yes, as you all can probably guess, i am STILL looking for a hexen windows port that looks, feels and acts like the original DOS executable.
the only one i can find that I haven't actually gotten to work is UHexen. I got the "timidity patches" the readme keeps rambling on about, but i still get the "Uhexen.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. thats it... without warning, nor a reason why.
I have the Hexen.wad file (v1.1 full) in the same directory of the exe, and i have the timidity patches in the u-hexen\timidity directory.
am i missing something? Are the patches in the wrong directory? I looked at the stdout.txt file and it says "MIDI load failed:timidity.cfg: No such file or directory"... but its THERE, though.
i dont mean to sound like a noob and annoy the hell out of people, but could someone who knows how to set u-hexen up tell me where these files need to be, and how i should start it up? thanks...

Theres also ZDoom and GZdoom, they support Hexen. But jHexen is just as good.

I don't think any of you really understand what I am trying to say.
I am looking for a Hexen port to windows that is just that. Hexen. no more, no less.
I want to test out U-Hexen, so please help me.

If you are looking for a WINDOWS PORT for Hexen, that is ZDoom and jHexen. They are Hexen, no more, no less. These ports do not add/subtract anything from the game. You can use old controls, set 320x240 screen resolution, everything. It is still the same old Hexen, you will not benefit or lose out on anything using one of these ports. ZDoom is best bet for what you are aiming for, as by sounds of it you dont want all the extra stuff jHexen offers.
You'll be having a very hard time finding a port that is just Hexen support. I did look for you but all I found was a bunch of forums saying use jHexen or ZDoom. Just download ZDoom, set the resolution to 320x240 and save yourself a lot of time you dont need to waste. To your criteria thats what it is, ZDoom playing Hexen is just that, no more, no less.
Or wait around to see if Chocolate Doom will one day support Hexen (port that tries to emulate DOS doom as best as possible).

I am looking for a Hexen port to windows that is just that. Hexen. no more, no less.I don't know of any (and I'd surely have heard if there were a stable Win32 port that had demo compatibility with original Hexen), though you could try Hexen itself and run it in Dosbox. If your system is reasonably powerful, you should get acceptable performance (try the -auto setting - cycles=auto in dosbox.conf).

I've now tried out uhexen, and found that it worked OK in XP (SP1) if I did the following:
Replaced the SDL files supplied with up-to-date ones. I just grabbed those in the current prboom-plus (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=148658&package_id=164412&release_id=447888), though you could get them from many other places, notably http://www.libsdl.org
Set the compatibility mode for uhexen.exe to Windows 98 / Windows MeI didn't bother with the music, but you could try doing this and see if it helps solve your problem. But how faithful uhexen is to the original, I cannot easily say. Just because a port is old, doesn't mean it hasn't changed things!

You're welcome. As a general tip, with any application that uses SDL files, if you're having problems, try using newer or older versions of the SDL files, and see if this helps.
