorial written by another author, then the names of both authors should be displayed in the tutorial (Written by xxx. Revised by yyy Month Day, Year.)

I think that a system like this would be the best way to build a tutorial site. It would be a slow process, but eventually the site would be very impressive, and a valuable addition to New DooM.

What do you guys think?

I want in! I would love to help, but recruiting employees are up to you. Since Doom2Rankings soon may be closed, and I'll be unemployed..

Not a bad idea.
Once that's going, we'll have yet an other valuable Newdoom section to draw in the users out there, and help when we need it.

Now to hear from the Grand Master....

Well I might have to close SND... as the clan has basically come to a stand still due to lack of competition (in our hemisphere) and lack of servers. I wanted to contribute some graphics for the site design, but it looks like looney2ner has taken that job. Can I be of any help?

Absolutely! We need all the help we can get. First and foremost we could use written tutorials on any topic. After the site opens, I hope that we'll get feedback and suggestions for page design and stuff so that it's as useful as possible.

Uggh, gotta go work on the site some more. Later!

Flash. Tons and tons of Flash. Make virtual tutorials too. Have people practice building steps, lifts, etc., all before the actual attempt on an editor.

Like this'll fly....

Nah, I was going to have live jull-screen mpeg video and hire Jennifer Aniston and Mathew Perry to do the demonstrations.

Did anyone see the video they did for Win95?

Rick, maybe you can put some sort of Flash or Shockwave vids in. I've seen how useful this can be, as you can see AND read/listen how to make things work people don't understand.
