Couple of updates for Urban Prison:
1.) I'll be posting a demo for my map in a month or two and I need a few testers that could help me out.
2.) There will also be a couple new things added to the map which includes:
A.) radio transmissions
B.) talking computer aid
C.) Introduction movie
(these 3 features might be in the demo version)
If anyone wants to help, please feel free to post!
If you do volunteer to test, you will need:
A.) Hi-Res flats and textures [you can find these at the doomsday hq site]
B.) JDRP pack (optional) [but looks alot better with it]
Thanks!

So I guess no one wants to help test it?

I think your right, everyone just wants to check out the finished project.
I find it hard to do any public demo or test for anything because part of the time some readers blindedly expect a non-finished project to be perfect. lol
And to keep away from that, most here would rather wait, if there isn't an auto-download for UP. ;)

I just can't seem to understand that. If someone needs to get something done and they ask for help before the map is done, why wait to see wait it looks like when it is finished and not beta tested first. The only time I would want a player to critisize my work is during the beta testing and not on the final version.
On one aspect, I can see how people aren't to excited to play my maps. Look at my old work, it looked horrible!!
This is my first map that I have actually put ALOT of work into. People saw my screenshots and gave me compliments. Some even said that they can't wait to play it. So, how come the ones that wanted to play it, haven't responded yet?
I'm just really confused?!?
And to keep away from that, most here would rather wait, if there isn't an auto-download for UP.
Then people need to at least let me know if they are going to wait, instead of leaving me high and dry and letting this post just rot.

I don't understand any better than you do about why, how, and when people get excited, but even though nobody is saying anything, they will download, try, and give feedback on a demo.
And I will help you to test out your map. I have a relatively powerful PC so I can also help on your optimisation for those with slightly less powerful PC's. Just give me the word on what you need me to test. And I need to test out a new style of map. I'm getting a little tired of the over-scripted and over-detailed ZDoom maps. Some nice, well used lighting and well placed architecture is all a map really needs (and by screenshots I have seen this map does a good job).

Yep exactly, and I think that in some peoples minds they wait to see what someone else will say first before they put their 2 cents in, just so they wont look bad. lol
btw, that's not directed towards you Crazedimp, we just happen to post nearly the same time.

Oh yes, that is most correct. Many times I see that once somebody says something, the next few posts agree with him, until someone dares to differ from the "general" opinion. Fasten your seatbelts: The debate starts

And if my predictions are correct, by now the author is at least moderately thankful to see some activity in his thread. ;)
Though, it has been a bit slow on all the forums lately, but things are starting to speed up a smidgen.
did I say that? is that a word? smidgen? :D

Well there will be some scripting involved, for instance, you step over a line and a radio transmission occurs, or you walk into a room and the lights go out and the computer system that runs the prison detects it and warns you of a power failure and incoming unknown lifeforms.
What I'm trying to say is that, I know Doom is based upon survival and i'm just taking it to another level of excitement and scare with what I got.

I have done alot of studying on Doom architecture and this map is the result of it. Alot of the rooms that I have done, for instance, the outside area. It took me 4 days to get that area just right. I guess my main goal is to really get a good architechtural outlook. I would add 3-D objects like weight sets and weights and lights, but I have no idea how to do that.

Your predictions are right on, thanks for bringing people into my thread. I didn't expect so many comments in such a small amount of time. :) This really means alot. It reassures me that my work isn't going to waste.

And I will help you to test out your map.
Rock on!! I'll give you an inside on what the map pertains and mostly what is going to happen to the player as they progress in the game.
Thanks to all who commented!!

Sitters is good with the 3d model stuff. In fact his maps are practically made out of 3d models. All you gotta do is make one and skin it and then make the def file. It can be hard though. I like this map though. It's looking nice.

I have no 3-D modeling or skinning knowledge at all so I would no idea where to start or how big to make it.

But while i'm here I might as well update the demo status.
The demo will not include the following :
1.) Triggers
2.) Radio transmissions
3.) Talking computer aid
4.) Monster spawning
5.) Lighting effects
6.) Scare factors
7.) Keys
8.) Huge map to explore
Demo will include the following :
1.) Basic level layout
2.) Level presentation
3.) Monsters
4.) 2 min time limit
5.) 5 or 6 rooms to explore
Final version will include the following :
1.) Triggers
2.) Radio transmissions
3.) Talking computer aid
4.) Monster spawning
5.) Lighting effects
6.) Scare factors
7.) Keys

If I may make a suggestion to your demo plan. Maybe it would be a good idea to add at least the lighting effects to it? Otherwise people will think all they are downloading is a normal, unfinished Doom map. A demo has to have at least SOME of the advanced features you will be using if you want them to maintain interest in the project.
Say like this, you have 5 or 6 rooms that take you about 2 minutes to complete, and in those rooms you have your highly detailed and spooky lighting effects, what will people think when they finish it? They are going to wait eagerly for what the complete finished product will be. Not trying to sound overly critical here, your fine without the radio transmissions and such things, but the lighting and at least one or two "Scare Factors" should be in the demo to whet peoples appetite.

