View Full Version : Musical Preferences

I personally enjoy listening to only two kinds of music. Classical (( Yes, I like Bach. )), and "old Rock" (( I.E. RUSH, Queen, Journey, Styx, Police, etc. )). I think the new "rock" is crap and an insult to the name it holds. Can't stand it at all, despite what anyone in my age group says.

Those are my preferences, what are yours?

I also listen to classical. I disagree with your statement about new "rock" though.
You are generalising a very big genre. I think nowadays radio stations slap the label "rock" on to just about everything and therein lies the problem and people's perception of what rock is ... like, Tatu is a rockband - I mean come on.

I listen to a wide range of music, from classical to System to Live to even Blackmore's Night. Obviously there are some real oldies as well, like Leonard Cohen and a lot of older 60's music. I also have a soft spot for Diana Krall ( but I think that's more to do with her looks than with the music). :p

I guess it differs from day to day, mood to mood and emotion to emotion. I find myself always going back to one band though. +LIVE+. uhm - their older stuff anyway, the new stuff sucks.

Regards.

I meant mostly Punk rock and all the kids who learn how to strum a few chords on a guitar or play a song or two on a drum and throw random words together into a song just to try and make money with that crap.

I agree. For example Green Day is WAY over rated. I had a friend in 5th grade that bought a guitar. He learned how to play one song (don't know what). So then, he wanted to buy a $1,400 guitar for himself, and a [big price] drum set for his girlfriend. Then they planed to go on the streets and play for cash. Never worked out. He was 11 LoL.

Why do people only listen to certain things and don't seem to be willing to stray very far from what seems a narrow slice of the big musical pie? If you don't like a particular band or a certain type of music then it doesn't mean that band or music genre is garbage, it just means you don't like it. There's a good chance that many other people like what you dislike or hate for that matter. That's just my opinion tho.

How can Greenday be considered over-rated because 2 amateur 5th graders tried to play one of Greenday's songs and failed? That's crazy. I wouldn't want to hear any 5th graders playing anything at all on the street corner... even if they didn't suck. Chances are it would sound like garbage trucks mating. Now that would be overated if you could rate it. hah.

My musical preferences? I like everything that sounds good. :D

One persons music is anouther's noise or vice versa.... haha

i like anything done good. well written, well performed, well recorded. if it's both good music and it moves me, i like it. rock, metal, blues, jazz, classical, dance, soundtrack, opera, electronica, even some country. most of the time i'm in the mood for something heavy and intense that i can work out to or get pumped up to. keeps me going through the week.

I'm really into metal, all kinds. Thrash, melodeath, power, speed, etc. I love older bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden also. There are metal songs I listen to for any emotion and situation.

But I also like old-school hip-hop. A bit of a stretch, but I think the old stuff by guys like Warren G and Tupac is really awesome. :D

I agree STRONGLY with you guys. Especially kelthan. I like Classical, Weather Channel Music, bon type music, synthesized kind of stuff (Bejeweled 2), progressive metal stuff (symphony X / yngwie malmsteen), medatative ambient stuff (mystical sun), and Buckethead, and as long as it's good. I really like the classical metal stuff. Symphony X i like more than dream theater thats for sure. And Bass pure bass music. Classical is awesome yeah...

I just hate the things kids listen too, UGHHHH........

Nice thread And YES

you need to eat the whole musical pie. And everything that sounds good.

One thing that I can't stand is when people look down upon the cello as a strictly classical silly instrument and the most un-whatever thing in the world. trust me you can produce some good stuff with it

Muscle Chris
July 29th, 2006, 01:20 AM
LOL what is weather channel music?

haven't played bejeweled 2 but klax is prolly the most intense synth stuff you'll ever hear

symphony x is awesome, if you like that try this album underworld from adagio, i like it better than most of the x

dunno what's wrong with cello but ive heard all weird stuff in metal or electronics or any cross-genre really, there's a german heavy metal band that has a fulltime bagpipe player and another black metal one with an accordian player too, its all good

For weather channel music, listen to Del Sol by Dave Samuels. Mp3.com has some good previews of del sol. Jamboree is the most weather channelish music I could find. The others are good too.

Buckethead is just plain crazy. Or colma is calm in Buckethead

Have you ever heard of peter maunu? OR elliot sharp?

That Underworld album is really good too, sounds just like symphony X. Cool classic piano in next profundis MY GOODNESS it sounds like symphony x. BTW, what albums have you listened to by the X?

My musical taste is very selective. I don't much care about the genre of the music, but there are some stuff I can't stand. Pop, rap, techno and such are totally hideous to my ears.

Also, even though I like heavy, rock, blues and jazz pretty much, my selection of artists and songs is really narrow there too. I'm a picky listener. Only the best are good enough. Mostly I listen to pre 80's stuff, not counting some exceptions.

BTW, what albums have you listened to by the X?yea that's why i liked it. i've heard v the most, but odyssey and divine wings of tragedy i remember a bit about too. havent listened in a while. x sounded like they were trying to be professional, adagio sounded like they were just having fun and doin a good job of it. that's why i went with adagio. don't like the new adagio much tho, imo underworld's the best

afaik kamelot's a similar band, shorter songs tho, i dig epica. i think that's a band too LOL

I like a little Jazz, and Electronica too. But not really enough to pick out any favorite artists.cool i got a lot of that.

zyklon's first is intense, i dig the industrial stuff like in track5, i don't usually like electronics in metal but they mix it up good. omc was good since ill-natured. gene hoglan = RULE! borknagar, best i liked was archaic course, middle tracks were a blast! new dimmu's half n half, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 i like, older stuff i just never got into for whatever reason. i'm also like the only person who thinks burning bridges is arch enemy's best. that new girl is wild but she was really sloppy on wages of sin, anthems was kinda boring, haven't heard doomsday machine. and LOL dying fetus was a jr high classic, some skater found it and like half the school was listening to it, it was the one thing that bridged all social group gaps. "DYING FETUS!! grrrrrr!" haven't listened to sepultura since cavalera left. buddy tells me the new one is spiff. dunno, don't care. now nightwish i just got into, once is freakin swank. and hey if you like warmen, listen to star tales by dol ammad. same idea but way better more consistent and they have like 13 singers.

