Do you consider all the modded versions of doom still doom?
You know doom is futuristic and heretic is medieval. Can you actually make a 1940's version of doom where you have WWII weapons instead? and change the wall textures and weapon sprites?

Actually, Heretic is based on the Doom engine with a couple modifications. That doesn't make it a modded version of Doom. Many games are built on another game's engine.
For example, Hexen II is based on the Quake engine but there's no way I would consider Hexen II a modded version of Quake.

I think that heretic is just a doom modification. It has the same types of weapons, same types of monsters, and such. Only the items really separate the two. Of course, the levels and textures are made to fit the theme better, but no, the two games are pretty much the same.
I'm sure that some mods for doom change the game more than heretic did.
Considering this, I think that Quake 4 is more of a mod to Doom 3 than a totally new game, while Doom 3 is an independant game compared to other games, due to it's superior new engine.
Quake and Hexen 2, however, have loads of differences. Different classes, different weapons, different monsters, different levels, and more. Even the engine has been tweaked some, having smoother animations and such.

Back in the day, FPS games were known as "Doom clones".

I had hoped I didn't need to add a "j/k"

What about Hexen? It's also made for the Doom engine. Is it just a modded Heretic or Doom?

I think hexen changed doom and heretic too much to get passed the boundary to be modded. Heretic is modded because the weapons are almost exactly the same as in doom. Hexen has completely different weapons and has a hub system that it is not considered modded.

Doom3 and Commander Keen share one line of code, is Doom3 a Keen clone?

I think you are going too far. Heretic and doom share all but a few lines of code which makes it a doom clone. In your case, that makes every game a doom clone which isn't.
I'm saying is it possible to take doom, tweak the game to look like another game and sell it to make money just like what heretic did? Of course Id must be on the box.
IMO if FPS were rated as doom clones, from being the most like a doom clone to being the least like a doom clone from the games I played, I think the list should be like this...
Heretic
Duke nukem 3d
some games in between
hexen
and soforth.

Duke nukem 3d
Ahh, but duke nukem had a far more advanced engine.
I draw the doom clone line to hexen/strife. Both games play differently enough compared to doom. Hexen is still a bit like doom, but strife definatly isn't. Strife is THE doom engine game, in my opinion.

Heretic is not a Doom engine, but haevily modified one, so it's no way a Doom mod. NO WAY!!!!!!!
Changes:
Heretic supports:
1. Pushable objects
2. Wind / object blown by wind
3. Gib particles that randomly fly all over when monster is killed (look at gargole death)
4. Inventory
5. Object bouncing
6. Burning death
7. Object that have inertia
8. Monsters waoling in water
...
If this is not a heavy DOOM engine modification actully to make it a separate engine, than I don't know what heavy modification is. It's like Hexen relative to Heretic, when hexen supports map scripts, different sound types, rotating sectors, waves, jumping, moving multipayered skies....It's like calling Hexen a mod of Heretic ...silly
