Post awesome wads, where to find them, how many maps there are, and what port to use.
I'll start with my absolute favorites.
Wasted (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14198). Single map, for use in a Boom-compatible port with OpenGL. My first real map, and I made this over a year ago, so it's not very good, but it's somewhat fun.
Gigantic Bathroom. (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14474)One map, also by me. I made this for Legacy, but it also works in GZDoom.
The Darkening (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=9907). Eleven maps, and I believe it's for vanilla Doom 2 or a limit-removing port. This wad is badass.
The Darkening 2 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=10782). Twelve more maps, as a sequel to the previous Darkening.
NDCP! (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14102). Thirty-two levels of greatness, for (I think) limit-removing ports.
Decadence (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13062). This is the most staggeringly huge single level I've ever experienced, and it's BEAUTIFUL.
Post more.

(I'm not including cutscene-only maps in the level count)
Phobia - The Age (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14248) - Seven beautiful maps that push Legacy to its limits.
Hi-Tech Hell 2 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13603) - Six maps set in a techno-base. The amount of FraggleScripting is insane. (Legacy)
RTC-3057 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12747) - Seriously, these seven maps are on-par with any modern FPS. (Well I think they are.) Needs ZDoom.
Helm's Deep (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11891) - A single map, based on the Helms Deep battle from the Two Towers. (Beware, some parts will probably make your computer slow to a crawl. But it's still a great map.) Needs ZDoom.
Newmaps - Beta 10.5 (http://xbolt.knowledgehouse.info/newmaps.html) - 24 maps with another 12 hopefully coming in this lifetime. These are the most awesome maps ever made. They're the Mona Lisa of wads! :D (Legacy)

Simplicity (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13913) - 21 levels of visual goodness and tons of traps. This is freaking awesome. If only the final boss wasn't that hard :P

Nice thread. It's about time somebody made one like this.
I was gonna say Darkening 2.... I love that wad. I figure there's no point in repeating what others have already pointed out. I would suggest that we try to come up with pwads that nobody has mentioned yet. ;)
Community Chest (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12021) 32 levels. Like the NDCP it's an interesting mixture of community made maps.
High/Low 1 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14523) Fun E1M1 level.
Under Neith (http://doomworld.com/idgames/?id=13185) One map with nice details and lots of killin stuff.
Decade (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12849) One map. ZDoom Mayhem!
Shock Em Down (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11203) One map. Theres a lot of fighting in here. E1 style for Ultimate Doom.
Songs Of The Damned (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14710) One big map for Doom 2. Has a nice mix of outside and interior areas.
...gotta go for now. That's not a full list and just a few off the top of my head. Will post a few more later. :)

Well we'v got to have some Deathmatch in the mix! ;)
There's way to many good ones, but here's some off the top of my head.

In one of the wads lump's "Pistol" needs to be changed to "pistol" to work in newer versions of G/Zdoom.
Apparently Zdoom's syntax wasn't as strict back when RTC was released so it would ignore this.

@Vermil, Sorry, I didn't look into, just posted the version it was made under stated in the readme.txt. ;)
Sounds like RTC needs an update now. But as-is, do what the readme.txt says : RTC-3057 Requires ZDOOM 2.0 Beta 63.
The "or higher" part is something the map authors will have to work out, (not anyone else). so use the older zdoom version Bullet-time..

