View Full Version : Mix Tape

Disclaimer: Before anyone bitches about copyrighted material, I already asked Doom_Dude (Who asked Phoebus), and they both agreed that it's OK to do this thread.
Here's the deal: You upload a zip with selected tracks from their music library. Only, you strip out the file details (artist, song, album, artwork, etc.), so there is no indication of what the songs actually are. We take turns posting our "mix tape" and everyone puts up their comments. You're welcome to guess the artist and/or song, but it's not necessary.
The Rules:
1. We take turns--it would turn into a huge mess if everyone posted their "mix tape" at the same time, and we'd have no idea whose is being commented about. I'll go first because I'm so handsome.
2. Your "mix tape" must not exceed an hour and twenty minutes long (80 minutes), or cannot exceed 100mb; whichever comes first.
3. If you want to upload your own, you have to participate in commenting. It would be unfair to ignore everyone else's and just post your own expecting to get a free ride.
4. To avoid bias, try not to read others' comments until after you've posted your own.
That should be about it. So without further ado, here's mine!

1. Good start. Sometimes the epicness gets cheesy, but I guess it’s better to be like that than without melody. Growling is an automatic minus, but even that doesn’t make me want to unhear this. ****
2. I don’t like the singing all that much. This is a more generic song otherwise, too. Not a terrible song, but it’s nothing very good either. ***
3. Some nice rhythmic stuff, but I don’t really get it. Seems like it could make pretty damn nice background music, though. ***
4. Why did he have to spit during the recording? :( This here is the first song of the pack I really don’t like. I guess it’s the repetitiveness and lack of melody that does it for me. **
5. There’s something I don’t like in female singing voice that I can’t really put my finger on. That applies to this song too and since I don’t find the other parts of the song very appealing either, I’d rather not listen to this again. **
6. Some good parts, but again I don’t like the singing, and the song didn’t seem to go anywhere. Still, it’s not horrible music. ***
7. Good riffing at times in this song! Again the singer is boring and lacks personal style, but the song itself is good enough to carry its weight. A pretty good tune! ***
8. Good guitar sounds and the melody is rockin’ too! I do like this very much! ***** (note that is actual five stars and not just a typo or something. Well done!)
9. If I may say so, this is a good basic song. There’s nothing particular wrong with it, but still that’s not enough to make it a top dog. It does get better towards the end, though. ***
10. This one is the opposite, as in it starts alright but gets worse and worse towards the end. Not a bad song, but I don’t like it. **
11. Good song. I like the melodies, and even the growling doesn’t bother me all that much. Truly quite listenable music. ****
12. wat *
I figure I could take the next turn.

1. Pretty good. It's like a stripped-down Wintersun (understandably). Enjoyable. Maybe I'll check out more of their work. ***.5
2. SHALLOWWWW! This is probably my favorite song from that particular album. Sick drumming, and fitting breakdowns, and awesome vocals. Too bad they haven't touched this level since. *****
3. Quite good. Electronic music done right. ****
4. This sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Hard-hitting shit, and I like it. It sounds quite a bit like the early Swedish melodic death metal bands like Eucharist and Cromlech, of whom I'm a big fan. ****
5. One of those bullshit "gothic/symphonic" metal bands, who use the hot frontwoman and the keyboards as a distraction from the drop-D ultraboring guitar chugs. It's good for what it is, and the vocal texture is good. ***
6. This song is fucking awesome. NEVERENDIIING!!! ******
7. lol cheesy euro power metal intro riff. Turns out to be a pretty great and epic song. Maybe even Fatal will like this?!?!?!? I should check out more of this band. ****
8. I should listen to the new album, because I forget how great this guy's songwriting is. ****
9. I dig the intro, the choral ending, and the vaguely Megadethian thrashy/melodic guitaring. Dynamic enough to stay interesting for nine minutes! ***.8
10. Hell yeah! Great album, and this is possibly the best track. *****
11. You have a knack for picking the best songs off of albums we both have. Well, maybe second to the last song. But only maybe. *****
12. Whoa. *****

@ Nomad (i'll keep with the star ratings)
01. about what I expected to hear from you. I like this song. *****
02. meh, its got its moments but the vocals annoy me. sounds like what some of my friends listen to.**
03. I like the moody intro. hm... its really good in an atmospheric way. its funky, but also seems clandestine. I enjoy this, but not something I would keep around in my library.****
04. RAWR ****
05. I used to enjoy this sort of stuff, sounds like a million other things now tho. still, the performers are talented. ***
06. a good example of why I can't get into prog metal. just when it seems the song is going to open up and unleash something, it falters, and climax never comes. to my ears anyway. **
07. see no. 2 **
08. makes me want to play megaman - therefore it is awesome. ****
09. catchy riff. vocals surprised me, they seem underpowered. song kinda droned by without keeping my attention for the most part. **
10. nothing nice to say *
11. oh when will Time be released!? *****
12. wtf is this? *
I'll take my turn after FATAL and Rusty.

you guys are too slow, so I'm just gonna post mine. I kinda forgot about the 100mb limit, but I'm only over by 6mb. there are some album art thumbnails embedded that I can't figure out how to remove, sorry about that (I think its just one track tho). anyway, enjoy.

No, the turn changes once Nomad tells us what the songs were, and that happens once Nomad thinks that he's gotten enough comments or until a specific time (week?) has passed.

