Question Should I Use A Better Editor? What's Your Opinion?

Okay, I'm just thinking out loud here. I've only used one editor my entire life, and at the time, when I started editing, the DEU programs seemed to be the best. Now I'm using WinDeu32 on my newer sytem with windows XP. It works great....most of the time. Besides a few errors(Unable to read from file;crashes WinDeu32 and corrupts my wad, along with funky looking lines and sectors after I do:who knows what?) I't can do what most editors out there can; with the exception of floating stairs and maybe other stuff i don't know about. Question to you pros.... Is there a better editor out there similar to WinDeu32 or should I just start using another one?
Now Before you answer....I've taken a look at Wad Author, and it seems great, but one thing I've noticed is that it doesn't let you get more specific with what your working on, ie vertex, linedef, sector and thing modes(These of which are definately my favorite things about WinDeu32). It is simple, select something, and edit.

Okay, discuss.

Actually Wad Author does let you work on specific stuff, just hit S, T, V, L, N for Sectors, Things, Vertices, Lines, and All (N).

I have no idea how WinDeu works so I couldn't reccomend a new proggy, but I'm sure someone here can. Are you mostly editing Legacy? Cuz that can require some special consideration.

You might want to try Why. It is (in my opinion, at least, but I'm biased) at least as good as WinDEU. WinDEU has a couple of features Why does not have (some of them being unexplainable crashes ) but Why does a lot that WinDEU can't.

Just click the link on my sig to get more info.

You might want to keep an eye on Why. I use both WinDEU32 5.24 and WinDEU32 5.99b1.

5.24 for the majority of editing and 5.99b1 for when I need a specific linedef # or when I do my final texture alignment.

I use DETH too but I dont think it works in XP (Im still on win98se). I also own Deepsea but until I upgrade my OS and cant use DETH anymore I will only use that for specific tasks. I still think Deepsea is a good investment.

I think Deepsea will let you use DEU methods. If what Rellik says is true it seems Wad Author does too.

No, WadAuthor won't. It would be close except that you can't draw lines like you can in DEU. You have to use sector prefabs to make all the areas to begin with. Some people like it, but I just get piles of errors when I try and really move stuff around then -- by errors, I mean in the wad itself.

I haven't really tried out Why yet.

I use DeePsea. It's a great editor. You can use it like DEU if you want and it supports all the new port stuff. It has a neat line-drawing tool that's faster than the DEU way, but it's got a bit of a learning curve to avoid making errors with it. It also has loads of buttons and toolbars, which really confuses some people. Also has an 800 linedef limit on the shareware version. I bought it and love it though.

Don't use DoomED. It's the silliest editor I've ever seen! Took me 10 minutes to find a way to actually edit something!

However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)
