MAINANTANCE COMPLEX just didn't seems a great as the score made it out to be IMO.

Unfortunately I don't see anything I want to try. The Vile thing sounded ok until I read about the end battle. I like fighting a few viles but that sounds insane. Mr-Rocket looks to have the best map in the lot, but I don't deathmatch.

That´s what discussions are for :). Personally, I enjoyed that long ride a lot: it packed a lot of monsters, action, puzzling and wandering around. These are things that I enjoy but I´m sure that there are people out there that may like their maps shorter, with different battles... Anything. Just to start discussing something PumkinSmasher, what was what you didn´t like about the map and the score you´d give to it?.

Parts of the map are very cramped, and some just end in a dead end, having to turn around seeing another small room opened up. And it got annoying quite fast. I found myself not sure where to go next, and retracing my steps. The map just didn't appeal to me, and i got tired of playing it very quickly. I did not finish the map because it just wasn't fun to me. I would have given it a 4 or 5. The author did put a lot of effort into it, but it just didn't quite achieve the status of good.

As said in some other thread, I assume it´s all a matter of tastes. I liked a lot to wander around the place figuring out what to do next and never found myself having to backtrack much to find the right away. I don´t know, it´s not a typical Doom map, requires effort and dedication to get through it and win.

Exactly, I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, i'm just saying my opinion of the map is different.

Oh crap. Seems like I didn't sound negative enough. :)

I must say I really liked Simo Malinen's huge maps, of which Maintenance Complex was (IIRC) the largest. Definitely not a good choice to play if you're looking for something quick and simple, but if you're willing to spend an afternoon on it (it will take something like 1.5 - 2 hours, if not more), then it's something you can really immerse yourself in.
I do recall spending some time wondering where the hell to go next, but it wasn't a huge amount of time, and I didn't need to look at the map in an editor to solve it.

When an editor needs to be opened in order to know where to go next, there's something wrong with the map design. I think that it's best when the player has to look around on where to go next now and then, just as long as it doesn't take a year.

Agreed on that unless you´re aiming at some exploration oriented gameplay... Doom maps use to have a fast gameplay even if they´re long and finding the way usually is a question of trying a couple of paths. I think that finding the way around the level is a part of the fun and the puzzles but in some maps it´s made so difficult like when a switch opens a door you don´t even hear or know where it is.

7 point reviews dont exist. its 3-5-8, with 0 points for edits of old reviews. Really awful submissions can sometimes result in negative points.
But in the past you used to give 1 point for having edited a review, isnt it?

what was it all about??? these old threads remind me how much I miss the way these forums were a few years ago, plenty of characters posting. I still like those old Plexydome maps. When I think about it a lot of those old legacy maps are mostly pretty interesting considering all the 'new at the time' features they were using. I would love enough spare time to remake some of my own maps the way they should have been if I hadnt rushed them out.
