What first caught my attention was the name of the author. I can´t exactly understand why but his name is carved in my mind as the creator of "Cut", the music for Ebola´s "Phobia" map... Or at least, they share the same name. Anyway, I wasn´t expecting a lot from this wad and in the end I´m satisfied enough with it. To set the mood and know exactly what you have to do just read the txt file: you are a soldier on your last mission: enter a cave of evil, get to a teleporter to another dimension and, once there, survive long enough until "Your existance alone disrupts their connection to our world". Seems simple?. It is, in fact. All you have to do is grab your shotgun and endure killing the hordes of monsters in sight. Then move to the next section and keep enduring. Keep it until you get to the end... You see, it´s a very simple wad.
Does this simple gameplay pattern affect the result?. Well, it depends on what you´re looking for. Just to state this clear, this wad has not a single puzzle not it. Not a single switch, not a single door, no nothing. All it offers it´s ammo, weapons, health and locked chambers where monsters are... Still, it´s a package with a lot of fun. A shooting gallery in the end, but a fun one.
The fun factor is provided not only by the hordes of monsters but also by the tight balance of ammo and health there. Health is more than scarce and though you see a lot of shell boxes lying around the cave you´ll find that they´re not enough when the hordes are unleashed, specially when the monsters block your path to them and you´re running out of ammo. This happens specially during the first encounter since once you get past it, everything gets much easier and when reaching the last section you´re given a lot of weapons that can guarantee your victory if you just keep yourself alive (no ending switch to this level, just endure and win). The other part of the fun factor is the scenario. The cave itself is well designed and keeps itself simple yet fitting to the fights, with lots of curve walls, height changes and dead ends. There´s some eye candy dropped there, like the blood lake part with some light coming from above, but nothing really looks bad or out of place there. If anything, it looks quite dark (except in the rare open-sky moments) and repetitive and that may become it´s greatest visual flaw: there´s only two environments and the one in wich you´ll spent most time is repetitive on itself. Fortunately, this wad is quite short and repetitiveness doesn´t become a problem unless you play once and again.
Gameplay wise it´s nothing new. There´s tight ammo and health as said and the usual secrets (one of them specially enjoyable to find, the other plain easy to see) that will help you out against the hordes. Monsters are mainly imps and demons with appearances of cacodemons and bigger foes later on. Excessive given only a shotgun?. Well, maybe. I found myself with little problems to survive (except during the two first tries of the last section) but I´m sure that beginner players will find frustrating to keep on killing endless amounts of monsters (not that much really, over 150). The difficulty settings don´t help a lot too since they only tweak the last sections of the cave making the stronger monsters appear and leaving the first encounters untouched... Anyway, even for the beginners there are tricks and places that can help getting a victory like, from example, exploring the cave and finding the best spots for fights (one of them makes it really easy to win) and, of course, trying to never run into dead ends.
So, finally, is it worth?. Let´s see... If you don´t like to keep your finger on the "Fire" key and move around your crosshair stay this is not your wad. If you look for complicated puzzles and key action this ain´t your wad too... If you just don´t mind to wander a shooting gallery with no rest for your trigger finger and you get fun from it, play. This wad is pure carnage, really simple, really plain and with no other purpose to it. It gets a 7 ´cos I found it fun enough but bear in mind that once played there´s no sense in coming back.