Yes, this is kind of a cool thread. I don't know how many "best of the best" lists I've seen, but they are almost always the same top 10 (Thus - best of the best I guess) and I've played them already.
Doomworld has that top 100 of all time (or something) and 90% is absolute garbage. Being a major Doom forum, those guys sure abuse the power, and usually fill every spot with some wad made by a friend, or someone else in their little "in" community of demigods and buttkissers.
With the mighty power of the internet, NewDoom should start a great poll and have everyone submit a "10 best" entry, compile the results and get a real picture of what people actually enjoy playing the most - which would be a good indicator of what the best maps really are. It should be confidential or we might have that peer pressure start slipping in. You know? No one wants to say "Hell Revealed" was actually a pretty crappy mapset by todays standards, and have everybody see what you typed. (God knows I won't!)
So far, I've only seen Darkening 1 & 2 that I've played, so I'm finding some good stuff to check out, and please keep it going. :)

What was that, Fatal? Dani has been my friend as long as I can recall also... Good idea? A bit "Fatalist" maybe?
I tried to get involved with your reviews - thinking myself a fairly unbiased player and judge of decent maps to play. No idea why you and Dani never let me help. Still not a bit bitter about that though

Since the RTC-3057 thread was closed before I got a chance to ask, I was playing it the other day and appear to be stuck. I can't figure out how to progress from where I am; There are a bunch of cells in a room, and two other doors outside it that I can't open (one says I don't have clearance, and the other one says that one or more of the cell doors are open). I can't close the cell doors because it says there is low pressure, but I have no idea how to overcome that problem. Anyone have any hints?
Otherwise, it seems to be a pretty cool wad. Quite a departure from the usual run-n-gun Doom stuff!

December 17th, 2007, 04:02 PM
@Nomad, if I remember right and if it's the same place heh, there should be 2 maybe 3 targets on the walls around the door? to shoot and the pressure lock door will open.
Nomad
December 17th, 2007, 06:21 PM
I believe that's a different one. There's a pressure lock on a door with two pipes just in front of it on either side of the doorway, which you shoot and then go back down the hall to lower the pressure on the little consoles.
I'm just a bit beyond that in some other puzzle, and I've tried shooting everything and tried activating everything, and I just can't figure it out. >.>

December 17th, 2007, 06:47 PM
Ah. You have to go into the room with the stairs down into the lower hallway and the sloped indentation nonsense doohickeys at the sides. I think on the right side, in the back corner, there's a little branch off into a pretty inconspicuous area with an unmarked, generic switch, which raises the pressure.
Not one of the better RTC puzzles, of course. Get used to it, by the way, as there are a few points where a switch hunt is involved. Luckily they are rarely as obscure and pointless as that one, but...
I'd add some PWADs to the list here, but since a few of my top picks are already in here and I'm too tired to come up with more, I'll probably do it later instead. Nyah. :p

Thanks, Ace. That was kind of stupid. The rest of the wad so far is really impressive. The craftsmanship is amazing, but it seems I'm stuck again. Seems like I've been everywhere and the only places I can go now are areas that I need yellow or red passkeys. Boo. :P

Deus Vult, impossible to beat.
el oh el. I did. *alien*
But....I won't lie. It took me like, hours, haha. And it wasn't the map divided in levels, no...map 5, the whole FREAKING beast in its entirety. Got time to kill? Like...lots of it? Hook yourself up with that wad imo. haha. Very nice architecture too. Lots of eye candy, especially if you like the Hellish theme.
Off the top of my head (don't have links atm, sorry =/)
Sirens. 11 maps for this TC. LOTS and I mean LOTS of eye candy, haha.
Alien Vendetta. 32 maps that scream out quality. Yes, even map 24. lol.
Demon Eclipse. Still a wip for the most part, but the maps, new monsters and new weapons are definitely the best I've seen possibly ever. For GZDoom, though.
Requiem. HOW COULD THIS NOT BE MENTIONED!? :(
Memento Mori II. Read above statement.
lol, I like megawads. >_> <_<

