To Kill an American
You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is . So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)

"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan . The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan . Americans welcome the best of everything...the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least.

The national symbol of America , The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America .

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

America was founded on beautiful ideas and morals. The problem lies in the execution. The institutions that worked nearly 300 years ago for a nation of a few million does not function the same way today with a population of over 300,000,000. The system has fallen into disrepair, and it is time to optimize and streamline the workings of the country while keeping the vision alive.

the system has indeed been hijacked and the most abysmal of consperacy theories even predict the coming of an age when our freedoms are revoked by the evil wealthy elites who undeniably run this country now.

Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.but thing like this lift my hope. they remind me of the righteous human spirit and intellect that formed this country. We the People... what a revolutionary idea for its time.

Pretty sure America was always controlled largely by those wealthy elites. They just had different styles at different times. Some of them couldn't care if they knew what everybody was up to.

And I thought America was founded on the idea that they didn't want to pay taxes to the English and listen to governors from across the ocean. The beautiful ideas and morals kicked in a few years later when the government, which happened to be full of clever people, realized it needed some structure. Even that took a couple tries, which is why Washington became president in 1789 instead of 1776.

I like that little piece. It's so true. Though it doesn't address how similar a lot of Canadians are to Americans. Most people can't tell my accent isn't American for example. Guess that means I'm screwed in Afghanistan. :D

I have a shirt that says CANADA across it in huge white letters. I have yet to entirely figure out why I feel somewhat wrong when I wear it. *confused*

America is the land of the free (sort of). But it also reminds me dumbass blonde film stars and the channel known as E!. Also all that spiritual crap annoys me. I guess I have the emotional range of a teaspoon, don't I?

I agree that a very subjective look is given.

That guy needs to check up on some recent and past events. America did indeed help a lot of other countries, but we've also done some pretty nasty stuff as well. I think the song "...And justice for all" sums it up pretty well.

Looks like his view of America is pretty much the view the American goverment WANTS you to have. *wacky*

I remember listening to a guy ramble at a Monster truck show, and he was talking about how America is the last superpower on Earth and how we're the best country ever, and I was thinking "Wow, he's so ignorant".

I guarantee America is still good enough to validate the guy's point. Yes, the flag waving a lot of Americans do is dumb and often ignorant but there are more worse places to be than better places.

Isn't burning the flag outlawed in the United States?

I think it depends on the state your in. even so, you might be putting yourself in harms way if you did it. I wouldn't tackle or jump anybody I saw doing it, but I would ask them why they were doing it and try to kick up a rational conversation about it.

I don't really have to much against burning flags, although, as you said, the reason behind it does have significance.

If I was going to burn a flag I would gladly discuss my reasoning. But I would probably get shot. Maybe even by my dad. >.>

Anyway, flag burning is cliche.

I have no problem with burning a flag if it's for a valid reason.

That's what I'm saying. Burning the flag for a good reason is nothing wrong.
