Millenium Actress on DVD. This is Japanese Anime at its finest - wonderful animation, great story line, and interesting plot devices.
Voices of a Distant Star on DVD. Another Japanese Anime film with great animation. The story line was a bit wishy-washy, and the movie was only 25 minutes long. Go figure.

I was just watching Christmas-y movies on TV today. I saw something with some kind of "Saint Nick is pretending to be a normal guy to steal a reindeer from a zoo" plotty. It was amusing. I also saw Bewitched, a movie about a witch playing a witch in a television series. It was also amusing, starring Will Ferril.

I've read it. It's pretty cool, though it has some strange moments.
There's also Frank Miller's Robocop, a miniseries did by some studio and guys I don't know that's based on the original script Frank did for Robocop 2 and 3. The movies actually changed a lot of it, that's why they suck. I'm still wishing to read this.

So anyway, yesterday I saw The Golden Compass in a theatre. It was a good fantasy film. Damn good. I want to read the novel now. It's part of a trilogy
I also saw Planet Terror. This was co-released with Death Proof (which I have yet to see). The movie is part of the "Grindhouse" set (along with Death Proof). It is a kick-ass zombie movie, with the blood level comparable to Evil Dead.

Evil Dead (well, as a series anyways, the first movie was kinda lame in contrast to the amazing sequels) blows Planet Terror out of the water, though it is a very strong homage to that series and the like. I downloaded Robocop VS. Terminator and Frank Miller's Robocop. Both are amazing, though I like RvT better, for story and character development. I have to say Frank Miller's Robocop was fascinating, and had the better artwork of the two. It was much more over the top and violent. What was the deal with officer Lewis? It seemed like every page was an opportunity to tear off more and more of her uniform. Not saying I minded to much (she was very attractive in that comic [and in the movies]).

Alien Quadrilogy (not in the sale, but reduced from £70 to £15. Sí por favor!)

Nice! Those are some sweet picks! I have a Alien Set around here somewhere, except it's not mine. I might enjoy it while I can.
So I saw Death Proof. Fucking brilliant! Along with Planet Terror, it would make an excellent present.
I also saw Hypercube and Cube Zero. They don't compare to Cube.
Then, I had the horrible misfortune of seeing Shrek the Third. I chuckled once, and the rest is crap. Don't see this if you don't have to.
Yesterday I watched Stardust and Superbad. Stardust was great. Pretty faithful to the book, too. Superbad was genius. A laugh riot.
Also, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The Pirates series are some good comedy-adventure style movies. Some of the best.

I watched Dark City yesterday with a friend. If some of you have played Max Payne 2 (and all of you should have), you'll find this movie quite familiar in some aspects. The little TV programs you find during the course of the game are almost an exact copy of Dark City. Heck, even the names are similar, John Mirra in the game, John Murdoch in the movie.
All in all, it was a good movie up until the ending, which was silly.

Hostage on DVD, again. Bruce Willis gives a good performance as an occasionally frightened hostage negotiator. Overall, I'd give this movie 3 thumbs up as a tense and action-packed movie (although it does go over the top at times).
Norbit on DVD. Eddie Murphy as a nerdy guy, as an overweight (and domineering) woman to whom the nerd is married, and as a Chinese bigot who plays the nerd's adoptive father. It's a pretty cheesy movie, but has some laughs. The big draw, I suppose, is seeing Eddie Murphy in 3 very different roles. [Although, if you've seen Bowfinger, you'll realize where Eddie Murphy got his nerd character from.]
Sweet Home Alabama on DVD. Reese Witherspoon does a good job, but the supporting characters are very typecast. A light and funny movie that is easily forgotten.

I recently got Silent Hill on my iPod, and a friend and I watched about 35% of it the other night. I have to say for a video game movie it was very good, and although the fact that all the music was just copied directly from the games did make it feel somewhat cheap, it also made it feel a lot more like the game.
I need to get around to watching the rest of it.

The Forgotten on DVD. Starts out as a chilling tale of neurosis and suspicion, then devolves into a somewhat predictable (but suspenseful, nevertheless) narrative of government collusion & cover-up. [I'm not giving away any of the plot, because what the cover-up is about becomes known about halfway through the movie.] Very X-Files, for those that watched TV in the 1990s.

The Man With One Red Shoe on DVD. Tom Hanks, as usual, does a bang-up job. Pretty funny scene with David Ogden Stiers as the conductor of the Washington Orchestra performing Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade.
E.T. on DVD. What can I say? It's a classic, and one that I never tire of watching.
Munich on DVD. Slick thriller based on the actual events of the kidnapping & murders of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Pretty good performances and directing.
Lady in the Water on DVD. Somewhat hokey ideas from M. Night Shyamalan that overshadow a fairly good performance by Paul Giamatti.
Manchurian Candidate on DVD. Excellent thriller with a terrific performance by Liev Schreiber, and Meryl Streep as his manipulative and ambitious mother.
Date Movie on DVD. Pretty crappy movie that parodies everything and is irreverent towards fat people, dwarves, blacks, whites, Michael Jackson, Greeks, Indians, Jews, Asians, old people, Michael Jackson .... you get the idea. Fairly disgusting at times, with potty humor involving a cat. Avoid like a mouth sore.

