PumpkinSmasher's "OMGPump2" has to be one of the most frustrating yet fulfilling WADs since Hell Revealed II. On my Linux system, I had to play without sound, so that may have contributed to my extreme desire to shoot my computer. The WAD is no walk in the park, but you'll have fun while playing it.

First off, the theme here is a refreshing blend of green marble and UAC textures. The theme appears to be a scientific/military installation that's been partially converted into an outpost of hell. There's some strange texture choices here; in the beginning area, two sets of bricks, with different sizes and colors, are slapped onto adjacent linedefs, creating a clearly impractical and unrealistic structure. However, as Doom is not a realistic game, this doesn't detract much from the great appeal of the level.

PumpkinSmasher shows some good expertise with lighting; the patterns at which lights and shadows are cast are somewhat logical and the overall effect helps to create the appropriate mood for each area. The structures are well-designed and aesthetically pleasing, and monsters are strategically placed on or around them to keep players on their toes. The monsters are all well-chosen and mostly balanced, but there is an obscene lack of health for most of the level. You will find yourself with less than 30% health running down a dark hallway with monsters' growls echoing all around you, and this tension is an excellent display of this level's quality.

But, the lack of health may cause some of you to want to shoot your computers. A player may find himself thinking, "There must be a stimpack around here somewhere!", only to turn a corner and be surrounded by imps and shotgun guys. It's important to know that I resorted to god mode to complete this level because of these anger-inducing incidents.

The layout is well-done, and PS (PumpkinSmasher) has constructed the level so that players often return to the beginning area.
Overall, this is a well-made, fun level that's worth a download.