Man how has no one mentioned Strain. A total conversion of pure awesomeness... I just hate the plasma gun replacement because it fires to the side for some reason. Maybe it only happens in Doom Legacy though because I'm replaying it with Zdoom now and haven't gotten it yet...
Also Icarus provided me with hours of fun.
Another fairly interesting one is Dimensions of Time. The quality of some of the levels wasn't too great but the levels were very interesting somehow. I especially loved the midi versions of popular songs like Wrong Way by Sublime on some levels.
Oh and Invasion. It was chalk full of small errors that kept making Doom Legacy crash and I had to go in with Wadauthor and repair them myself. Nontheless it was another TC that provided me with a lot of fun on rainy days. This one requires Ultimate Doom while all the ones above required Doom 2.
I'm sure all the ones above can be found on the idgames archive.
Here are some Zdoom maps I think are worth mentioning. I just played an awesome set of levels called Demons of Problematique this week and it inspired me to get back into map making so I can create some truly awesome hell levels.
Also a fun one was Doom Raider, kinda Tomb Raider for Zdoom, very cool stuff...
Oh and how has no one mentioned Void by Cyb? Just amazing... I hear a second one was in the making but he got a life or whatever, I don't see how you can't balance doom mapping and a life though...
There was another one i forge the name. I think it was a precursor to void and it worked on Vanilla Doom I'm sure. Some very crazy battles....

Void! And Strain!
Crap crap crap. I completely forgot. *angry* lol. I've played so many wads most of the time I don't even know what the hell I've played until I start on the first map and be like 'ohai. I been hear befoar.' Um, let's see. Death Tormention was pretty good, too. One of the few Ultimate Doom wads that came out, and a really good one at that if I may say so. Scythe, Scythe 2 are amazing....though probably too difficult for the average Doomer. Brotherhood Of Ruin was another great map set; Aztec/Maya indian theme architecture...very very immersive imo. Kama Sutra was pretty fun too....kinda like Hell Revealed too, which I don't think has been mentioned either. (Too lazy to look up again, lol.) If I remember any more I'll post here again. *evilol*

Awesome PWADs eh? I can think of a few I view as awesome...
Scythe - A 32 map Megawad broken up into 3 episodes every 10 levels. First 10 levels are easy, second 10 are moderately hard, and the last 10 are REALLY hard and fast paced (some are really short aswell). Good level design and great gameplay is what the Scythe brings in. No custom textures used used
Scythe II - 28 map Megawad broken up into 6 episodes. All eps are 5 levels long with the exception of episode 6. The episodes get progressively harder much faster than the first Scythe wad. It should be mentioned that the last 20 levels are harder than the last 10 from the first Scythe! The level design is REALLY REALLY good and the game play pretty much matches it. Has 2 custom monsters with some custom textures.
Hell Reveiled - THE First Ultra-hard megawad. Level design is kinda bland, but the challenges posed are relatively fun and very hard. It has a full 32 maps. Not much else to say other than multiplayer is even harder given the fact t here are cyberdemons.
Hell Reveiled II - The original Author(s) of HR did not make this one, yet it still follows in its predecessor's foot steps of being an Ultra Hard mega wad. Level design is better than the first, but the levels are not quite as hard. Overall its about as good as the first; that is to say its a great set of levels for those looking to be pushed to the edge
The Brotherhood of Ruin - Incredible level designs here with really cool custom textures. These levels are also pretty hard... These levels are really the closest thing I have seen to a work of art in doom since I first saw "Earth".
Icarus - A old Team TNT megawad . The levels are not THAT amazing, but the gameplay is pretty fun and consistent making it a good chill-out wad that features a full 32 maps! If you want a easy going wad, where you can just hang out and try to get ideas for your map(s), this is probably a good one to start with!
Anti Christ - A Doom Wad that takes some original doom levels and puts a REALLY crazy hellish twist on them. Level design is roughly 1/2 based original doom levels and 1/2 completely original. I think the wad was never completed, but wahts theres is really fun. The levels are on the "Ultra-Hard" level if played on UV. the color themes are almost always red, grey, black, brown. If you are not of fan of any of those colors for what ever reason.... Stay away! Otherwise come and try it out! There are roughly 15 full levels here. The ones after that are obviously incomplete!
Crimson Canyon - A Dozen strange canyon maps done by a grade schooler. Don't let that put you off though, the map design is fairly good and the game play is mostly fun with a few quirky moments. The difficulty leaves much to be desired. As you can probably imagine, red is a heavy theme!
Blood Pak - A "funky" 32 map Wad I found by accident. There are alot of sound replacements here which can put alot of people off, but the over all level design is pretty decent. If you can get around the odd parts in this wad, you will probably enjoy it. If you do not like quirky strange things happening, I suggest you steer clear of it. The difficulty like the wad above, leaves much to be desired.
Earth - An older wad that attempts to take wonders of the world (Real Life) and put them into Doom format over the course of 10 maps. These maps are really a work of art for their time. Sadly nowadays there is nothing TOO spectacular about them, but alot of the maps have a strange feel and design to them that you rarely see in doom wads. That being said; its defiantly worth a look into.
After Life - A single map wad that's like a cemetery that you attempt to escape from. It seems to have blood references as you start in a grave! The difficulty isn't too bad and will disappoint those who expected to be pushed hard. The design is pretty unique and cryptic. A great single for anyone looking for a quick 1/2 hour of fun.
Archvile's Temple - As the name suggests, this single is chalked full of the fire eaters! This map is a very well done ultra hard wad with exceptional level design to boot. It's also a good way to conquer a fear of archviles if you still have it! ^_-
Titan - One of the rare wads that uses ZDoom's scripting and features! This wad has 9 levels that take you from a techy base to another world of total hell! The design is very well done and the difficulty is good but may seem abit easy to more experienced FPS players. The scripting used is well done and truly takes doom to the next generation in my opinion.
Nightmares of Loki 1999 - Okay, this probably doesn't belong here, but for any screwballs out there who like maps that have lots of little secrets and hidden switches which you NEED to find to get through the map, this wad is for you! As the name suggests this is truly a nightmare for even a god of trickery! This wad is for DOOM 1 and features a full 3 episodes and a semi complete 4th if you have Ultimate doom.

