According to the read me this is an authors first publicly released wad, from early 95. Shaft consists of 2 small maps (that could have easily been combined into one) with an underground theme and an underground lair (those demons and their secret underground lairs!) respectively.

Both maps consist of a central area with “spokes” with a switch or key at the end that open another “spoke”.

Visually the levels are nothing special and if anything rather dull to look at. Though the texture choices fit the theme/style of the maps and the lighting was simple but natural (i.e. it was light and dark where you would expect it to be).

Is this wad worth the download? Sadly I would say no. It’s just too easy and short. Nuff Said!

Map 1

As with most old maps with such a theme, there’s lot’s of “twisted” narrow corridors with lot’s of small and random elevation changes in this map that have weak bad guys placed randomly down them.

Which is fine if there is also something else, but sadly the first map of this wad pretty much just consists of these corridors. Combined with only a single monster pen which IMO is placed poorly and a fair bit of health, this means the first map provides no challenge at tall. Though the map is short enough that it doesn’t become a chore to play though.

There is a trigger that I believe was suppose to lower the player into a pit, with an Arachnotron at the bottom, that their over looking. But the wrong trigger type is used and so it doesn’t lower. It doesn’t impact play particularly though since you’ve got to jump down into the pit to progress anyway.

Map2

The underground lair. Most of the map is decked out in Wood textures though there is also a bit of hell and marble.

Despite the increase in themes, the second map is roughly as big as the first, though the layout can make it seem smaller.

There are a few tougher foes on this map than the first, but they don’t raise the difficulty any higher than the first map. If anything it’s even easier than the first map because of the presence of a large amount of heath pickups and an unesscerry DB Shotgun.

A small note. It is possible to get the yellow key without raising the bridge, skipping part of the map.
