View Full Version : Scariest Doom level....

Which level (or levels) scared the hell out of you, the first time you played?

I'm talking about the original, vanilla Doom, not Doom 2, console versions or any mods or custom levels. Once you've selected your choice, you can describe your scariest moment in any game (not just Doom) if you like. (I just find such things interesting lol)

For me it was definitely E3M2 'Slough of Despair', I remember playing through it in 1996, shortly after upgrading to the full game, and feeling really uneasy. The whole area has a nightmarish, hellish, unearthly feel to it, plus the fact that ammo is tight, and every shot has to count. There's too many dark corners, with Spectres and Cacos lurking inside, ready to pounce; and I distinctly remember engaging all the Cacos when you reach the blue pillar with the skull switches, near the area when you get the key, and crying out in panic when I found myself being eaten by the Spectres, that had crept silenty out from the hidden area that opens behind you when you hit the switch, and not knowing where the attack was coming from.

I still find it quite a rush to play that level now, even now so many years later, in JDoom with all the model packs and textures etc.

Joint second scariest moments: The really dark room (more Spectres) at the end of E1M5 'Phobos Lab' terrified me when playing the shareware levels, I used to find myself spamming bullets with the chaingun in every direction out of sheer panic.

The 'halls' part of 'E2M6: Halls of the Damned''. More dark, creepy areas (the music makes it worse somehow) and a damned Baron in your face, within a dark, enclosed area (when you play on Ultraviolence).

Scariest gaming moments ever (any game) :

Zerstorer Testament of the Destroyer (Quake 1 partial mod). The second level is set in a graveyard, and the sheer horror of it is indescribable...you'd have to play it to understand.

Half Life 2 'We Don't Go to Ravenhome': enough said!

Quake E4M4 'The Palace of Hate': God that freaked me out when I first played it....it still does!!

Half Life 1 'Gonarch's Lair'. I panicked like hell when that bellowing monstrousity started charging me, and knocking me around, despite it's somewhat comical design.

Doom never scared me, although I was afraid of Demons when I was a kid.

Here are other scares though.
Doom ][ Map 03: Near the end, there are some demos going amok on a ledge, and there's a teleporter near them, I was always afraid they would teleport next to me.

episode2-map?, dunno off hand the level, but it has an inverted cross on the wall. remember taking a left down a hallway then all of a sudden, i heard all soughts of demon hordes, barking and growling, now that was scary. btw i still get scared playing Doom, Kill-me, and Vengeance wads just a couple of i can think of right now has quite of lot of scary in your face when you least expect it moments :)

halls of the damned, the containment area (creepy warehouse), icon of sin (big devil face) but it just makes you jump in the beginning.

Chex Quest was far scarier than doom though. Believe it or not, it was for me. :D

E1M5 on the PLAYSTATION VERSION. (Okay, I know you said Vanilla DooM, but I didn't play the original DooM until long after DooM 2, which I got when it was quite new, and when I finally did get to play DooM 1 for the first time it was the Playstation version)

OH MY GOD.

First time playing DooM 1. The PSX version has a lot of changes, even in 'I'm too young to die' mode. Obviously you're already scared whilst playing it, particularly when the PSX version has the far more evil sounds and ambient music, and the different lighting.

But that level on the PSX version, there are spectres where there just shouldn't be spectres, but then things get out of hand. Just entering that final room for the first time, with the pulsating light - the light pulsates about half the speed at which it does on the PC version, leaving very little time when you can see and a long time in blackness, and it's FULL OF DAMN SPECTRES! Enemies you can hardly see anyway, in that pitch dark maze! I was absolutely bricking it. Then - I'm on I'm Too Young To Die mode here remember - I finally see the exit door - it's illuminated with a red glow so you can still see it even in the dark - I'm relieved, I open it, the room behind it is basked in red, and a freaking pinky demon jumps right out at me! On I'm Too Young To Die difficulty! By the end of that level I was actually shaking!

