I felt very good, because it wasn't so easy (hurt me plenty-skill :D ). Now i have completed Doom 1+2 several times, of course without cheats :D

Congrats, it only took you 11 years to finish Doom II.

Well I originally couldn't figure out how the beat level 30, so I had to go online to find out I was supposed to shoot Baphomet in the Brain, and it took quite a few deaths to do it. But after completing it I felt a sense of accomplishment, followed by a sense of wow I just wasted a whole lot of my life on this video game.

You know? I can't remember what I felt. But I remember saying "Finally", when I finished Doom3...

Oh... a little bit of crap culture... CU is the brasillian word that describes the little hole people generally have in their bottons... Yeah... it's a very ugly word.

Oh! But I did notice it was meant to mean SEE YOU. :P

It didn't take me long to get through Doom 2 without cheating. The thrill always was to find the way and not not to die. This made me excited and focused enough to finish the game rather fast without dying. First in "Hey, not too rough", then in the harder skill levels. It didn't feel to good when I was at the end, because then I knew that's all, and nothing else is ahead.

And that, my friend, is why there are a million level replacements available for the game. :p

It's too bad not every game can be moddable...

Well I beat the ultimate doom without cheating at first. That was when I was in like 4th grade. But then in 5th grade I only played doom games with cheats so I beat Ult Doom, doom 2, TNT, and plutonia all with cheats. Now I got the wads again and played it with doom legacy with ASDW and mouselook because it's impossible for me to play the oldway anymore, and I beat them all normally. I had trouble with episode 3 an ultra hard at first. And at first I could NOT get past doom 2 on ultra hard. THe only reason it's hard is U run out of ammo. But now I can beat em all. I'm too scared to try plutonia on ultra hard though. It's f'ing hard enough already on easy mode. Or maybe I can play it now. It was back when I was little that it was f'ing hard.

i feel like that with almost every game. "aww... over already?"
at the end of H-L 2 i thought "great, gotta wait a few more years now...."

when i first killed sin it was cheating, with fists. later on i replayed doom2 in ultra and blew the crap out of it. it felt good.
nowhere near as good as it did when i found DoomBuilder tho.

The first time I cleared Doom 2 I did it using the arrow keys and the six ones above them for strafe, shoot, etc., because I couldn't get the fucking mouse going with it. That was satisfying. It's a bloody good game.

Holy cow, jester! You dug up a year-old post to tell us that? No offense, mate, but you'd have been better off starting a new thread.

And yes, I too was a keyboarder for the longest time, and I completed the entire game using no cheats and just the keyboard. I even made demos of each level, with 100% kills.

I think I was searching for something in the forums, and then just saw that post and thought of the reply. Can't actually remember what I was searching for.. considering it was yesterday though that doesn't exactly make my memory impressive.

I beat Doom 1 with the original engine (no launcher) a while ago (actually several years of a while ago), I got to something like map 20 of Doom II with the original engine but later with launchers I beat all levels individually

[Edit] Oh, I should've read the posts above, sorry.

How do you beat plutonia and tnt? i'm stuck on the last level on both, where there's a giant skull thing on the wall that shoots skull boxes out.

It's been a while since I played Final DooM, but if I remember correctly the end boss is the same as the one in DooM2. If you look closely, you will find that the "giant skull thing on the wall" is shooting "skull boxes" out of its forehead. You need to get 2-3 rockets into that gap in its forehead. There should be either a lift or platform nearby, so your best bet is to get to the top of those and send your rockets into the forehead gap.

I was really proud of myself when I beat ultimate doom and doom2, i only play on ultra violence and that goes for wads too. I remember being disappointed with the doom conversions to psx since even on max difficulty the levels are way easier, theres more ammo and less monsters compared to doom95. I have vast quantities of free time.

I used to use cheats for "training purposes". After a while I tried it without them. IDDQD has taught me well.

Good point, especially the phrase "training purposes".

I agree that using cheats for limited purposes, especially when the player is completely stumped at any point in the game, is acceptable. In the end, though, we play DooM to have fun and be challenged. Constantly using cheats defeats that objective.