Shutter (http://imdb.com/title/tt0482599/)(4.7/10) was ok, but pales in comparison to the Thai version. I liked Leatherheads (http://imdb.com/title/tt0379865/)(6.2/10). I've heard Nim's Island (http://imdb.com/title/tt0410377/)(6.2/10) was pretty good, although more of a children's-type thing (Harry Potter/Chronicles of Narnia). I personally would not touch The Ruins (http://imdb.com/title/tt0963794/)(6.6/10, wtf?) or Street Kings (http://imdb.com/title/tt0421073/)(7.5/10) with a 20 foot pole. But I have heard that Horton Hears a Who (http://imdb.com/title/tt0451079/)(7.6/10) was pretty good.

[Not strictly a movie, but this fits into the DVD category.]
I've been watching the HBO/BBC series from 2006-2007, Rome. It is a spectacular costumed pageant that is often raw and brutal, and shows both the nobility and corruption of the time. It's a very well done drama, and I highly recommend it for both its entertainment value and it's insights into history. While many of the characters are fictitious, the show is set in a real time in the transition from Rome as a republic to Rome as an empire. Definitely not for younger viewers, both for scenes of extreme violence and overt sexuality.
I'd buy the 2-season set, but it's still pretty pricey at about US$ 125 for both. I'll wait for it to drop to around $100 before making a decision. Meanwhile, I shall continue to borrow it from the library.

Flags of Our Fathers on DVD. One side of the Iwo Jima story (the other side is told in Letters From Iwo Jima, also by Clint Eastwood & Steven Spielberg). The story is told in a non-linear fashion, which took me a little while to get used to. After that I was able to enjoy it as a historical episode, but at the end of the movie I still couldn't figure out who the many secondary characters were. The focus is strictly on the 3 main characters, and others seem to be pushed into the background. I suppose the only way to get more of the non-central characters is to watch the movie again.

Robin Williams plays a dangerously normal-seeming author who has a way of rationalizing things in a most convincing manner. Hilary Swank plays a rookie detective in the Alaskan town who idolizes the L.A. detective.

Just saw WALL-E. Without a doubt the most captivating animated film (and one of the most captivating of any genre) I've ever seen, visually, aurally (the soundtrack by Thomas Newman is, as usual, phenomenal), and emotionally, bar none. Pixar > all. I have trouble imagining how they will top that one.
To be fair, the message is dark and a bit offensive (in the literal sense of the word), and whether it's for kids is possibly questionable, but it's fantastic regardless.
Otherwise, lately I saw Get Smart, Apocalypto, and The Happening. Get Smart was hilarious, Apocalypto was great (despite its Mel Gibson), and The Happening was so-so, but definitely not one of Shyamalan's better films (and not to mention implausible, though it is fiction after all).

heh, he's a really good kid when it comes to movies that he likes. He will sit through "Cars" without a peep. I'm hoping it is the same for WALL-E.
I'm not one of those parents who would take their child to see a movie that isn't age-appropriate. We believe very much in making sure what he does watch is not only minimal, but also very kid-friendly. We saw a family with a child probably younger than a year old seeing "The Strangers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482606/)", and I really wanted to sterilize the parents for creating another serial killer.
Also, our son is in love with "Ducktales" (we own the entire series plus the movie). We decided not to have cable tv, so he wouldn't grow up watching mindless junk 24/7. We have tight reign over what he watches and when, and he truly prefers going outside to sitting in front of the TV.
Anyway, good Dad rant notwithstanding, I'm about halfway through "Stargate: Continuum" and it's pretty freaking awesome.
Edit: That movie was freaking awesome. I really wish the series hadn't ended. I still have yet to start watching Atlantis, though.

Saw Hancock today. Good, not great. It had some great moments, but the pacing wasn't very good. The bad guy was only in the movie for the last forty minutes, the main character's "superhero who does things the messy way" thing only lasted for the first thirty minutes, and the whole plot sort of goes downhill half way through.
But in spite of all that, it wasn't bad.

Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the movie theater. In many ways it's like the earlier movies - plenty of chases, fights, and exotic locales to deliver thrills. But in many ways it's also predictable - the protagonists always manage to get themselves into hot water and manage to jump the pot before it comes to a boil. Unfortunately, the main villain (in this case villainess) just didn't do anything for me. In fact, the main henchman seemed to be more of a villain. Overall, though, it was a couple of hours well spent.

As long as you teach your children to know the difference between real and fantasy, and what he should or shouldn't do in real life, you're okay with him.

