You could try ZdoomGl during this time...
And NO: no bugged beta, PLEASE!!!

But... Hurry up, guys, because I begin to be very tired to wait after it, and I think seriously to use ZdoomGl instead of Legacy!!
Zdoom is made by ONE man, and it's well alive... The OpenGl version is made by ONE man and it's well alive... Jdoom is made by ONE man and it's well alive...
What are you doing during this time?!?
In the past, I had no problem to defend Legacy, when it was under attack. But today, I can't continue: the difference is too big, now, and NOTHING is happening since a too long time!!!
I know perfectly that you are all making it on your free time, but it's the same thing for the other ports, and those ones are well developped...

So, tell us WHEN it will be available, PLZ.

That said, I wish you a happy new year, and I want to thank you all for the great job made on Legacy.
It was the best port ! *grin*

.
..
...
Ok, I wasn't serious when I said that I think to leave Legacy, but... Today, Legacy is no more the best port, and here, I'm very serious! *shocked*

Sorry to bug you with my *cry*

I'm beginning to agree with Jive. Unfortunatly. Legacy has always been one of favorite ports, and still is. But the other ports seem to be getting new features at a much faster pace. And it makes it easier to get pulled away from Legacy.

PS: Try GZdoom

Heh, there have been three alphas.

As for Legacy being dead, it's been rewritten from scratch. The bugged alphas have features not present in 1.42, like HeXen. Other ports were slow when they got rewrites too, like JDoom for example. That was a long time ago now though.

Speaking of features, I noticed those vanilla DooM 3D bridges work in 1.42, even in GL. When did that get slipped in?

I can't believe we're still getting comments and questions like these?

Zdoom is made by ONE man, and it's well alive... The OpenGl version is made by ONE man and it's well alive... Jdoom is made by ONE man and it's well alive...
Well guess what? Legacy is currently being redone by ...wait for it... ONE man (no offence to the other contributers of course :p).

What are you doing during this time?!?
Smite is doing absolutely nothing, obviously. That is why 'nothing' is happening.

Seriously, do you expect a new thread and a news post about every bug that's squashed and feature that's implimented, regardless of how minor?

Ok, I wasn't serious when I said that I think to leave Legacy, but... Today, Legacy is no more the best port, and here, I'm very serious! *shocked*
Shame, better start tearing down DLW now then, eh? Since when was Legacy ever advertised as 'The Best Port'?

All those "plz"es and stupid rolling smilies made me die a little on the inside...

It's true; there aren't a lot of people working on Legacy. Smite did most of the C++ porting and Hurdler has been busy with new graphics stuff (in addition to a dev job...). Other than that there have just been minor additions by guys like Darkwolf.

Planky

As others have pointed out, we more or less have only one person working on Legacy with the addition of Hurdlers work on the renderer. Neither are able to devote as much time as others port maintainers do.

I'm certain we are all greatful for the work that has been and will be done.

I would say, if someone asked me (something that will never happen *bawl*)

*Drop hi-color/hi-res textures!
*Concentrate in a simple opengl renderer! Or just use the old one.... if its possible. Just encapsulate the old functions. I think that this should have been the first step for a 2.0 version, because it seems to be the biggest issue the Legacy team has.
*Concentrate on the net code!
*Concentrate on the scripting engine!
*Forget everything else..

And we may have a winner......

In a last case, just continue to put some work on a possible 1.45 version.

Please, tell us when a POSSIBLE version will come out.. Just an aprox. date.

1. You better run after suggesting that, or boingo will be after you with face paint and a rubber nose!
2. The old one needed replacing. I imagine it would be just as much work to get the current renderer to work with 2.0 as it would be to write a new one.
3. Already being done.
4. Already being done (ACS Scripting).
5. What else is there?

Like Planky said, the olde GL renderer is broken. It does a poor job with things like t-joins, the dynlights don't blend nicely, there are frustrating sky bugs (look around the skylight in E2M1 for an example), Several features in the software renderer don't work in GL, and the code is probably a hairball after five years. Encapsulating that is an ugly idea at best.