I also think Burning Bridges was Arch Enemy's best. I listen to metal (filthiest (goregrind) to frilliest (Haggard [best classical metal EVER])), dark ambient, martial industrial, other random electronic stuff (EBM, psytrance), neoclassical, some post-rock, a little noise.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Tarantula Hawk, Nasum, Deathspell Omega, Judas Iscariot, and Merzbow.

My .MP3 collection has a little of everything from Frank Sinatra to Marilyn Manson. But more than any my fav types of music are Classic Rock and Blues. It's the guitar more than anything. I always wished I could play one.

I have too many fav bands/artists to list, so for only a few:
Led Zeppelin
The Rolling Stones
ZZ Top
Muddy Waters
B.B. King
Soundgarden (not Classic Rock though)
The Who
Black Sabbath
Wille Dixon
Johnny Cash (not Rock or Blues either)
Pink Floyd
...and some more....

I actually found a thrift store that used to be a record shop, they have a gaint archive of records left over in the dingy basement that nobody knows about, 2 LP's for a buck. Fucking gold. I know where I am going to spend my free time.

Alice in Chains - Probably my favorite band of all time, badass grunge rock, and the versatility to take it to beautiful experimental directions. Cantrell is a genius, Staley sold it, though.
Elliot Smith - Flat out some of the most beautiful singing and guitar work I've ever heard. Quite a powerful lyricist, too. Absolutely necessary.
Bush - I'll probably get berated for this one, but I honestly enjoy Gavin's pop grunge. It's a guilty pleasure with Bush's status as chick rock (kinda like 'The Nickelback of Ten Years Ago')... not all material is solid, but got to give kudos for the massive hits and the better, subtler stuff that never made the radio. Not exactly original, but mostly done right in my opinion. Listen to Razorblade Suitcase.
Candlebox - A blip on the grunge map, none the less had an awesome band. Fizzled out later on with softer indulgences.
Radiohead - So, so, so so so much better than Creep. The Bends and Hail To The Thief are my favs.
A Perfect Circle
Shinedown
White Stripes
etc.
etc.

etc.
etc.

folk metal?? don't think i've heard of that. What bands play it?folk metal in general describes any metal band that includes folkish instruments (flutes, harmonica. chanting as well). (also, some bands that play just with modern instruments but with mythological themes/lyrics are sometimes call folk.). so usually while a band can be described as folk metal, they also will fall under another of metal's genres (however, because of black metal's connection to ancient scandinavian myth, the vast majority of folk metal bands are black metal).

some folk metal bands:
Ensiferum (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=332)
Falkenbach (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=1071)
Finntroll (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=95)

You guys are class.

If you love a good guitar solo (and who the hell doesn't) I have a strong recommendation. Stroll over to the "world music" section and pick up a CD called, "Three Ragas" by Ravi Shankar. The case is orange and beige. Listen to the longest track, a half-hour sitar solo, called "Raga Jog", and be sure to crank it up. All his stuff is fantastic, and this particular recording is mindblowing.

I'm also finding that Persian music can be extremely badass.

I'm also finding that Persian music can be extremely badass.

Persian and Indian music (or, more accurately, the Raga scales) has become a staple for heavy metal. To western ears, it gives a very discordant feel, and truly does sound badass. Testament is a great example.

Eird-Way

I'll have to check them out. I've never gotten too deep into heavy metal, aside from early Metallica and Apocalyptica, but I do freaking love it.

Harmony is a universal language - don't get me started, because I'll never stop.

Indian music uses scales that can be approximated in our harmonic system, although they divide the "octave" into 22 ill-defined intervals instead of 12 equal, logarhythmic ones.

Persian music doesn't even necessarily contain octaves. They use an interval fairly close but it's WAY flat. They use 25 unequal intervals (only 8 or fewer at a time, of course, just like us and India), the most unique of which are the "neutral" intervals. They're partway between what we would call "major" and "minor". It gives the music a crazy, shimmering feel. Arab music (also awesome) is based on a closely-related system, but it seems to tend more toward what we would call "minor" modes.

I just ordered a Persian setar on ebay, and I'm pretty psyched about what I'm going to do with 25 movable frets.

I like a rather various assortment of music. I like some of the "weird" 70's/early 80's stuff, like Pink Floyd and Siouxie and the Banshees. I like 80's metal from very early iron Maiden to much later Metallica and Pantera. I like some 80's/90s Industrial like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. I like all ages goth like Bauhaus through to the Cruxshadows. I like some black/death metal like Emperor and Crandle of Filth. I lith some mid-80s through late 90s Alternative like REM and Smashing Pumpkins. I like some Punk, like the Adicts. I like some nu-metal like KoRn.

I like a lot of stuff.

Pop is my favourite music genre. When I say 'Pop' I'm refering to Johnny Hates Jazz, Culture Club, A-Ha, Yazoo and Tears For Fears. Rock is brilliant as well. Older rock greats like The Police, The Clash and Led Zeppelin. Hell, Prince is great in his own right as well.
