Budrum is a single player level by Michael "Optimus" Kargas. Let me tell you, don't let this authors lame excuse of it being his first doom 2 wad fool you(see text file), this level definitely has the polished design of a great level designer. Playing through this level you will realize that it has some great effects and really take the shadowing in doom to a whole new level. This level also has some very great moments right up to the end. With the details also being in very good taste, this is a definitely gets my recommendation as one of the plays of the week. This level earns its 8 out of 10.
This level has a very extensive layout, when I played through it clocked in at about 20 minutes. This level also has tons of nice areas and lots of different shapes and size rooms ranging from barely fitting hallways to a huge outside area. While the layout might be pretty big, details seems to be a little too spread out. In some areas you will locate some very original and interesting detail, but in a lot of areas you just get a plain hallway. Nevertheless the details that are included really make up for its lack of appearance. Unlike detail, that was spread out in big gaps, the lighting stayed beautifully consistent throughout the whole level. I would wager to say that those who would like lessons on lighting a level, this level should definitely be on your inspirations list. The author also make some very nice details added within the lighting, finding ways to block lighting where it doesn't belong (First Pic). Only real compliant on layout is that the author may have used too many textures, it seem to really pull away from the main theme of the level. It is recommended that textures should be made the same more often then switching to new textures every couple of rooms.
Gameplay was magnificent, with a nice ammo/monster balance, this level receives high marks in playability. With its constant change of environment and pace of gameplay, you will find this level far from boring. You will also notice through the course of play that the layout has been giving specific thought to the terms of gameplay such as different effects like a wall blowing up and a bridge that has been broken(Second Pic) as well as a variety of other special features. I think you will find that the level has been well fitted with monsters and that it shouldn't be too difficult to make your way through the horrible hellspawn. One thing that I found this level reminding me of though is that sometimes its a lot more easier to have the monsters fight the fight for you than having you get yourself killed(Third Pic). In this level using brains is about as powerful as the wits to destroy your opponents.
Overall this level comes with my very high recommendations to play this week. I will mention that as I played through the level, some of the special effect may cause some trouble in multiplayer, so it really is recommended that you play this level in single player for yourself. With its special effect, lighting, and great detail, you might just find this your inspirations to bring the next awesome level to newstuff and to newdoom reviews.
