Welcome to Doom Arena, A very place that many of doom's finest deathmatchers rise and fall upon there victims and victors. This very place is an arena of champions, were statues of various heros stand unaltered through each deathmatch event ever held. These statues include the great many monsters found throughout dooms gory hell. At the end of the day, only one deathmatcher will arise to become arena champion once again.
Doom Arena is a deathmatch level that has been made by John D. Corrado ( DOOMFLYNN). The level itself dates back to 2000, but yet might still retain some value in its efforts to bring about some fun deathmatch. The layout of this level is pretty simple in its having symmetrical and very open ended paths, definitely defining its title of doom arena. However, the design is a bit too plain, not really giving the players anything to hide behind, and not really making other players hard to find either. Expect to have a lot of long range gun fights because you can see player miles on in.
The level features some gameplay that might have been a lot better had this level had more geometry to it. This map is definitely not a two player bout, this arena is really just a huge square, it is recommended that you play with between 6-8 players, or this arena may become boring in a search to find an opponent. The lack of things to hide behind really hurts this level in its fun factor, you pretty much just running and gunning then using strategies in this deathmatch.
Deathmatch arenas can be a fun thing to play on, but if it doesn't have a catchy layout, then your pretty much a sitting duck, with nothing to be able to give you or another an advantage of experience. What is definitely worth noting within this level is the authors use of the original doom monsters as statues, well yes, its something that has been seen in some deathmatch wads before, but this level has pretty much all the doom monsters in it.
Overall this arena can could have been better, had more thought gone into the design and had the concentration on gameplay been better. The arena is plain, symmetrical and has little details of monster statues spread throughout the level. It really doesn't make for too exciting of gameplay, with its layout clipping what little strategies the level could have had. On the other hand, this level might be great for a very large play session of about 6 - 8 players and bring some of those so well remembered deathmatch moments to memory.