Oh, I know, I just hate it when parents are sucked into modern culture and give their kids free reign over the entirety of it. I'm a firm believer in watching things first, so that I can determine whether or not it's appropriate for my child and his development.
Not saying that violent stuff breeds psychopaths, but generally, if a parent takes their 1 year old to see a slasher flick, how well do you think they are doing in other areas of parenting?
Anyway, going to catch WALL-E tonight, and see how my son does in a theatre for the first time. I just hope it isn't too overwhelming for him. My wife has an exit plan just in case.

We did go to see WALL-E last night. I really, really enjoyed the movie, probably one of the best this year (It's hard to beat Iron Man, though).
My son did very well in the theatre. I was a little worried because there were three or four other families. We let him run around (chaperoned, of course) until the rushes started, and he sat on someone's lap the whole time. It wasn't until the last 10 minutes or so that he started to get a little fussy, but it was 40 minutes past his usual bed time, so it's understandable. He did make it through to the credits though. Mission successful!

I watched The 300 Spartans, the 1962 film starring Richard Egan as Leonidas and David Farrar as Xerxes. I thought it was a pretty good movie.... there was quite a bit of talking and it took about an hour before any action appears. Overall it was enjoyable and the fight scenes were pretty well done for the time, considering they didn't have the effects we have today. I also liked that fact that the Spartan armor looked used. There is one scene where a line of Spartans is standing side by side and their shields and helms appear dented and scuffed and this is before any fighting. Good film and interesting to watch after seeing 300.

Time Bandits on DVD. Featuring Sean Connery (as Agamemnon), John Cleese (as Robin Hood), and Ian Holm (as Napoleon). You've no doubt guessed that this is not your run-of-the-mill time travel movie. Actually, it's Monty Python meets The Time Machine. Unfortunately, the movie straddles the line between being an outright comedy and an outright adventure and only marginally succeeds in its effort. With the exception of a few good one-liners (that hearken back to Monty Python) the movie is generally unmemorable.

Batman Begins on DVD for the second time. I watched it as a prelude to watching the sequel in the movie theater. Excellent background & history for the creation of the Batman, even though we don't actually get to see a Batman until almost an hour into the movie. It's good to see Liam Neeson in a role different from his typical goodie-two-shoes roles, even though he does it in his characteristically understated manner. Cillian Murphy plays his role as State Psychiatrist and alter-ego Scarecrow in an enjoyably chilling manner.
The Dark Knight in the movie theater. The movie ought to have been named The Joker, because IMO it's that character that really steals the show. Heath Ledger shines as the maniacal psychopath who stays one step ahead of the law and the city's chief vigilante, Batman. The corruption of Harvey Dent into Two-Face is also a noteworthy side-story. Overall, three thumbs up and a movie that is worth watching a second time.
The Pink Panther on DVD for the second time. Steve Martin excels as the bumbling, ego-inflated Jacques Clouseau. Kevin Kline was a little disappointing as Chief Inspector Dreyfus, but was adequate. Jean Reno was a good foil and straight man to Steve, and Beyonce Knowles was good in her role as pretty pop star that seems to be at the center of the murder of Yves Gluant. Generally funny. (Note that I've steered away from a comparison of performances by Peter Sellers and Steve Martin.)
Howl's Moving Castle on DVD for the second time. Hayao Miyazaki's touch as a writer and director clearly shine through. A haunting story with marvellous animation and music.
DooM on DVD. I finally watched the movie (I bought the DVD). Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Karl Urban lead a Marine Assault Team to Mars to investigate and control a situation that is familiar to all of us. I must say that after reading the reviews I expected very little from the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is an often tense drama with fairly good character development and a fast pace. The production value is top-notch, with believable sci-fi architecture and environments. It certainly is not DooM or DooM2; rather it is DooM3 for co-op, with a cute female lead thrown in. I recommend this movie to all sci-fi movie fans, and to DooM fans as well (despite it being only DooM3).

Ghost Rider was a pretty decent popcorn flick save a few corny/badly delivered lines ("I am leeeegiooon.... We are... MAAAANYYYYY!"); Hancock was much the same. Tropic Thunder was so funny it was ridiculous, and vice versa. TDK was brilliant.
Deja Vu and MIB I've seen before (though I hadn't seen MIB in forever so it doesn't really count), but they were also pretty good.

Had a movie marathon.
Superhero Movie: It wasn't that bad, underrated possibly, certainly better than the Epic Movie and others. Think Scary movie 4. Similar stuff, it does have a plot at least, and some chuckles here and there, that's about it.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Quite hilarious, a very enjoyable movie, probably a comedy of the year I reckon. A bit smutty but funny, brave acting by the main fellow, stark naked in scenes. For other actors to be able to act in front of a naked man, that does require good acting focus, heh.
Vantage Point: Not a bad thriller, it was consistently interesting with a good ending, I enjoyed it.
