Aztec666 is a single player level by Hans de Heus. While still delievering a entertaining play, aztec666 is far from perfect. Little bits of work could be done to make this level much better such as getting rid of all those darn switches. Either way the level fits its intended theme well, and there seems to be some really nice battles within the level, but you will find ammo a bit tight so be prepared to use it sparingly.

As you might have guess by the name, this level take place in a demonic aztec looking temple. The general layout was pretty cool, but still a bit too plain to be the kind of eye candy expected today. All hallways were kind of dark, this level may have been much better with some lighting effects, lighting pretty much gives flavor to levels. The heights of the ceiling and floors may also be a contribing factor to this level getting a less that average rating. Almost everything takes place on one flat floor, with no real change in the ceiling either, most changes that were done to the floor were added within the rocky formations that were in both an outside area and in a downstairs dungeon. This level could have also used more secrets, and the selected sector for the secret area caused a delayed reaction in the found secret message when I played it.

I hope you like hitting switches, because you will be doing it ALOT. The levels general gameplay is walk in this room, hit this switch, then walk in a new room to be locked in, then having to hit two switches, one to open the room your are now locked in, and one for a new path. So where does this new path lead, well it leads to another room, that you get locked in, where there are these two switches... you get the idea. The fact that this level had absolutly no keys didn't really help things much. Keys are really the things that keeps vanilla doom levels going, it keeps to gameplay from becoming repetive. I don't believe anyone will want to play this for very long, there isn't really anything new to see that can't be seen in the first minute.

There were not really any moments that were too over powering within this level. I must also say that the ammo was boarderline balanced, I think this level could have used a bit more ammo. It does however seem to give just enough ammo to finish out the level, but you may find yourself ending up switching to the chaingun to finish off a baddy you started on with a shotgun.

Due to the textfile I assume this author hasn't made too many levels and if thats the case, this level isn't really too bad by a beginners extent. It is recommened that the above be given some considerations when release newer levels. With a bit more detail, added lighting, more heights, and some keys, this level could have been a top hit. Keep at it.

This level earns a 4 out of 10.