MAP28: The Spirit World, this level has probably the most Hellish setting in Doom II, the music was also horrifying. The whole setting level just scared me when I played it at a younger age. It was the level that was most similar to a hellhole.

I must admit I'm playing the game on the PC using the PSX soundtrack, as it adds much more atmosphere than the original midi score.

Spectres in a dark area are always bad news, and I know what you mean about the Pinky waiting for you in the final room; the scare factor comes from the fact that you are in a situation in which you are given a sense of final relief "it was horrible, but it's all over now", which is then promptly shattered.

The Spirit World is actually a Doom II map, but I'll allow it, as it's one of my favourite levels. There's a nice balance between gameplay, atmosphere and skill - and even for experienced players, it's difficult to completely own the level. I can blast through most of Doom II on Ultraviolence with little trouble, but The Spirit World always bruises me a little.

I sometimes use the atmospheric Hexen soundtrack when I play Doom sometimes, gives it a relaxing but very atmospheric feeling.

ROCK ON, ZERSTORER! That campaign messed me up so bad. That was definitely my scariest FPS experience ever. I think I might now be unable to bear children after escaping from the temple of the Sanguinoch. God damn, that hasn't left my hard drive in all these years (in thems days, if you deleted a good mod, you might never find it again).

For me, it's a tie between Unholy Cathedral and Mt. Erebus. What makes DOOM truly nightmarish for me in a way that no modern game can, is this feeling: There's a bad thing here trying to get me, and I can't fight it, so I run away and stumble onto another bad thing and run away and there's something bad everywhere I try to hide. It's that hellish sensation of panic, being trapped, trying to run and finding nowhere.

Now, go ahead and read some REVIEWS (http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=29749), then DISCUSS (http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=29750) about them, and lastly VOTE (http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=29756) on how did you like them

That one KDITD level where there's the flickering lights and you go through a maze of computer equipment right before the exit. That level scared the crap out of me before I learned where to find lite-amp goggles.

Yeah, and my NDCP2 map has one good moment: You start out in a conference room (this is an office building), and step through a door. You look around at the cubicle farm in which you find yourself, and walk forward to where the chaingun is. The lights suddenly go off, and you hear a door open and an evil growl...

Hey, good to meet another Zerstorer fan. Like you I've lived with it for a long time, and it's one of those experiences that really does haunt you for ever. I'm currently experimenting with it using the new(ish) Quake Tremor source port, with all the QMB particles, texture pack and high res monster skins. It makes the modded weapons and new enemies (Nemesant etc.) look a little basic in comparison, but nothing can compare with the atmosphere of that game, even after all these years. My only near parallel experience was playing the HL2 Ravenholme level for the first time...but even that get's pretty easy and linear once you've done it a couple of times and know where everything is.

Mt Erebus is actually my favourite Doom 1 level, but it was more as a result of the generally open ended, wide-area nature of it, that encourages you to explore all those buildings and hidden places. I never found it a particularly scary level, but I suspect that this is as a result of the scale of the place...the fact that you can see enemies coming from a long way off, and consequently react to them in plenty of time. Certainly the large numbers of Cacos that pour out (in Ultraviolence skill) from those exposed rooms can be quite a challenge, if you are fairly new to the game...but now I just find it great fun!

I've never really enjoyed Unholy Catherdral all that much, though I'm not sure why...I'm just always glad to get it over with and progress to the next level.

The slithering zombies in the beginning of the Nuclear Plant are scary and the music is giving some nice spooky atmosphere. The dark blinky "secret" maze is scary too... but there should have been some spectral demons in the maze or more imps.

When there's an archvile in the level, it's awake somewhere, but you don't know where... and then suddenly it's right in front of you!