Tried this today. I didn't think it was that big. Not compared to many of the maps I've played (particularly in Final Doom, as well as Requiem). Interesting enough, but nothing special. Anyone who mentions that godawful wow.wad should be shot on the spot.
One megawad that I found rather stupidly fun while intoxicated was the NEWDOOM (1337.wad) made by Eric something, it can be found on /idgames. It was made to replace the 'OLDDOOM'. The txt. file was pure irony, hilarious at that. Much better than the thissux.wad which tried to be funny but gave me headache and was extremely boring.
Hell Revealed is a favorite of mine, although I don't like the sequel much, the level design was way too repetitive with those bars everywhere, and it just bored me.

Phobos (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=9597) One of the best wads I've played that can be played on doom2.exe . It is of course 10 years old now, but still some interesting techniques used. Worth a run through.
Earth (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=9627) This was made by the same author that made the above wad. Also includes many great effects that would now only be done using advanced engine features, but he managed to find ways to do it on the older engines.
Void (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12227) Been mentioned before, but a fun wad.

Okay, so I figure since I just spent an hour and a half compiling a long list of (probably only half of) the best WADs ever that I can remember for a friend of mine who's getting into Doom, I might as well share that list here.
I didn't link any of them, but IIRC all of these (or at least a very vast majority) can be found on the /idgames (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/) archive. If not, Google is your friend.

-Equinox
-Raven

Wasteland Series (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12664) by Alberto Barsella. A set of three maps, originally released separately, but merged together here. The First two are great maps, the third is still fun, but I don't think it was ever completely finished. They are very old maps made for Doom 1, but are really fun to play. If It's for ZDoom, then I actually can't play them with any wad, Only wads that will run on ZDoom.

