It's possible, remember the Doom engine is Free Software so it's not a fixed feature programm anymore, and the Doomsday engine is already close to be a complete rewrite.

Well I would guess that a jDuke3d game library would have to support the CON files. As I understand it this not a crappy TC that tries to do Duke3D in vanilla DOS DOOM.EXE (which is impossible and illegal). It would have to be a full featured game library that would enable the original Duke3D data (I count the CONs to the data) to be played on the Doomsday engine, it would simply replace the Build engine with the Doomsday engine. Is all that work/time worth it? Seeing how well the Build-projects come along, I don't really know. Some Free Software purist might point out that the Build Engine license is incompatible with the GPL (Duke3D/Shadow Warrior's game code license) in the way it's compiled together, but I'm to pragmatic to get worked up about that.

It sounds like it would be great.

The current devs (Terminx has kinda stepped back a bit now and there are a few others such as Hunter-Rus et all.) are doing a good job on the customization side, but there is NO support whatsoever from anyone there on the coding side for lighting effects. I don't know if that is due to an old-school gaming ethic or what. All the users and modelers are gagging for a more advanced rendering engine.

If you want to check out what they have done, you can drop by the forums and drop Terminx or Hunter Rus a PM. EDuke32 is also open source, so you can check out the current state of play.

I'm surprised people are still posting here. It seems to me that Duke Nukem 3D now has a source port with visuals that are just as nice as Doomsday and is more stable. Back when this thread was started, such a thing did not exist. You can thank the very large dedicated Duke Nukem community for this. I wish some of those guys would come over to this community...

Thats the thing. EDuke32 is great, it just needs lighting effects and it is at least on the same level as Doomsday (not that I'm an expert on Doomsday...). The problem is that nobody who can do it (one of the core coders) is the least bit interested.

Strife surpasses Doom, Quake, Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem in many ways. For example it has a story. Multiple endings. "Non-linear" game play. Some form of stealth. Conversations with multiple choices.

Story in games is nice, but highly overrated. Sometimes it gets in the way of a fun game. I'm pretty sure Doom is better off for not having much of one.

deathspleasure: You downloaded the full version of a commercial game? You're going straight to Hell for that!

And as we all know, Hell is a fun place where you shoot zombies with plasma rifles.
