Zdoom!
I can't believe people aren't talking about one of the best ports out there! ZDoom and ZDoomGL are begging to be discussed! Come on, people!

I actually prefer ZDoom over any other source port because of its features and stability. Today I played KZDoom6 for ZDoom and I liked every moment of it with ZDoom. But that's my opinion.

Unfortunately ZDoom's weird random crashes have made it a lot less fun for me to use. For as long as I can remember, ZDoom randomly crashes inevitably with a little bug report window.

Yeah that happened to me a lot too, I had to make a separate directory to put ZDoom in. Then after that everything was fine.

Yeah same here. I had that problem too, but I have no idea how I fixed it. It was probably the seperation of ZDoom into a seperate directory (like Player_Of_Doom did) that fixed the problem. Anyways, it works great and runs smooth like a hot knife through butter (200FPS average). BTW I played KZDoom 6 too, and I gotta say, I loved every minute of it too. But the one thing that annoyed the hell out of me was the trees and bushes that you inevitably get stuck in without warning just because you were passing by. And one more thing: Felix, you might be experiencing Open-GL problem because you either installed something (some other port, perhaps) after ZDoomGL or your ZDoomGL has issues or you GFX card has issues (or a combination of all the above problems). Also, maybe it's the particular version of ZDoomGL you have that's at fault. Try a different version. And if you could, tell me what bugs or errors (if any) the engine reports.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of a launcher/frontend for Zdoom that has support for Heretic and Hexen?

Geedougg: Yeah I hated the trees and bushes too. When I got the RL and tryed to shoot at a Cacodemon, I'd blow up in front of the tree!
Atum Ra: I don't know really any launchers for Zdoom except the one here ZDoom Launcher 2.6a But there may be other launchers or frontends I haven't heard of. |

I really like Zdoom, and consider it absolutely essential to have since so much new content is released for it - but there is just some nagging discomfort I have with the way moving around feels in it. |

Well, there ARE other frontends/launchers (try KDX), but the ZDoom launcher is one of the best by far for ZDoom, although it's getting very long in the tooth. I'd wait for version 3.0+ of the launcher if you want Hexen support. Heretic support is there already, but since Hexen isn't fully supported yet (or wasn't back then) the launcher doesn't support Hexen @ version 2.6.
Player_Of_Doom: Yeah I learned my lesson from using the RL near the trees and bushes real fast, and I only used the Shotgun and Super-Shotgun or the Pistol and Chaingun (because they can shoot through) instead of projectile weapons. KZDoom could really use 3D models - of course then again we wouldn't be able to use'em with ZDoomGL 0.7 'cuz the newer version haven't reintroduced MD2 support yet. So I guess we're stuck with the strange trees and bushes for now! |
