I got a p133 with a 12MB voodoo2. I've been playing jdoom good frame rates (35fps) when i load the md2s i get 5-10 fps!!! if i set use models to zero, i see that jdoom still loads them, but my framerates are back up again to 35. Of course, i'm just seeing the sprites on the screen. How can a boost the framerate with the MD2s??

May be your CPU, what kind of frame rates do you get with say GLQuake, or Quake II? I have never owned a 3Dfx product, so I am not much help there. Are you using the 3dfxOGL batch file? BTW, any Doom engine game has the frame rate capped at 35fps.

I've been getting 30 FPS in glquake using my old Voodoo1. My Voodoo2 does about 40fps. But i know it's using the 3dfxgl drivers for it. When i use the 3dfx batch file to start up it tosses up a choice to select primary display or Voodoo2 direct x . I always select direct x. I guess it isn't using the 3dfxgl drivers and is instead running it in direct 3d. How do i force it to use the gl drivers for the voodoo2 card? Quake 2 was playable as well. I just can't figure out why the MD2s slow my system down to a crawl.

Okay, lets start with the direct 3d problem. To get JDoom to use OpenGL as its renderer you need to use the command line option:
"doomsday -game jdoom.dll -gl drOpenGL.dll -doom -maxzone 16m" The -gl flag selects the openGL dll in the JDoom folder. (The other options force the game to find the JDoom dll and also give the MD2 models 16MB of texture memory). Another option is to try some new drivers. You can try installing either the WickedGL drivers from Wicked3D or you can try the latest Voodoo2 drivers from 3Dfx. If you are using Windows Millennium then you might want to try IceMans 3Dfx WinME driver pack. You can get all the above files at: http://www.voodoofiles.com/s/3dfxdrivers Finally, if you dont have much memory on your system, you should quit all applications before loading JDoom, then Windows won't be paging memory from your hard disk and slow down the game. Hope this helps, ------------------ Stimpee @ http://www.newdoom.com/stimpee |

I'll give it a try. I've got a 3dfx.bat file that specifies to use a direct3d driver. And another bat file called 3dfxOGL.bat with the following line:
doomsday -game jdoom.dll -paltex -maxzone 16m -plutonia i added the the stuff after the "-paltex" but this bat file doesn't seem to work. What is this -paltex option? I'll give your command line a try and let you know how it goes!! |
