[Non Support Issue] Help with WADs !

Hi
Can someone explain to me the basic differences between IWADs and PWADs and how I can tell which are which and how I know which ones to load.
Also why do some WADs need Doom2.wad to be present to play even though they dont much resemble Doom, and others (Batman.wad) can run independently. And other games require more than one WAD.

I always assumed a WAD file contained everything needed for that game.

iwad = main wads ie doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, hexen.wad and heretic.wad
pwads= addon wads (mods), like reqiuem.wad and hr.wad etc
i think the games that need more than one wad to play need new textures and sprites added that are stored on the other wads. like for new enemies and weapons.
