I'm a newbie on this site - howdy all. *wave*

Has anyone actually installed/ran Doom 3 on Vista?

Yeah, MS is proud of it - that's for sure. Luckily, I've got an MSDN that's paid for.

I've got Vista Ultimate installed on all but one of my machines. I installed Doom 3 and Quake 4 installed at home. Doom 3 works great - I'm just learning the ropes, however. I'm just catchin-up from playing original Doom.

One thing I discovered, is that there is no need to right-click on Doom 3 and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu. Running programs like Visual Studio on Vista requires that you start 'em that way. If you start Doom that way, it seems to cause problems.

Vista doesn't work well enough yet for me to consider using it as anything other than a testbed for my technical support endeavors. :p

I've not ran into any major problems, but I guess it depends on what you use it for. I develop in VS, SQL, Sybase, etc - both client and web. I do have some legacy stuff, in Visual Studio 6/2003 - that I'm leaving on XP.

All-in-all, I'm very surprised at how well Vista has handled everything so far. Some vendors haven't caught-up, of course, but I see them on the horizon, chasing the Vista train...

The Vista OS has spoiled me already - I find myself having to wait on what now seems to be a 'clunky' and '2d' XP. :)

Nice :D sudo doom3 ftw! Seems MS has adopted some really good features.

It seems as though they have. Security is definately tight in Vista, almost to the point of annoyance from notifications. I got past that frustration, however, once I got used to it. :)

I can see myself turning UAC off. I'm on Win2k atm and I like the fact that it doesn't tell me about anything, security or otherwise.

What's this UAC? Isn't it "windows security center" anymore? *cry*

Barbaric, although it does manage to keep some n00bics from clicking things they shouldn't.

Are you on ATM at work/home/both? I don't care much while I'm on a corp intranet - but, it does keep me apprised of what spyware IT is pushing-out.

Any other time, the beefed-up security layer of today's Windows OS is a necessary evil. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy like my WC .45 ACP - I wouldn't leave home without it. If I dont want to deal with security issues, I just hop on my Linux box. :)

You know MS - they change it faster than it takes to learn it. Just like FrontPage, they're tired of the name so they changed it to 'Web Expressions' (even though it took them a while to realize it's had the same name for 10 years). I hope they camp-out on Vista for awhile, so at least one or 2 people can become experts before it's changed again. *zuh*

The 1.31 patch adds Vista compability in case you missed it.

My Vista was shattered by a spate of BSoD. *cry* But it's all set up again + "Earlier Version of Windows" just for Q4/D3 and other misc OpenGL problems. And I also had a recent backup that saved my ass. :)

So it seems some people can't figure out that MS changed "Outlook Express" to "Windows Mail." One guy almost returned a computer today over that until the hardware tech got him talking to me and I pointed out the name change. That was a good laugh. I felt sorry for that tech though. She was trying but she'd clearly never even seen Vista before today. :D

Windows Mail is even WORSE than Outlook Express. Because it can't do BLOODY WEBMAIL ANYMORE!!!

Thanks for the heads up, although I've only seen one person ever use that webmail feature in Outlook Express.

You mean that no users of Outlook Express tried it for accounts like Hotmail? Even though it's a MICROSOFT PRODUCT?! Struth...

Well, I do like RC1 overall, but I do hate some parts:

Pricing: The final RTM version is VERY pricey even though RC1 was about $20 AUD.
DRM: Let's see. A very user-unfriendly technology designed to restrict what can be done with digital stuff.
Compatibility: OpenGL is somewhat problematic. Driver support is OK in x86. But x64 is HORRIBLE.
License-based: Frankly, you should be able to buy a product and not have usage restricted in this way. This sort of thing will probably give Linux the upper-hand.

And a few minor nuisances.

Apps: Some of them are pointless. But there's some great additions like the snipping tool and Media Center (ignoring DRM issues).
Inconsistencies: The UI has many issues with this. But otherwise, it's quite nice.

Otherwise, most of it is great if unoriginal.

Spent several hours hunting down a Vista issue today and didn't find it yet. I bet AOL has a hand in it though.
