Looks like the European Union wants to ban the big screen plasma TV's, because they use too much power to operate:

Not to be outdone, the Looney Liberal Capital of the World wants to 1-up the EU:
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/fresh-greens/2009/01/06/california-may-ban-big-screen-tvs.html
Proves the extreme Librals are too stupid to let things like RESEARCH get in the way of doing what THEY want you to do. Plasma TV's even the larger ones, use a lot less energy than the CRT sets do, and even more so, the true power-sucking 3-CRT rear-projection models. DLP and LCD rears use more as well, although the LED-lit DLP's use less energy than their projector bulb counterparts.
So the LCD's use a lot less, and the new OLED's even less, but as a whole, the plasma sets don't really use all that much. The Liberals see a big screen, and ASSume (no typo) power-hungry. Not quite right.
So, what's your opinion, especially if you have a big screen TV?
I say, if I want it, and can afford to operate it, LET ME HAVE IT.

They'd only be banning the retailers. I doubt it would ever happen. In trying to please California's somewhat mental environmental lobby they're gonna piss off businesses. What's the power consumption like on a plasma TV anyway? Does it beat my bro's computer or my 30-year-old fridge?
Ahh, first article mentions the stats. Those things really do eat a lot of power. Meh. That'll just mean a more efficient TV happens. If I were in America and wanted to crack down on power usage though, I'd go after air conditioners. Those are what always fry the grid every year.

Indeed they should be banned for the greater good. It's not like there's a surplus of useless energy on this planet.

First they tell us to save money by using less electricity/gas then they allow the power companies to bump up their prices so any savings we make are more than wiped out by the incresead prices.
If governments were really concerned about the environment they would take over the the power companies and have full control over supply then if they have to they could ration it out in a fair way.
The way I see it whenever a government starts saying they are thinking of banning something like plasma tv, mobile phones etc they are actually telling the folk who manufacture them that they want a bigger bribe.

Plasma TV's do eat up a somewhat ridiculous amount of power though, and its not a huge loss if they were banned. Big screen LCD TV's are on par with Plasma's in terms of image quality, without the somewhat ridiculous power usage. Though even big screen LCD's can use a fair bit of power to run. There is no denying though once you have a big screen HDTV you never look back at the old bulky SDTV things.
Not that it really matters. A more energy efficient big screen TV would be a better solution to simply banning things.

Banning plasma TVs would make sure that there is actual motivation for the development of such a thing. If the goal is the same, why not jump start the project?
Most big screens are useless and used for advertising anyway. It wouldn't be much of a loss.

They wanna save power they should ban those giant, glowing billboard TVs. Fuck, I hate those. They should also ban those ultra-bright headlights in cars, and super-loud car stereos. Fuckers with their damn hip-hop!

The thing about that that always bugs me is it's ALWAYS hip-hop. Why?
Anyway, if they're going to ban some things that use rediculous amounts of power, I'd say go ahead, as long as they're not touching my computer.

I have a 40" rear-pj LCD, and it uses only 14 watts more than the 27" CRT I had. Still, if I can use my 26" bedroom LCD, I use it, more so, the 15" for that morning rush, so I don't power the power hog, andsuck the life out of a $280 bulb.
A more energy efficient big screen TV would be a better solution to simply banning things.
That'll be what will happen. Then again, with the response time down to a mere 2ms, and a refresh rate of 119.88FPS, who needs those dim, burnable plasmas? LCD's are getting good, especially now that they are color-corrected (some still aren't, though).

Then we're taking your computer and sending your electricity to Africa. Fuck you, comrade.

Actually, someone at work told me the OLED TV's will be in bigger flavors come 2010, so that will make the Enviro-Terrorists happy.

Aliotroph? is right, true ecoterrorists are never satisfied. I hope you're just intentionally being silly (rather than continuing to act as a total idiot) and are aware that not all activists are terrorists.

methinks Liam is often pretending to be silly for the sake of argument, as are a few others on these boards, makes for less boring threads when you think about it.

Uhh.....yeah, you're right. They'll blow up those TV's as well, because they'll use more power than smaller OLED's do. :)