Just E1M8. After that, everything was a piece of cake.

that one freaked me out

Ultimate Doom:
e1m5
e1m8
e4m1

Doom 2:
Map02 Underhalls
Map (forgot, but the level is called Bloodfalls)
Map (forgot this one too, called Chasm)
map28 Spirit World
Map29
Map30

map30 freaked me out at first when i was little because these little skull things went flying and stuff creating monsters, never knew how to kill it except putting on idclip, until like a year ago, i started playing again when my sister made me install it, and found out i had to use the elevator thingy, was easy after that since i found out about strafeing and running

Doom 1/2 and the wads I played never scared me... not even a little bit.

The closest Doom that scared the hell out of me is Doom 64, which is an amasing title.

That level has a maze? I don't remember that part. *confused*

As for DooM:

The mazes in E1M2 and E1M4 were scary the first time. Meeting demons in the dark is frightening as is fighting in the pulsating computer maze.

In other games:

Duke3D is creepy in E2M4 at night in the dark.
Nova Prospekt in HL2 was just creepy. (Ravenholm wasn't that scary)
Blast Pit in Half-life was scary
The first Uber-Soldat in RTCW
Pretty much all of the first AvP
The part of DooM III where you're in the Delta Labs listening to the rantings of the insane marines was scary too. :D

I have'ent played the original doom.however, the final level in the 32X Doom creeped me out a little bit.it was like:''taking out cacos, taking out cacos, taking out--Holy Crud! that pink minotaur is shooting at me!oh crud it's chaseing me!!
Other games:
Chex Quest:the final level of CQ2 creeped me out the most with it's dark sewers and Maximuses at the end.
Clock Tower:the SNES version that was only released in Japan but i got a translatied ROM of it.when Barry Borrows first came and you see one of your friends dead in the shower(with a dress on mind you.).....*shivers..*
Quake:not so much as creeped me out,as it just kept me at my toes.

ahem...ok...cold shower....I agree about Nova Prospeck, in that the parts with the Bull Antlion are truly horrific, I remember beling low on heavy ammo and down to the magnum during the encounter with the second one, I was thinking 'six shots...then what happens?'.

Heretic did scare the shit out of me when I was like 8, trying to fix the sound on the game by configuring in the classic "setup.exe" and i had the volume turned up all the way, VERY LOUD, and when I loaded up the game, the title music of the Shadow of the Serpent Riders edition blasted in my face, scaring the shit out of me.

The last levels of Doom II were quite scary, MAP28 and MAP30, very creepy music and even creepier backgrounds.

The only thing that really constantly scares me in doom is being in a dark room and then suddenly being bit by a demon you cant see real well, when you thought the room was empty.

When I was littlier, map30 song kinda scared me.

Half Life 1 'Gonarch's Lair'. I panicked like hell when that bellowing monstrousity started charging me, and knocking me around, despite it's somewhat comical design.

offtopic: Scary half-life moment.
A couple of levels in when you first run into those monsters that hang from the ceiling with there tongues hanging down, i thought they were maybe ropes that you had to use to get across the lake, so when I went to grab one it stated to pull me up, am thinking wtf, then i look up to see that thing sucking up its tongue, omg it freaked me out so bad. I didn't play half life for like a week afterwords.*roflmao*

And he shows up in the first level of TNT which is really hard if the port doesn't spawn multiplayer weapons in coop.

You're not kidding.

I remember dozens of early custom levels that used to put a Cyberdemon around every feking corner, and have rooms with 12 or more of them alongside a few Spider Masterminds crammed into large, bland open rooms. They were about as fun to play as a case of amoebic dysentry.

I remember battling him in Coop on that first TNT level as well, we'd all keep constantly dying, then respawning....getting off a couple of shots....die...repeat :D That was actually fun.

Is bumping old topics with non-spam posts allowed?, 'cause i see many bumps, oh well.

Doom only scared me 3 times, in E3M3 (House Of Pain), because i felt an unsecure feeling, kinda like ''Dam dam dam where the hell is the exit?!'' this just scared me because i just had seen ''The Ring'' movie, thinking that Samantha would appear anywhere. And when i saw that freaking Baron Of Hell in that mini pool of lava...GOD i jumped!

