It´s not like I didn´t like this wad, but I feel that, first of it all, I must warn every reader about it´s style: you would say this is one of this contemporary wads that certainly makes Doom look like Doom no more. This is nothing positive or negative, it´s just to let you know since I know there are people out there that prefer Doom as it was. Personally I liked the style: I have played other works of the author and this seems to be far more playable and tidy up that these others to the point that it´s too playable.
The whole concept of the map seems to revolve around E1M1. This unforgettable layout is somewhat imitated with a switch on the themes and some added spice that wasn´t there but in the end, you will feel like you´ve been there before. And I liked the Deja-Vu feeling for sure... Again, it´s not like this wad is a remake of E1M1 since walls are not where they should be and the ending part is completely different but, when looking to some parts, you will be saying that "I knew that armor was there" or "There had to be some slime". It´s just that each of the parts has been twisted, detailed and made different but somewhat the same... In fact, there´s nothing to point out to the only secret area of this map except for your memory and common sense since you will know that "It had to be there". It´s hard to explain the feel so you´d better play it yourself.
The visuals, layout and music were as espected (with some glimpses of previous wads outlining what is to be called "a certain style"), even more elegant... but gameplay was completely different from what I was up to. The recent works of the author have always been a hell of difficult for me while this one was just plain easy: I had no problems at all to achieve the 100% and in no moment you´ll need a weapon such as the chaingun: most monsters are weak and can be wiped out with your trusty shotgun... Surely the gameplay of this wad will be more appealing to beginners given the fact that veteran players will find this unchallenging even in Ultra Violence. It´s also fair to add that the map size is small so this wad will be finished in a breeze and you will be only coming back to get the secret (in case you missed it).
Still, the text file warns clearly that this is intended to be a small and easy map. That is what the author wants and that we have to assume but I can´t help but think that this map could have been much better in terms of gameplay if some puzzles would have been thrown in along with a hardest approach to the fights. So, well, visually this is a map with nothing to complain about (the E1M1 idea is still fresh too) but it leaves a sense of unfullfillment after playing due to it´s easyness. It´s good as a small entertainment but expect nothing more than that in terms of gameplay and replayability value.
To sum things up, the wad has a nice atmosphere and look. It plays easy and nice from the very first moment and a few moments after you´re done with it. Tastes good while it lasts but leaves you hungry. As always, I will be rating the fun value so this wads does not reach further than a 6. Play it anyway, enjoy it as I did and then comment if, with this nice envelope to it, you only wished it was more challenging.