I used to use cheats all the time when i was a little tyke. but I've given non-cheating a shot roughly 9 years ago. (I was 4 years old when I was first introduced to the game in 1993). I had first completed the whole game without cheating about 3 years ago. (I never really wanted to play through the whole thing.) At this point, Doom 2 and Ultimate doom are "easy" (I always play ultra-violence) aside from Ultimate Doom's Episode 4. TNT and Plutonia Experiment are more my type, but I had recently completed those two games as well.

At this point, The only times I cheat are when testing my own maps to see if my linedefs work correctly. Then I play again without cheating to check if there's a good enough amount of ammo and health.

I prefer to cheat than to do something I've already done. Exemple, I've done Doom 1 and 2 on UV with no cheats. I barely ever play them again without any kind of "cheating", simply because cheating make the experience difference, instead of the whole same thing I have done already.

There are plenty of ways you can make maps (including the original id maps) a new and interesting challenge without resorting to cheat codes.

For a start there are the standard demo categories: Max (UV, all kills and all secrets); Fast (like Max but with the -fast parameter); Tyson (UV, killing everything using only weapons 1 and 2), Pacifist (UV, reaching the exit without directly/intentionally harming any monsters), NM (play with -skill 5 and reach the exit), and a few others. That's starting a map from scratch with just the pistol in each case, and no saving. In each case, the faster you can do it, the better. And then you can do movie runs, taking a bunch of maps (a full episode, or maps 01-10, 11-20 or 21-30), again with no saving, of course.

And if that is still too easy (though I don't know anyone who finds NM movies too easy...), you can try them without running, or only moving backwards, or getting the most kills you can using no ammo, etc., etc.

Though personally, I generally prefer to find new challenges in the many high-quality pwads that have been made. In any case, playing with cheat codes is surely not the best way to enhance your Doom experience.

Cheat is not the best way for the first time.

A lot of your challenges are too hard, too frustrating for me, and for most aren't my style. I prefer playing with cheats :P

Best enjoyment though is to play the game in co-op, in my opinion ( with a good port though.. Doom Legacy is the only one that made it really fun, since you can have really fast respawning items, monsters that predict where you go etc) making the experience a whole lot funnier. Playing on NM in co-op is a blast when both are good at UV but can't do NM yet :P

Sad thing is playing Co-op is only really fun with friendly people, which means mostly friends, making it hard to get a match (depends on your friends.. mine all hate doom but one).

Every year, I use Doomsday, and play through Ultimate, Doom II and Final Doom, all levels, in order. Not all at once, but over a course of months... so much so, in fact, that I recognize levels immediately (Oh not THIS one again) or (Yes, this level rocks!).

I have just solidified myself as the saddest of all of you. *what*

Not by a long shot. Several players have spent well over 5,000 hours playing Doom.

Actually I do that too, but only with Ultimate doom. Except i go "this level rocks!" with every Episode 1 map, and "omg I hate this map" with every level in the other episodes aside from the first ones. Reason why? they are really long and boring and I can never remember where all the keys are hidden. Where as Episode 1 is pretty easy to figure out. I think John Romero was the best level designer out of all the doom crew. To this day, I still consider even E1M1 to be pretty well detailed.

I felt accomplished a long time ago when I beat SNES DOOM 1 on the easiest difficulty,it is a challenging game.Just really got into it,bought DOOM for PS1.It always felt good when I cleared a game on a new difficulty, then finally max, that was the best.Kept playing it over,on max,but the challenge was gone. Now I have final DOOM for PS1,and still have higher difficulties to clear.Sweet.

It took my girlfriend about 2-3 months to beat Doom 2 on the skill level right before UV (can't think of what it is ATM). Right now, she's working her way through Heretic. I think she's about half way through episode 3.

I would have to agree that E1M1 is more intricate that many subsequent maps, which used bigger, broader, blocky geometry, where KDitD somehow made for more interesting levels.
