Post EverQuest and Doom? Relevance?

http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/20...ide/index.html

I got PC Gamer's Feb 2001 issue yesterday (Yes, i know it's still December). There was a very interesting article about a girl named Sheyla on EQ, who commited suicide...but the story gets a whole lot deeper than that! Click the above link for a full-sized article on the matter. We NewDoomers may not be addicted to EverQuest, but one or two of us might be addicted to IRC or simply the general internet as if it were crack!

This is how it had been with me before I realized I -DID- have a problem. And I still feel stupid saying it that way but it's true. Pages of posts! Pitiful school grades! Lack of RL friends because all i did was chat in IRC and post in newdoom.com. But I took a step back. I avoided the internet for a day. And the next day, I didn't feel like spending 24 hours in front of my computer. I hope it's this easy for most people.

I'm saying all this because I'm concerned about some of you guys, too. Obviously people like Empyrial Revenant aren't posting here at least forty times a day. But some of you are, and it's time you work your way off of it. The article above will help you, if you are that person.

Thanx for listening. I'm actually flipping off my system after I post this! Something smells good downstairs...remember the term "meal?"

Gee, I'm an addict.

Am I likely to go and hang myself because someone beats me at a deathmatch? No.

Everyone is addicted to something. Be it beer, fags, drugs, goats pizzle, soap powder or oxygen. As long as they are happy doing what they are doing, and are not hurting themselves or other people, then it's cool by me.

If you felt that you were spending to much time online, then that too is OK.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the one thing I cannot stand is preachers. People who tell others what to do, and then say "Look at me, I am what you should all apsire to." That pisses me off. I have spent to much of my life with people like that.

Sorry. I wanted to get that off my chest.

Awww, gimme a break! An addiction to online interaction is not the path to suicide, depression or social retardation! Now, I realize that some people have no social lives outside of the online world, but what is so bad about that? It is like having no friends but a pen-pal. Sure, your kinda wierd becuase you have no friends but ones you have never seen, but that is your problem, not the internet's.

I know, I'll quit my job, tell all my friends to bugger off, split with my better half and see if I can't win the Newdoom.com forums posting race

Ha! Seriously though, that's essentially what it would take. I mean 2500+ posts is really an awful lot. By this time next year I'll be an imp. Maybe

*fart*

Oops, someone died....

wait a mintue, people die all the time.
Good for them.

*3 mintues later*

Okay, I actually read it, found out it was a hoax, but a good lesson blah blah blah...
Didn't stop me from posting this just now, did it?

Sorry, if I was in a better mood, I'd probably say all this in a nicer way, but people that commit suicide SHOULD, cause suicide's for QUITTERS, and they should DIE.
I'm sick of those stupid KID'S HELP PHONE bullsh1t thingys on like MUCHMUSIC (canadian MTV type jobby), and thier bullsh1t about saving those dumba$ses

This isn't about suicide though, it's about addiction, and addiction as Darknation said, is fine by my standards if they aren't hurting anyone. I can't say that I'm not addicted to NEWDOOM, because somedays, I've just not posted, and it didn't bother me, but the thing that conserns me is my fear of the regulars of today becoming the no shows of an hour later, (remember ZACK?). I'd like to see people stay here just so it seems like an old, and loved community.

My opionion changes daily though, so who knows what I'll say tomorrow.

I'm addicted to breathing..I...MUST..STOP!

Anyhoo, on a serious matter, addictions are bad, and SOMEONE thinks I'm addicted to these forums. Not true. I spend probably an hour TOTAL in here, and 30 minutes elsewhere. A couple hours at most.
Those who actually get fired from their jobs and lose their kids and home due to endless surfing are addicted. Zack and his slumping grades hurt him too, but he's got his monkey off his back.

As for me. If I don't have a 'net connection for a week or so (it happened when I moved, remember?), having no phone sucked ass, but I wasn't craving the Internet. I missed it, but I wasn't going nuts or anything, so no, I have no addiction. I'm just streamlined, hence the high post count.

Yikes Don! That's pretty cold. Having worked with kids and grown ups with severe problems and having worked through the same problems myself, that kind of hurts. People are different, they all have different feelings, tolerances, and opinions.

People who commit suicide aren't quitters, they are deeply hurt, very troubled people who didn't get the chance or the help they needed.

I hope very much that you reconsider what you said, because otherwise it shows you to be a very petty, very small-minded person.

Here's hoping you get killed in a car accident, Don.

Kind of different when it's you, isn't it?

I think people need to understand that depression is a clinical condition. Sometimes it's terminal.

Can't be, Wmull. I miss a day, no big deal. I lost a week, no big deal.

2 hours on weekends isn't addiction, my friend.

Actually, Stphrz, in reality, depression is a PHYSICAL ailment. I forget the chemical, but the brain creates a chemical to regulate mood. When that chemical isn't being made anymore, or too little of it is, the part of your brain that regulates mood stops working, or barely functions. Hence, the physical property.
What we see is mental, though. Since there's no mood regulation (or too little), those people wind up feeling way down in the dumps, and in most cases, sometimes feeling extremely well, like they can take on the world.
I know, because a few people I know have this condition, and have been to depression meetings to learn more.

Depression is caused by many different things, not just physical pre-disposition. It's actually very much a mental / psychological thing which manifests in physical ways. It's like how if you believe very strongly that you will get a stomach ache you will actually cause the symptoms of a stomach ache. Thought is a very powerful thing, and not to be taken lightly.

Actually, WMull if you look at the little time stamp jobbies on KR's posts, you see he makes 'em all (the vast majority anyway) all at near the same time. He posts like a dozen messages in about 20 minutes, then he's gone for pretty much the rest of the day. If he's like me he goes to work or something I don't think KR's an addict in the way you mean. Besides. He uses AOL :P He's gotta be used to a LOT of downtime when he can't get online

Actually, I'm in the VERY rare minority, but I have no busy signals and very few troubles connecting. NetPAYSOMETHING is my alternative if AOL does fail.

Second, I meant CLINICAL DEPRESSION is a PHYSICAL ailment. Sorry for being unclear. If an MRI is done on the brain of a clinical depression sufferer, it'll show a lack of mood regualting chemicals in the brain.

Finally, Stphrz proves my case that I'm streamlined in reading and writing posts here.

Your brain naturally produces 'happy stuff' from a gland when you get happy. There are little receptors that receive this 'happy stuff'. When you take drugs like pot, it mimics the role of 'happy stuff' and makes you, well, happy! But what happens is the pot's home made happy stuff molecules is not the right shape to fit into the brain's happy receptor, so over time your happy receptors are damaged. That is why taking drugs feel good at first, then you have to take more and more to archive the same level as if you never took drugs. Your happy receptors don't function as well. Depression is often related to this.

This might explain the lack of Sir Robin in the community as of late....

I was talking about natural failure in the brain, not drug induced.
WAY too much drinking also is a contributor.
