Last I recall, it was the marine's pet. But I didn't pay close enough attention to the story to find out the deal on it. I think the marine swears revenge for them killing it or something.

Yes. The bunny is the marine's pet, and is named "Daisy".

But he returned to earth only to find out that his true love was brutally cut in half.

I strongly believe the fella from E4's final screen is just a damned former sergeant who took the bunny trophy, not Marine.

They're talking about the bunny covered in blood that gets displayed at the end of Episode 4, Thy Flesh Consumed.
As for the avatar thing: Control panel->edit avatar->scroll to bottom? You've got 150 so it should be there. If it isn't PM Phoebus about it...

I don't know about Thy Flesh Consumed, I've never bothered to properly play it through because I find it boring, but at the end of Inferno there's a picture of the marine holding the head of the rabbit by its ears.

Ummm... No there isn't. At the end of Episode 3 (Inferno) the marine steps through a portal back to earth and see's a rabbit on the ground. The picture then scrolls and you see another rabbit head on a spike. There's no marine holding the bunny ears that I can see (maybe I'll look again, this time with the 3D glasses *wacky* )

Yes there is. At the end of E4, the marine's at the same scene as the end of E3, except that time rather than showing a bunny's head impaled on a stick, it shows him holding the bunny's head by the ears.
I was thinking of Ep.3 when I posted before, but since there's one at the end of Thy Flesh Consumed anyway I'm still not wrong so. :p

this seems to be confusing some.
ok: wehn you beat episode 3:inferno, it shows a picture of bunnies in a filed, and then it shows a bunnies head on a spike.
now, what some people dont know is that thy flesh consumed is supposed to be the marines journey home through the last part of hell, i mean, you didnt think it would be so easy for him to leave when theres a bunch of demons that would be trying to stop him.
anyways, at the end of episode4:thy flesh consumed, the marine returns to earth, only to find that some demons followed him through, and then i believe it says "youll make them pay for killing you pet daisy" or something like that.
I hope this clears some things up

Whoops, my photo memory didn't work this time. Yeah, it's impaled on a stick at the end of episode 3 and held by ears at the end of fourth.

Yes there is. At the end of E4
I've never really bothered to play to the end of Episode 4, didn't really like it. Wikipedia says John made E4M2 in 6 hours flat, and I have to say it looks it too. *owell*
What people have got to remember is that the first 3 episodes came out, then doom 2 came out, then episode 4. So at the end of episode 3 he gets back to earth in time for doom 2, even though in episode 4 he's not made it back yet. I assume from that, that episode 4 wasn't even planned until after doom 2 came out.