I'm after Acyclitor. Tada! Didn't think I was really gonna get around to reviewing it, did you?
1. It's nothing new but it's well done and the intro is very nice. 7.9/10
2. Pretty decent, even if some of the parts don't blend perfectly. Solo is sort of so-so, but everything else is good. 7.5/10
3. I leik. The "funkyness" sort of ruins the atmosphere after the first minute, and the piano is dearly missed later on, but it's still good. 8.0/10
4. Nothing that screams at me, but there's nothing I really dislike about it either. The spitting sound was sort of neat. 8.6/10
5. Maybe it's just my dislike of female singers, but I don't like this song, the vocal style is like pop opera and it's just irritating. The guitar and drums are mediocre at worst, but forgettable at best, and the keyboard is really cheesy. 6.5/10
6. The piano is sort of tinny, but the melody itself is good. The chorus and solo are good, but everything after that is sort of strange. Not bad, but not that good, just sort of eh. Overall it would have been better if they'd gotten a real piano or at least not used the fake one so much. 7.0/10
7. Makes me think of the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack. The singer is annoying at times and the music is kind of generic, but nothing terrible. I have this wierd mental image of Fallout 3's Butch as the singer. :p 6.8/10
8. Solid Iron Maiden-esque instrumental that's good at what it does but is probably best used as background music, and not just because of the lack of vocals. Still, it's far from boring. 8.0/10
9. Hooray for real piano! Unfortunately the melody to the intro isn't as good as it is in 6. However, it really picks up after the intro. The singer is good, and the guitar is (for lack of a better word) satisfying, though not amazing. Normally I don't like insane double bass-drum pedaling, but it works ok in this song. The solo is pretty forgettable, but the drums really stand out in the bridge/breakdown section, easily overpowering the guitars. The clean bit is a blatant Iron Maiden ripoff, and I was glad to see the heaviness come back. I didn't care much for the outro. 7.9/10
10. The intro is boring, and the singing is as well, but I really like the guitars in this, the melody sort of grabs your attention. Drums are good too, but not great. The solo is great, there's some Peace Sells-esque whammy bar in there that only makes it more interesting. However, after that it sort of goes downhill until 4:58. 7.9/10
11. Melody's good, and the keyboard is nice and unintrusive. Vocals are alright, nothing bad but nothing special. The drums sort of get boring after a while, with the long pockets of double bass drum madness throughout the song. The outro is sort of nice in that the artists aren't afraid to let it go on a little while just because it's not that eventful. 7.0/10
12. I like this one, the piano is sort of surreal and the sampling/talking (whichever) at the end sort of provides a reason for the music's mood, even if I didn't hear half of what the guy was saying. 8.0/10

Looks like we need some horizon-expansion here, Gifty. That's sort of the point--to evaluate new music based solely on its own merits rather than comparison to music you already know you like. I find it unfortunate that you dismiss some truly imaginative music as mediocre and boring. OH WELL

Where did it say that? Last time I checked commenting meant giving your opinion. If I was supposed to view it from a different standpoint then it should have been said more clearly. I've been commenting this way since Nomad's first tape. If you want me to do it differently, I'll do it, just tell me first.
And I didn't dismiss any of it, I gave it a fair listen, I didn't go in thinking that if it didn't live up to Master of Puppets it sucks, I just didn't care for certain elements of it. I mean I only gave two songs in the whole tape under 7.0/10, so it's not like I hated it.

I think it's time to move on. Here's my songlist.
1.) "Into the Battle" by Ensiferum, off of Iron. - Iron is arguably their best album, possibly next to Victory Songs. This is one of my favorites of their songs altogether.
2.) "Shallow" by Into Eternity, off of Dead or Dreaming. - Into Eternity can sound a little emo-ish at some points, but they're still a really solid band. Definitely in my top 10 favorite bands.
3.) "Four Ton Mantis" by Amon Tobin, off of Supermodified. - Amon Tobin by far is my favorite electronic artist. He blends a ton of different electro genres, and fills them with tons of ambient goodness. This is one of his best songs.
4.) "Gutless" by Impaled, off of Death After Life. - Probably Impaled's best, most listenable song. They are a pretty decent death metal band; not too simple, but not wankery either, as well as a healthy dose of melody--but not too much!
5.) "Sancta Terra" by Epica, off of The Divine Conspiracy. - In my opinion, the best gothic/symphonic metal band, and this album is by far their best. This song is fun to play in Audiosurf.
6.) "Star Crossed" by Arcturus, off of The Sham Mirrors. - Not Arcturus's best song, but it was the song I felt like putting on there. These guys are one of very few truly innovative groups. It may not sound like it, but they have always had a unique sound that not many other bands can compare to.
7.) "Serenade" by Kamelot, off of The Black Halo. - This is possibly my favorite Kamelot song, next to the Elizabeth trilogy which make up eleven minutes otherwise it would have been the song I put in here.
8.) "Plunge into Hyperreality" by JT Bruce, off of The Dreamer's Paradox. - JT is an amazing songwriter, and amazingly talented and versatile musician. And the most amazing part, is that all of his music is completely free to download. Check out all his tracks at SubjectRuin.net (http://www.subjectruin.net)!
9.) "The Coming Curse" by Iced Earth, off of Something Wicked This Way Comes. - Iced Earth is one of the few bands I listen to that I can sit and listen to most of their stuff over and over and over and not get tired of it. This song is one that really gets me pumped up. This is also really fun to play in Audiosurf, despite its length.
10.) "The Space for This" by Cynic, off of Traced in Air. - Cynic is another of those truly unique bands. Probably the best song off this particular album. Their older stuff is a little more death-metal oriented, but either way they kick loads of ass.
11.) "Beautiful Death" by Wintersun, off of Wintersun. - Jari is fucking awesome. That is all.
12.) "Confessions" by Warmen, off of Beyond Abilities. - Warmen is the solo project of Children of Bodom's keyboardist Janne Wirman. I added this to bring it all to a mellow end. Not my favorite Warmen tune, but it's quite nice. The dialog is from the movie Amadeus.
