I had been given an USB mouse a week or so ago and had noticed immediately upon playing Doom3 that the "mouse 3" button and "mouse wheel up" and "mouse wheel down" do not work all of the time (sometimes they work, sometimes they do not. It seems rather random). Furthermore, these problems do not manifest in Half-Life 2. I have the newest drivers installed for the mouse-- any suggestions?

Indeed I have, as I've had similar problems in the past... twice, because I forgot what I originally did the second time.

Go to mouse settings, and select office 97 compatible scrolling method or similar option. This shouldn't cause any troubles with games and is identical to the other option, or at least I haven't noticed any differences.

Edit: I know what I'm talking about, because I tested it thoroughly the second time I had troubles. However, now I can't find the option myself. I performed a quick search (http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2004/20040629.htm), and it seems that I still haven't become totally nuts.

Doing so (enabling Office 97 scrolling) did not produce any resolution to the problem. I have attempted the installation disc drivers and the drivers from the website. I have contacted the manufacturer to the mouse, but I doubt they will have any suggestions.

What other problems have you had with your mouse? Is it an USB mouse?

I have an USB mouse, and this scrolling business is the only time I've had troubles with it.

If you have a basic 3 button mouse, try uninstalling the drivers and let windows use the basic mouse drivers instead. Right now you could have conflicting drivers.

I can't help you any further. I'm sure you'll find more helpers at Computer forums (http://computerforum.com/) if this doesn't help you.

The uninstallation of the drivers and using default Windows drivers fixed the problem. Now, however, I have lost the five button functions (I have a five button USB mouse). I prefer a mouse 3 button/working scroll wheel in game over the mouse 4 and mouse 5 buttons however, so I suppose we can state the problem is resolved.

Have you tried using a PS/2 adapter? This might get the full functionality back. I don't know, though, as I've never had a similar issue. Just a suggestion. ;)

I don't think those support five buttons, anyway.
