Hi guys - I've just got prboom working BEAUTIFULLY in VMware workstation 5.something THANK GOD! Everything else I tries uses GL only (AKK! not good in an emulator and in software mode). I LOVE Deng, but thats on the windows install so it can access the accelerated hardware.

ANYWAY - I'm running prboom 2.2.6 from a binary package, in PC-BSD ( http://www.pcbsd.org ) , in VMWare on windows XP. If that isn't ENOUGH portage/emulation, FreeBSD (PC-BSD base system) has no native midi (dev/sequencer busted for years), and VMWare never bothered to hook up the midi to the host OS.

SO..... I'm relying on timidity ... but wait - it gets uglier : ) I'm using timidity++, and these doom ports seem to want the ancient (and rotting) original timidity installed - and guess what - they are NOT compatible on the same system (name is the same, but the config file location is different, and the ++ version has billions better stuffs) : ( GROWL.

SO .... I "ln -s /usr/local/share/timidity /etc" and the music fires up and it's all cool for about 60 seconds and then
"I_ShutdownMusic: removing /tmp/prboom-music-RuahWa
I_ShutdownSound:
^[[B%"

Maybe NOT what I was after : ) I see in the /.prboom/cfg" file there is a listing at the end:

# Music
mus_e1m1 "e1m1.mp3"
mus_e1m2 "e1m2.mp3"
blah blah blah

Does this mean I can substitue the midi music for MP3's of these names? If so, where do I put them? I can write my own .wav out and MP3 and rename them, or download a set if there is any available (???), but - where do I put them, and how do I make them active? ...... or am I just living too deep in emulation fantasyland?

Thanks to ANYONE who read this far : )

If so, where do I put them?Yes, just have an MP3 with the appropriate name in a place where the program will find it, and it will use it (tested OK with prboom-plus 2.4.8.2 in Windows XP, at least). One place where it will find it is if you put it in the same place as the exe.

midi is better, provided you were born before 1986, if not, you need to buy a record player A.S.A.P!

But record players and MIDI have nothing to do with each other! :p

Besides, his point was the MIDI music doesn't work. There is a site where you can download the music from just about every DooM game ever released, including the various console ports but I forget the URL. The 3DO port of DooM has surprisingly good music.

Thanks fot the replys. I got it working btw.

For the midi fans DON'T WORRY! : ) I'm writing the original midi files out and MP3ing them : ) Just looking for the right sound atm - dosbox is helpfull here I can tell you. My midi gear (Audigy 2), or even the timidity wavesets are just too "new" for me - doom music has to be SB16 FM or nothing : )

Me likes FM MIDI too. My computer isn't new enough to be able to emulate while I DooM though. Actually, it probably would work if somebody plugged something like Adplug into a port to play it. DOSbox is too bloated for this poor olde lappy and so is VDMSound.

FM FTW!
You can get the Audigy2 to do FM under DOS (have to use some hacked Audigy1 DOS driver).

I solved the problem by building a fast computer. Can do the FM in emulation now. Kinda wish I could do it in a port though. ZDoom's FM emulation fails it.

I was hoping this was a debate between what is better suited for doom, midis or mp3s. My vote would have definitely been midis.

I'd make MP3's (well FLACs really) of the old FM MIDIs but for some reason my old OPL3 soundcard doesn't fit into any of the ISA slots in my "new" P2 computers. I got a SB AWE off of someone for free so I'll give that a try whenever I get any of my old computers working again.

Agreed. I think MP3 detracts from the atmosphere of Doom.