Also in Doom 2, Map 08, i open one door, get the computer map, and then trying to get any secrets (pressing the use button on the front wall), i hear a horrible growl, i turn back and the goddam Pinkie, i was like ''OMFG A BULL!''.

And the last one was in Halls of the dammed in the white corridors, actually the stage nor the music scared me, the only thing was that i had left www.doom3.com open, and the intro music (that you can't stop unless you close the page), THAT was scary, i almost thought it was the Stage's music!

I would have to say E1M5's music. That just set the whole mood for the whole level. I still love that music to this day.

The 1st time I saw a Demon was a jumpish moment for me, just because right when I went up that elevator.....I heard that barkish growl and saw it for the 1st time. I jumped and blasted with my shotgun over and over and was amazed at how many it took.

Plus other times in PS DOOM because the lighting and whatnot, plus American McGee's ( I believe that was him ) level designs that would include things like you hit a switch that opens the door in front of you, and the door behind you also ( that you don't realize ) and then decide to turn around and BAM.

Episode 2 always gave me an uneasy impression. Level 1 has THREE cacodemons already, level 4 feels gloomier and gloomier as I progress, level 5 just feels complex, level 6 you know what, and level 7 looks like a steady preparator for the final showdown, Confruntation with the Death. And last but not least, level 9.

I think episode 2 meant the peak of id's Doom design inspiration.

well, out of the original doom, the tower of babel. im not sure which one it was. i was 4 at the time, already afraid of doom, but that first encounter with the cyberdemon scared the hell out of me. i usually watched my dad play at that time but every once in a while i would play. the fact that he could be anywhere scared me, but that noise he made when he walked scared me even more.

i never played doom2.

for final doom, i was scared alot. but one of the levels that got me mas plutonia, map 11,hunted. it was a labyrinth, not just a bunch of hallways. but an outdoor labyrinth. i kept getting lost and the only demons in the level were 10 archviles. so i would be walking along and then i would see the flame on my screen and then the archvile would kill me. plus the music scred the hell out of me the most out of that level.

for doom 64, i dont know what level it was, but it had a wierd song that had some wierd voice saying some creepy chant, that scared the hell out of me, and i was 12, when i played it. pretty sad considering im 14 now. also, the last level, absolution scared me. there were so many demons. kind of like the icon of sin except they evntually stopped. but when they were all dead, the motherdemon came out, her shriek scared me.

for doom3 and doom3roe, well, the first one was scary, but by RoE, i was over it. especially those damn imps. there were plenty of times when i would go up to a window or a wall and an imp jumped out of nowhere, especially the instance with a security cabinet.

other games: quake 2- there was a level where they were keeping prisoners and one was screaming like a lamb, constantly, because he was being electricuted or something. that scared me.

quake1- the first boss, the one where he comes out of the pit of lava and then you have to run around the upper level hitting the switches to lower the lightning generator around heim and then shhoting it.

condemned criminal origins- that game was so dark, and things fell and moved for no reason, and plus the detail was too good. one time i opened a locker and a girl, who looked like samara from the ring, jumped out of the locker. that scared the ****ing hell out of me.

well, thats all the games i ever found scary that i played.

I was only 2 or 3 when I first played doom! My dad had only DooM 2 for his PC, and I would watch him, always in the dark! You can imagine what a dark game like that would seem like to a 2-3 year old!

Unfortuntely, The PC was damaged and we lost Doom 2 for ages! The most scary thing in the original DooM (on the PS1 version, never had the PC version until today!) was the hell levels! The music was so terrifying with those levels! I was jumpier than a person after 50 cups of coffee!

Other experiences was the "We don't go to Ravenholm" Episode in Half Life 2! If you have played it, you would know!

Resident Evil games still freak me out a bit!

me too. when i played at 4 always died, so usually i played on no monsters, because i couldnt play without dying. so when i was about that age i would sit and watch my dad play. except i missed alot of the good stuff then, like the end of episode 1 in doom when you fight the two barons of hell. i ran as soon as he got to them, during the day. that game scared the shit out of me.

