My hard disk was not big enough. So, I have buyed a new one (40 Gig)... Cool!
Old Disk one: C, D, E, F Disk two: G To don't lost all my work to embed my Windows 98 SE, I had decided to partition my new hard disk... I put it in place of the Disk one, after having copied all the Disk one bites... No launch! I use Fdisk one more time to look at my partitions... Ok: I haven't made any principal one! Stupid Jive! No problem: Fdisk at work... Format at work... Ok! Now: C = ok! D, E, F = ok! G... Hey! Where is my stuff on G ? I have formated it! So, I have lost ALL my current work! And I had a lot of prepared stuff... I have a backup of it on my son's comput, but 3 monthes old! And my son live with its mother since one month... I have to wait a little... My hope is that the technical man will be able to recover some stuff to morrow, but it's not sure at all ! I'm sad and afraid... What time is it?... 3 oclock? ... It was 21 when I have made this horror... Will I be able to sleep? But I must go to bed, now... Bye my friends! l8r ! ------------------ ------------------------------------ "Doom Legacy Wads" aka DLW This site is a gift! It's a good idea to backup before you mess with disk partitions. Especially when you have a physical drive split into multiple logical drives.

If it wasnt for microsoft beign stupid, you'd write "unformat g:" at the command line and your data would come back.

that's probably because windows is stupid when naming drives... sometimes the 1st partition on the 2nd hd goes to d: sometimes it takes the 1st letter not yet assigned... I suppose your problem was the drive name has been changed from g: to d: when you swapped your 2 drives...

Exactly my friend!
I have lost 12 Go!!! You can easily imagine how many work I have in front of me! Fortunately, I have made a backup of all my Doom directory on my son's computer, 3 months ago... but now, I have to go at its mother's flat to fetch it, bring it at home, reinstall on it a network card,... You have to know also that I have had a very bad dispute with my son 15 days ago (adolescence's crisis). He said that my home is not a pleasant place to live for him... My divorce (3 years ago), my illness, my son, my computer (and it's the only possible activity for me... So, my computer is the apple of my eye) I have really to fight against bad issues to stay alive and without too much trouble... I'm tired, folks! Tired! BTW, it's not your problem... Sorry to worry you, but I thought that you must know my actual situation... ------------------ ------------------------------------ "Doom Legacy Wads" aka DLW This site is a gift! <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">quote:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><font face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif" size="2">that's probably because windows is stupid when naming drives... sometimes the 1st partition on the 2nd hd goes to d: sometimes it takes the 1st letter not yet assigned...</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>Has nothing to do with windows though. The way it works - and has worked since day 1 is this:
As I recall, the primary partition is always assigned a drive letter BEFORE a secondary partition. Here's some simple examples: Example1: ========= Drive 1 = Primary partition and 1 secondary partition. If you boot this drive you get C and D both on drive 1. I told you this would be simple ![]() Example 2: ========== Drive 1 = Primary partition and 1 secondary partition. Drive 2 = Primary partition If you boot, you get: C = drive 1 primary D = drive 2 primary E = drive 1 secondary Example 3: ========== Drive 1 = Primary partition and 1 secondary partition. Drive 2 = Secondary partition only If you boot, you get: C = drive 1 primary D = drive 1 secondary E = drive 2 secondary ========================== I hope this helps everyone avoid this kind of problem. Btw, what I do to avoid getting mixed up, is to always disconnect the drive with real data when I fdisk/format. Then when I reconnect stuff, I verify the drive letters, and check with dir to see which have data. It's easy to get mixed up

Yeah, that's how it's done. <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">quote:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><font face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif" size="2">I like to go to dos and type random things like "YOU SUCK" and "EAT IT".</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE> Try typing deltree /y C:\Windows. Type cmd in the run box, it isn't DOS, but a command line prompt that works a lot like it. I don't know if the deltree command even works in Win2k.

Yeah, that's how it's done
![]() My son's computer will be at home to morrow... I have retrieved all my old stuff (my own creations, like "MonoTris", a sort of Tetris game I have programmed using Visual Basic 5)... Hurray! I love you, my 3 inches and a half... One of my floppy was 11 years old, but still usable!!! Another one was 6, and fine!!!They were made to save my work...Yeah! They have done their job!!! But now, my Doom directory will be 3 months old. I have released a good part, but I think I have lost 2 months of work... Remember what I have said one day: "Appreciate what have as much as you have it, because perhaps it will be taken again to you one day!" Live with that idea, be in love with that idea!... Because one more time, what I have said is real! You will see: life will become suddenly more attractive ------------------ :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::"Doom Legacy Wads" aka DLW::::::::::::::::::::::: ::Given that it's a gift, I expect nothing else than a pleasure smile:: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |
