View Full Version : Which operating system do you use most?

As a gamer, you are generally a technical person. What operating system do you use most?
I'm not talking about strictly for gaming. What OS do you use for productivity? Creativity? Horsing around?
Also note that I am running this poll on a few different sites, so if you frequent those sites, please only vote once, as I will be compiling the numbers at the end of the run.

Ubuntu 8.10 for my daily use (writing, internetting, internets, some games) and Windows XP just for gaming, so I voted Linux.

I haven't really ventured outside of Windows XP yet, so just that.

Been a while since I was bothered about using anything other than XP.

As such my PC still gets used mostly for gaming and web browsing, and Vista does everything I do on my computer fine without any problems, so I don't think I'll be looking at a Linux install until gaming eventually wears off.
And I will never be using OSX on a desktop-based PC. Ever. I really think Apple should just start sticking to their Macbook range and high end graphics development boxes.

I have two machines, one for gaming and one for everything else and I use XP on both.

Windblows XP sp3 for the most part.
I'v sort of been pick'n choosing with linux, settled on Ubuntu.
But I mainly use Winxp so I voted on that.
Games on the PC wearing off, I could never see that happening.

Entirely Linux. And I mean *real* linux, not that windows wannabe that calls itself Umbuntu. Specifically:
Slackware Linux on:
3 Laptops
4 x86 desktops
Sun Micro Sparcstaiton
Other Linux on:
HPPA Risc Machine (Debian, I believe)
DEC ALPHA Machine (Debian)
Sharp Zaurus (pdaxrom)
GP2X (You know, the one that comes with it... Embedix? Actually you probably don't know what I'm talking about, but someday you might.)
Linux will soon be appearing on :
Dreamcast
PS2
Wiij
Windows lives on some of my systems, but is never used (a relic of a bygone era, by which I mean my parents had it -- I guess that makes it a hereditary disease in this case). Say, why are there no BSD or HURD or Next users out there? Not even i5OS. I guess "Other" just sounds sad or something.

Windows for me at the moment, Linux seems interesting but I have no use for it right now.
Aliotroph?
December 3rd, 2008, 09:46 PM
WTF? DEC Alpha? Where do you get this stuff? lol Last I checked HURD was crap and NeXT was dead. I haven't seen a NeXT machine in 15 years. I used to have all my Linux desktops using that Window Maker window manager. It does a nice job of acting like NeXT.

Ubuntu isn't that bad is it? It's Debian or based on Debian afaik heh
The latest version seems pretty good and I did check a lot of the newer Linux destros out before deciding on Ubuntu.
But again I mainly use windowsxp.
Oh btw, I almost decided on OpenSUSE but then I noticed it started to get a little buggy. maybe the next version will change my mind.

Ubuntu isn't bad, but take away all the Linux features you'd come to expect and its not really a whole lot different from a Windows OS. For some it ruins the whole point of moving away from Windows in the first place.

Yeah, Ubuntu is meant for the Windows crowd. No doubt about that. But really, can you blame the developers for giving a good non Microsoft, Open Source alternative to Windows? I say that it's a good thing. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouse.
...xD WHY?!
Posting on my desktop which uses XP. I hate this thing though. It's about 5 years old and a peice of garbage. I miss my laptop (HD died) :C. Luckily, I'll have new HD tommorow :D:D:D. My lappy uses Vista btw and that's primarily what I use. Vista ftfw!

What? Wrong times ten. The reasons I use Linux (and I use and have used "real" Linux, including Slackware, Red Hat, and the like--I used to do all my computing in runlevel 3, so don't try to out-1337 me) are the community, the security, customizability, and the absolute freedom, and Ubuntu supplies every one of those.
Take away everything you expect from Linux, and yes, obviously it would not be like Linux. pls do research or we

Red Hat is the only Linux Distro (aside from a little bit of poking around in a knopix live boot disc) that I'ved really used. I did, however, ditch it as, at the time, I was running on dialup and my modem was not supported. LAME! I do, however, plan on loading linux onto this bad boy (I mean bad literally :P).

How is it you could ruin the point of something like Ubuntu, exactly? Because you take away the fancy console? LOL Sad.
DOS 1.62? Even my first PC long before the Windows days had DOS 2.0 and DOS 3.3. :p
Wanna know a wicked reason not to run Windows on your main box? My bro just got a virus even I couldn't solve. Damn rusty at it since the Dell days. That and the viruses got smarter. It saw me poking around in Process Explorer and stopped letting me run the thing. hehehe

Because that was the absolute fucking worst Linux experience I've ever had. I still feel like I need to punch some devs in the throat for that clusterfuck.

Ubuntu really hasn't changed that much in the versions since then. That was only, like, a year ago! I told you it was likely hardware issues, but you were all "NO I HAD <INSERT X-LINUX DISTRO HERE> AND IT RAN JUST FINE"

some years ago I installed a version of linux on a partition and it promptly overwrote the MBR of my hard disk, destroying a couple of years work including a nice bunch of Doom and duke 3d maps that will never see the light of day.
I take things like that as a sign from the gods that Im not to use linux so I wont.

Never mind that overwriting your MBR doesn't even destroy your files and they can be recovered with some effort. :p