I watched my dad when I was 3, too! DooM II was my first game EVER! Anyhoo, this one level in DooM II freaks me out... one of the first ones... the one with the underground sewer thingy.

Doom was also my very first game as well! My dad must have really sucked at it because that game taught me how to read (he bought the strategy guide and I was very interested in it because of pics and, after all, was my favourite game at the time! ;D

I bought my first PC in 1994 purely to play the shareware version Doom. It was a 386/33 with 2 MB of memory and a 110 MB hard drive, which back then, was state of the art. *smirk*

Heh, my dad had about the same amount in his! I was 2/3 at the time and now look at todays technology! It's amazing how time flies!

Another scary in doom is when you put on the PSX sounds in Doomsday, and play any hell levels! Play it with surround sound on high, dim the lights, lock the door, and start screaming like mad! *diablo* *diablo* *diablo* *evilol* *evilol* *evilol*

well the one classic doom that freaked me out the most was Doom2. The first time I played map 30, it was 3 AM and I didn't know there was going to be a huge boss so I grabbed the weapons thinking "Oh how generous of them". Walked through the teleporter, not even noticing the boss, then the awful voice and the screams of people... I think I lost my innocence that day. Oh and map 32 (Grosse secret) freaked me out when the cyberdemon came out from behind the door. Good times, good times...

Inferno's levels were kinda boring, i mean it was just hard puzzles, the only good things were, duh, the monsters, and i really liked SM's roar, although it was easy to beat it with the BFG, i only liked the last level though, because there weren't those kinds of freaking boring puzzles, my friend said it was like a math class.

I havent seen TNT yet, an error says i installed it wrong, but i can still play Plutonia, Well, off to reinstalling.

Puzzles in doom?

Are we talking about the game that was released in 1993?

no maps scared me, the only scary things were surprise attacks by unexpected monsters, sometimes i jump from that. but i think some could be scary or like moody, like e1m5, e1m7, e2m2, e2m5, e2m6, e3m7, big dark areas with quite music playing cause loud monster attacks from the soft background make you jump

The bits that make me jump nowadays is the fact that the monsters pursue you (even after all this time of playing it: sometimes they can still catch me off guard!). And when it comes to maze-like levels for example: E3M2 or the bit at the end of E2M3, and you've got multiple enemies around you it really gets ya feeling paranoid!

@Fatal - I think by "puzzles" he means the bits like that switch room in E3M4 (the 2 columns each with 4 switches, and you have to press the correct ones in order to open doors etc). Now that i think about it, a lot of the Hell levels did in fact have a lot of those kind of "puzzles"

Bah, those were totally silly. Four of the buttons open the doors needed to continue, and the other four close the very same doors. No puzzle there.

i think that "ForeverHood" is gonna be very creepy, or scary in that creepy way. his artwork should serve the game well.

What i meant with ''puzzles'' is for example, i think in e3m5 or e3m6 (AKA where there is a room with lots of anti radiactive suits to go into a friggin long maze with like 2 ways and some are connected, the other stage was when you had to find a single switch for some kind of door open behind a collum, which is surrounded by lava (blood?), then it was difficult to remember the switch/door/teleport thing that make you go to a certain part of out like 21 different teleport destination areas, so it was kinda annoying, luckily i wrote them on a note <3.

I must agree with the first post; In Half-Life 2 "We Don't Go To Ravenholm" is the scariest level (almost crapped myself multiple times) but Father Grigory pwns.

Lol, I was never scared of doom (except sometimes I jumped when I was killed in the back when I was starting to play but except that no)

But I have to say I started playing at 10~11 so I was already enough grown up to not be affraid of cacodemons and icon of sin :p

One of mine isn't on Doom or Doom II, but from Final Doom. It's from the Plutonia levels, and it's called "Hunted". I've never had to face so many Arch-Viles in all my life. *what*

While on the subject of Final Doom, "Go 2 It" is just as freaky (when you're not looking so good in the weapons/health/armour department)...
