It´s a bit hard to start speaking about this wad without being harsh. It´s not that the wad is incredibly awful or something but just that it looks like a joke on the player. Why?. Well, don´t read the review, play the wad first and then come back and read this. You will be thinking something along the lines of "Is that all?". It seems that that´s all that the wad has to offer: a really short playing experience in a single area with nothing new.
When I write my reviews I have a little guide that I follow so I can speak about the different aspects of a wad. This pharagraph would be devoted to "Lenght, playability and fun.". What can I say?. The lenght of this wad is around the two minutes. You could think that it´s not that bad as your first play through Map01 of the original Doom 2 wad took a similar time but that map had something that this map doesn´t: fun. The only area in this map, relatively cramped with enemies is just boring to play. It may be exciting in the first playthrough but without an strategy this just looks like a bunch of enemies put together towards you... And if you have fun with that kind of battles the lenght of the map will finally put all hopes for fun out. Maybe the playability is not that bad as you can try some interesting dances around your enemies to dispose of them but, again, it´s just too short to provide a memorable experience. The replayability value is, thus, near zero. How about playing a single arena over and over again?.
But in a sense, this wad makes me angry. When I first loaded it I thought that it looked nice and it was somewhat promising: a river of nukage, a bridge, a gate at the end and a lot of monsters in the middle. You start fighting your way in that area so you can breach trough the gate and as you do so you notice some 3d ceiling, a somewhat tidy layout and a very sober look: nothing disgusting at all. It can be disgusting to fall into the nukage river but then you notice (as you die) that it´s swimmable and that it adds some depth to the map. In your next play you notice the almost cliché stone path from where you supposedly came at your back and when you cross the bridge all the weapons are tidily set up on the floor. Finally, you´re about to find what lays behind the gate... You get to it, you open it and get a glimpse of a horrible battle. You die. You try again. You die but you keep on trying as maybe the wad will calm down later, as it looks promising now. When you finally make it you get inside the building and the map ends. The whole process takes a few minutes. And that´s all... At least it could make for a fun "Time trial" battle in cooperative mode because with that layout Dm battles must be annoying.
But anyway, I find no sense in discussing the architecture or the look of this map: it´s enough saying that it looks tidy, sober, nice. There is also little point in discussing the monster placement as there´s virtually only two battles linked together and little space to apply any strategy regarding the items you can find. Is there a point in discussing anything about this map?. Well, I´d say so: I´d like to discuss (with you readers) about this map being complete or not.
And there´s nothing else to say. I don´t like low scores and I do respect every author´s conception of their maps but a map with such a short life is easily forgettable. It earns a two because it looked interesting.