Hellcore 2.0 because, really, everybody loves their own work. That and since I and a couple buddies that play Doom play with -fast and need a real challenge, I had to make my own wad to enjoy it to the most ridiculous degree :D
Asylum of the Wretched is probably my most favorite wad, it's quiet, it's creepy, and asides from 2 trap points in the game that can make co-op impossible, it's great to play with anyone that's bored with the point shoot and yawn approach that most maps have.
Invaders 2 (Invade2.wad) The music is pumping, the level is HUGE, the effects (for it's time) are incredible, and the gameplay is amazing. It is also another great co-op wad, however, give yourself a couple hours to beat it.
Action Doom is probably the most original gameplay modification I've ever had the pleasure of playing. It's tough as tits and the fact that it looks and feels just like the oldschool game complete with crazy bosses makes for a unique dooming experience.

Two single maps to add to your collections:
IC2004 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13039) and IC2005 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14025). Just played these both today and they are absolutely incredible.
I'd recommend playing '04 one first sheerly because IC2005 could technically be seen as a direct continuation of the first, but if you have to pick one, go with the latter. Both are amazing and very fun to play, but the sequel is definitely the best of the two. If you love playing maps that make you scratch your head and go, "How did they do that," then these are for you (particularly the second).

NeoDoom. Just finished playing it-up 'til my computer crashed. Using it with Doomsday
'cuz it looks purty. I especially like the quad fire shotgun and the new BFG 9000. Some of the monsters have been replaced too-there's a plasma firing android, a rocket guy, and the Winged Baron of Hell is in there (yeah, the one that was such a pain to kill-he's back)
and the detail? Amazing. We get wallpaper on the walls, good level design, buildings that look like buildings (and not just the generic ones you get in some wads)
very good level design, but hard as heck in some places

I haven't played too many good ones but I did enjoy Wolfendoom since I never had Wolf3D. I don't remember where it is but if someone could find a link and post it thanks. I personally loved Operation Arctic Wolf one of my favorites.
Never mind I found the link Wolfendoom (http://www.doomwadstation.com/main/wolfendoom.zip)
It contains all the Wolfendoom Episodes. I originally used Doom Legacy to play them (some you have to load several different files).
Warning it is about 33 MB

I love a lot of the wads already mentioned, I would add Gothicdm for deathmatching, its one of the best crafted megawads out there.
One of my own personal favourites and to date my best released work is Isis
http://www.mysticsrealm.co.uk/3ddoom/isis.zip
Theres no fancy scripts, rpg stuff or anything like that and if you hate maps so large you can get lost dont bother with it.

Doomworld has that top 100 of all time (or something) and 90% is absolute garbage. Being a major Doom forum, those guys sure abuse the power, and usually fill every spot with some wad made by a friend, or someone else in their little "in" community of demigods and buttkissers. Both of my sites (DLW and GZW) are offering a counter displaying how many times the pwads were downloaded.
You have only to look at the ones being the most downloaded, and you'll have your top 100...:D

A download count tells nothing of the quality of the wad. Only how well it has been advertised.

Even if your favourite wad is also the most downloaded one, it doesn't mean that it's the best or even good.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned here:
Eternal Doom
Requiem
Alien Vendetta
Hell Revealed 1/2
Memento Mori 1/2
Icarus
I'd also add to the list Super Sonic Doom. It's a 35 map zdoom partial conversion that, like it's name hints, is a sonic themed map with doom monsters, and many variations of them as well. Well worth the play, and my personal favorite level is map 13.

