You know, that sounds extremely familiar for some reason... :p
First. XWE (http://www.doomworld.com/xwe). Good for all your lump management needs.
Then load the song (which has to be either a MUS or MIDI unless you're using a sourceport, in which case I will elaborate on the subject), and rename it to the lumpname used for the map you're playing; with Ultimate Doom this is rather simple, it's just D_ExMy, where x/y is the episode/map (though this will not work for ep. 4 for Ult. Doom because they didn't add new songs for it).
However most likely you will be using Doom 2, I imagine, and for that they went all nonsensical and gave them names instead of map numbers (i.e., MAP01's song is D_RUNNIN, MAP02 is D_STALKS, etc). For that ye'll need to figure out which one is which.

oh haha very funny =P
I'll be using DooM][ of course. But where would i save the song after i've renamed it? or does it replace the old file?
and where do i get MIDI files? is it from windows media player or iTunes or something?

you can find them all over the internet (iTunes only uses mp3). Try Wav World, Midi World, Midi.com, Videogame Music Archive. Just search Midi Files on any search engine.
For the names, here (http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Doom_II_music)s a list

First backup your wad you'v been working on just to play it safe. This is a good habit to get into because you never know when to expect the unexpected. some call it paranoia, some call it smart. you be the judge heh
Google search midi. or metal midis. should definitely find something. -unless someone is randomly unplugging your lan cable.
Anyways, Once you get the .mid file you like..
Open your pwad in Xwe and goto Entry > Load, and load the midi music. After loaded, Right click on the midi entry in the list to the left, and select Rename Entry.
The name of the midi entry depends on what level# your map is, so for example If your level is map01 then the entry name needs to be D_RUNNIN
After you rename it, goto File > Clean up. -clean up is optional but useful.
Close Xwe and run your pwad !

XWE does that too, you just need to have MUS2MIDI installed.

But it exports them as .lmp files for some reason.

I'm pretty sure you can just rename those.
You can search for MIDI files over at www.musicrobot.com and it's great except half the sites it indexes have been dead since 1999 or something. :D

Yep, XWE exports the music in what ever format it is (i.e ogg, midi, mus etc), but it always gives it a .lmp extension which you have to change.

Zdoom and its derivatives support mp3, ogg, flac, etc (whatever FMOD does), and even SPC if you want to do some throw some SNES music in there. Of course file size becomes an issue with those.
