Where shall I begin when describing this map? Ah yes, the cryo chambers. There are several throughout the map, in nicely placed locations, and each holds a....surprise of sorts, just for you. In this alone, it holds to the map's storyline(as such), and even makes you want(if even a little) to continue through the hallways to find out what lies beyond. Several hidden caches of demons, triggered during certain moments/when the player does something somewhere, also add to the surprise factor.....keeping you on your toes, and your finger on the fire key during most battles. This is definately a MUST play for all hardcore doom players out there, as well as the more hardy beginners. Doom on.
Graphics/Lighting: Score: 6.5/10 - Slightly above average
The graphics used in this "interesting" little tale are mostly the techno/base textures from the original game, but are used in some nice ways....like the aforementioned cryo chambers, which look rather nice when you get to see them operate. The other areas will look a bit similar after awhile; but considering the size of this map & it's few nice surprises, I don't think it will make many people get bored with it during the first and even second & third playthroughs.
Lighting is alright, such as to say nothing is too dark or too bright.....with maybe the one exception being the "computer" room(You'll see, but bring a flashlight will ya?). In other areas, the lighting is actually toned quite nicely, even though there aren't many shadows or other cool effects.
Weapon/Health Placement: Score: 6/10 - Slightly above average
As far as weapons and ammo go, you'll be set no matter how good a player you are, as most baddies in this installment carry some weapon or other......and there are also several weapon caches as you go through the level. You might even think you get too much in some cases, with all the spare ammo you'll have at the end. Now health is a different story......as health packs and armor are slim in this level, compared to enemy numbers, and if you are a beginning player you may want to set the difficulty low because of this. Otherwise, you should be fine, as long as you save as smart as you play anyways.
Monsters & placement: Score: 6/10
Yes, there are demons to kill....and yes, there are a very good number of them in this level. This alone would make any fragger content, but there is one "minor" problem: All of them are spawned from the same 3 monster types, for the most part. Now before someone says that it's better than having all imps or such in a level, I admit it has a plus side. It adds a bit of predictability in some cases during battles for beginner players, and allows the level to make sense as far as storyline goes......making some demons "mutants", and the rest as guards. (That's why I gave it such a high score, and why I vote high for storyline based wads in all aspects. Crash out.)
As for placement.....alot of the monsters you'll face will either be waiting for you as you progress through the rooms and halls, or will surprise you later on after various events. As such, placement was good, and frag lovers will have a good time with this one.
Praises - Good graphical adherance to storyline. Good texture usage/level layout.
Cons - Not enough health. Hard for beginners for the most part, because of low health and amounts of enemies.
Bugs - An enemy can get stuck the the eastern "warehouse" room stairs on occasion, making it almost impossible to shoot it.