Forgive me, but my ancient Toshiba 2775xDVD laptop from 1999 is being incredibly uncooporative right now, so I am stuck writing in notepad and copying to my browser. So no linking or other pretty things at the moment.
Well, I am new to the forums here or anywhere, though Doom has been my gaming baby since 1994. Here is my list, all found in the archives at www.doomworld.com/idgames and run under ZDoom.
Coop favorites of all time (some of these we've found coop glitches with, but still love the maps):
Eternal Doom III
Requiem
Memento Mori 1 & 2
Community Chest 1-3
NCDP
Herian 1 & 2
Icarus: Alien Vanguard
Invasion 2
Cleimos 2.0
ZDoom Community Map
Dystopia 3
PIR (crashed ZDoom, but plays well in vanilla Doom on my ancient machine)
WolfenDoom: Operation Arctic Wolf
Alien TC
Maps that either don't support coop or my buddy and I haven't tried yet:
Barracks
Daedalus (sequel to Icarus: Alien Vanguard)
Gravity (the gameplay is kinda crappy in points, but it's soooooo pretty. Some areas have a Serious Sam vastness to them)
Realm of Chaos
Hell Revealed
Darkening 1 & 2
Knee Deep in ZDoom
Foreverhood 1.1
Deathmatch was never really my thing, but I've played through the GothicDM wads, TeamTNT's deathmatch wads, and some of the old DWANGO stuff.
And odd little maps that most people would probably scratch their heads at when they open them:
Mike's Deathmatch Castle 1 (mikedmc1.wad) (it's old, it's very basic, but for some reason I love it)
Houses 1.4 (the legions of hell take to the suburbs!)
I've played and loved (or detested) hundreds of other wads over the years, but these are the ones that have all stuck out in my head and drawn me back repeatedly to them. Unfortunately, most of the single level wads that I've played didn't keep me engrossed for enough hours or days to get their names committed to memory. My apologies to their authors, as many of them were outstanding.
Okay, I've also gotta admit that for years I also always loaded one of those pwads of midis that ripped off the Billboard Top 100 of the late 90's since they had all the music I listened to in high school.
So there is the two-cents-worth from the new guy to the forums!
I just acquired ZPack and Deus Vult II, so I'm off to pillage those like a rabid badger on speed.

One of my favourite Doom 2 WADs is the Simpsons Doom. It a full 32 level conversion and alot of fun. It changes characters from the original game with characters from the Simpsons.

Ultimate NMD: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=15645
Knee Deep in Phobos: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=15644
And maybe NDCP 2 (haven't gotten enough feedback yet)

Action Doom 2: Urban Brawl (http://action.mancubus.net/).
Holy crap, why wasn't I informed of this earlier? This is the most interestingly designed wad I've ever seen. I love the art style, and although the cutscenes are probably too numerous, it is still pretty fun to play. I haven't gotten far yet, but I wanted to say something about it now while I am thinking about it before I forget!
[edit]I just finished it, and I have to say that it deserves a lot more publicity than it has gotten! I mean, it is nothing horribly, horribly innovative or anything, but it is a very entertaining experience. The amount of craftsmanship in this is astounding. The Action Doom team get three thumbs up.

I have to agree this one is effing amazing. Must have taken years to make. It made a big noise when it came out over on doomworld but went almost unnoticed elsewhere for some reason.

Probably because people from Doomworld made it. Either way the mod deserves a lot more attention. Its a lot of fun and very well made.

I think it's just because so many mediocre wads get praised like they're the greatest thing ever. I think usually this happens just because they were made by some certain person. The problem with this is that the truly great and unique maps/mods such as Action Doom 2 don't get the extra attention they would deserve.

One of my favorite albums ever. Huge wake up call to me in terms of drumming and song structure.
I love the groove in this album. Songs like User-Maat-Re, AOTW, and Lashed are so awesome. Heavy with speed=the shit.

WADs I always loved:
- Plutonia Experiment: The original TNT IWAD and the my first Doom experience.
- Phobos: Anomaly Reborn. Truly epic one. Best plays on (Pr)Boom: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=11822
- Scimitar: I loved it since the first level. Well made, semi-old-school maps: http://www.cyclomedia.co.uk/doom/scimitar.asp
- Garrulo: an old school megawad from a friend. Not for being from my friend, just the maps are quite good, funny and classic looking: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12395
- IUPARTx: Yes, the Cooperative maps from "i-don't-remember-who". I enjoyed that set of maps like a kind with a sweet. (No link provided. Don't know where to take it, since I got it from zDaemon repositories time ago).