I will provide more details about what I will do with the demo. But of course, I'm providing an Intro video for the map and the zip file will be passworded containing the map. So people will have to watch the video before they play the map. The password will be given at the end of the video. I will provide more information about the demo soon. Thanks! :)

Well thanks! Wow, that is a late post. I hope you at least got some sleep that day! I've pulled a couple of those nights with this map, but I suffered later that day at work, but I don't know what your situation was.
I'd say that out of all of the maps that I have made in the past, I have a really good feeling about this map. I doing the best that I can with this one. My main goal is to bring back that good 'ole scare factor back into Doom. I know Doom isn't scary anymore and I see alot of people rip apart Doom with non-sense maps and total conversion games. I know the Doom engine is compatible with alot of games, but dam, at least let Doom keep its pride and dignity of being one of the greatest FPS of its time. It's 2007, you can make a game like Doom in less then a month. But anyway, In my opinion, Doom will always be a legendary game no matter what year it is.
I'm going to have a lot of scripting involved in it, but not to a point to where it is just over-whelming. I'm also trying to avoid making a linear map in any way possible. I'm considering on releasing a teaser video of the map instead of a demo, but if a majority of people insist on a demo, then I will make a demo. Until then, take care all!! :D

Ok this question is a wierd one, but i'm going to ask it anyways. Is it possible to add echo to a room.
Example : You walk into a bathroom and all of the sounds in that room are in an echo state. The instant you leave that bathroom, everything is normal again.
I tried texture environment but it didn't work. :(
If anyone could help me, that would be great!! :)
Thanks in advance.

I thought Doomsday already had an environmental 3d sound or reverb system going on, though it might have been in an older version. That's a good question because I'v never looked into it either as far as a script modifier. But if it's still there? maybe turning up the sound-reverb-volume switch, But I'd have to do some editing doc digging myself heh.

September 24th, 2007, 08:15 AM
The reason why I ask is because my computer came with a program called "Realtek HD Audio Manager"
What it does is that it lets me configure every speaker volume individually and it has a cool little feature where I can add echo to everything on my computer. Anyway, I was playing my Urban Prison map earlier, and I went into the bathroom and it added echo to everything in the game. It was the shower echo preset. It was perfect. Now I just want to catch that sound and figure out how to script it an apply it to that sector.
If I find out how to script it, I will defiently post it on here.

Here is a small update of the map:
This is one of many new rooms completed. To clarify, the big 'ole things in the middle of the bathroom are showers and they do have running water. They are subject to change if need be. Here it is:

Hey that looks really cool, I dig how Doomsdays specific texture flats reflect on those pipes also. ;)
At one point I made a DM level for Jdoom called MK DM, yeah Mortal Kombat Deathmatch heh, had all the sounds, Ninja player sprites, even made a bunch of custom hi-res textures, and MK trilogy ogg music. But due to copyrights, I never released it.
But it reminds me of this because I was using the reflective flats in a mix of slime and water, had a cool effect. :\
Anyways Neat stuff !, keep it going. :)

Yes Doomsday still supports environmental audio effects such as reverb using the EAX library. Unfortunetly, it is a Creative only technology and as you've found, doesn't work with (onboard) Realtek HD Audio.

Then how would I go about creating a script that causes echo in one room and not the others?

Instead of a Demo, I have decided to release the final teaser video and the game will also feature a totally brand new song made completely from scratch. The teaser video will be released in the next 2 months.

Urban Prison is nearing completion and all that is left is to finish up the Red Section, finish up the scripts and finish the Intro Video and thats it! :). I'll post up the final version after it has been beta tested.

Awesome, glad to hear, and can't wait to see. ;)
About the audio, I may be wrong, but I think it's hard coded and evidently only possible to hear the effect using a Sound Blaster sound card that supports EAX.
Other than that, I guess you could try to crank up the effects : vol-sfx 255 in a custom config or something, that is if vol-sfx is different than the normal wav sounds.

I tried everything that I could think of and I just gave up on it. I didn't want to though, but I have a ton of other stuff that needs to be done. Currently, I am working on the finale script for the end of the map.
There is going to be alot in store for the players that play this map.

The movie is the storyline for the map. It gives the player knowledge of what happened at this prison and what there mission is. it took me a bout 3 months to make it and I hope you viewers enjoy it!
PLEASE leave feedback!
Thanks in advance. *flip*
p.s. - You need Windows Media Player to play it!!
