NewDoom Reviews #12 (May, 8th, 2006) -> Discussion and linking!.

Hi people!.

Better late than never but here we are again with a little batch of reviews and some changes... First, there will be only one thread per issue from now on so you can start discussing and talking nonsense right here and right now. Second, the whole summaries won´t be on the forums anymore, but on the site... I think that a better implementation of that could be done but it will have to wait for a while.

In the meantime, make sure you check the reviews HERE and leave your comments .

Well I've got a couple of lines of text in, but calling stuff like it a review would be unfair to the proper ones. Of course, now I'm almost at the same low quality of reviews as those I did before, but luckily I won´t ever review again LOL.

Ask Rusty about that... I´ve been waiting for those reviews for two weeks :P. Serious, the reviews you´re reading were ready a couple of weekends ago but real life usually makes you do other things before releasing them.

Damn that real life.

Meanwhile the news is finally up and we can all talk about the reviews. No, wait I have more news to do. Ciao!

I just sent the review people an e-mail as to why my review isn't done.

And yes, I noticed that there was a fine map missing from this weeks reviews. I should go finish detailing it then go upload it to the archive...

Danimetal, I can't describe how much I loathe you.
Don't worry, people. Next week I'll have two reviews hopefully in. You don't have to read the danimetal garbage any longer.

I think the new format takes some time to get used to, but will work out better in the end.

I´ll skip the typical post editing so you can read Fatal post contents as he intended them to be, for amusement´s sake.

General question to the reviewers

I do read and take the reviews seriously but, I make up my own mind up when I have played the wad.

My question:

When you review a wad, do you take into account how long the person, who made it, has been making maps?

I don't know if they do, but i don't think that a mapper's experience should be taken into account. A review is to tell how good the wad is, sugar-coating it for newbie mappers decreases the quality of the reviews. A review should be objective and based soley on how the level looks and plays, increasing scores for new mappers would be absurd.

Yeah, Pumpkinsmasher is right. Once I had a bit of comparation going with the five level pack, but it wasn't really visible.

We never really care about the author of the map, we just put it for show when we've written the actual review. At least that's what I do.

Fatal perfectly said that he doesn´t... Anyway, I personally do. If I know that a wad is one of the first efforts of some author I won´t be more friendly or anything when reviewing but will make sure that people know that it´s a wad from a new author (just as happens with 1994 wads, I tend to make their procedence noticeable) so people know what to expect.

Also, all wads are judged in their own terms so there won´t be comparing, flaming or "please, stop mapping already" stuff in our reviews. In fact, one thing that I like to do when I come with a wad from a new author is to write down things that would make (in my opinion) a better wad. This way authors can take (if they want to) some pieces of advice here and there.