That said, I noticed a couple nice thing creeped into it recently like vanilla Doom 3D bridges, and coronas that seem to be drawn more where you would expect them.

Go Hurdler! *thumbs*

It does, I think. In fact, I don´t know if the software renderer will be changed at all. That´s something that only Smite-Meister could talk about.

I agree, and you are right to tell it!!!

If you don't want to do that, STFU.
What?!?
Who are you to tell me such a thing?!?

I think that I contributed LARGELY to Legacy with all of my work and my site (plus what you don't even mind during the development with Hurdler), entirely dedicated to this port exclusively!!!
DLW was visited nearly 1 million of times... (my counter has been deleted by someone when it has reached the number of 850 000 )

So, you have NO RIGHT to tell me to contribute more than what I already done, and what I do actually with all of the new entries for DLW!!! *mad*

DooMAD
December 29th, 2005, 10:02 AM
Sorry Jive, but DLW doesn't grant you a right to complain about the development of the port. Plenty of people put time and effort into Legacy projects, but unless you are working on the port itself, there's no point in complaining about it. It won't get done any faster just because people bitch about it.

Darkwolf, stop attacking Jive. The fact remains that Legacy will take as long as it takes. Asides from whining about it, we can do nothing except wait. Leave it at that.

MR_ROCKET
December 30th, 2005, 01:44 AM
Going by Jives first post up on the new Legacy, I think he just cant wait for it's next release like the rest of us, But we'v gotta lighten up a bit guys, I mean we all know Hurdlers been gone working at Ubisoft for like the past year and he's just got back- give him time to shift gears, as Smite said he's working on the netcode and Hurdlers working on the renderer..so I'd imagine after all the moving around, taking turns with code, the Doom blood sweat and tears, they would be more than happy to have it finished. Set 0' down, I think what would help in this matter is if Hurdler or Smite pop'd in from time to time and let us know whats up with its development, I geuss the TODO list has got needed update dust on it.

Anyhows, now Jive and Darkwolf, haven't you guys been like hang'n out Here in the same place for years now? I thought we were all friends by now? Wouldn't it be a little weird to start crap with each other now? lol
Well, I do fess up to shooting Danij666 with a spitball one time..Hey it was all good fun, I swear! - but that's besides the point. Just because my Text is bigger than yours..

How about we all just have a Doom Legacy shaped beer while we wait for it's release?
that and talk about how cool we are an stuff, well starting with me of course.*grin*

The problem with free projects is that you can't base your life around them for long. Sooner or later they have to be put aside at least a little, there's just no way around that. Take me for example. I used to maintain a manual, an editing site, not to mention DMN and Discharge, and all of it was fun at the time but life moves forward. There's different jobs to work at, people to spend time with, and now writing takes up a very large chunk of every day for me. That's the way it goes. I'd like to spend more time working on maps and projects, the manual, the review sites, and if days were 48 hours long and we all lived to be 200 years old I would be. :) I still show up here fairly regularily to pitch in where I can because I still care. If you care you'll always come back, you'll be patient, and the thing you care about will never die or disappear. It's only when you stop giving a shit that things get bad. Be patient, if it's meant to be it's meant to be, baby. If you really want results you'll offer encouragement to Spite and Hurdler, not knock them down. That'll only make it feel less worth it to keep going. Just have faith, do what you gotta do to keep your interest in the game, and be patient. That's the way life works, you wait for It, It don't wait for you. :)

The CVS has been updated twice in three days, that's more than enough to prove that the developers are still working. For anyone who still thinks it's taking too long, read the entire On Compatibility thread (http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=28605) and see the sheer volume of information that Smite and Hurdler have to contend with and keep under consideration while creating this new version.

There are some screens of it floating around in one of the developement threads. You're welcome to go digging, because I'm much too lazy to do it. :)

Last screen we saw was rendering everything in rainbow-coloured polygons that showed off how the nodes were working. Was pretty in a psychodelic way. :D
