I was just curious how the OpenGL renderer is coming along. We haven't seen Hurdler since April.

I think Ubi ate Hurdler. ;)

I met Hurdler in Montreal in August. He said he was busy but he really wanted to do the new renderer. At the time he said he couldn't do it until at least after september-october. Haven't heard anything since...

Maybe he's quietly working on the new render :P

If Pate stands correct, can we really talk of a deadline for this year? :(

Legacy doesn't need a software mode to be complete. Hardware mode may come later after 2.0 is released.

You mean, doesn't need a hardware mode to be complete? the hardware mode may come later. meh?

yes, sorry, I meant Hardware.

Hey! Legacy 2.0 NEEDS hardware!

:( Software Legacy runs like crap on both of my computers.

Run it at standard Doom resolution..300x200 at least should be fine. If that doesn't help then man, you need a video card :P
Although the c++ version in software runs pretty good for me at a higher res than 1.42. -not only, the c++ version also lets me select higher resolutions. up to 1600x1200.

Legacy always has ran better in Opengl though. Smoov like butter. I cant wait to see how it runs when Hurdler pops the Opengl in it either, unless someone else on the legacy Dev team does? Hopefully Ubi hasnt eattin Hurdler because we all know what he's capable of.;) I remeber that engine he was working on awile back, was pretty cool. Is it still hosted somewhere?
Or did Rellik delete it?*ohmy* *rofl*

"Standard Doom resolution" is 320x200. But I have a GeForce 6600, P4 3.0 gHz, 1 gig of RAM. Framerates below 15 in software mode are unacceptable!

Wow...1600x1200?! 0_o

Heh at first i was thinking Doom was 320x240, but no it was lower.. I think it is 300x200 but sorta hard to tell without a selection. Anyways, is it running better for you at a low res?
I'm just using an older ati 9200, frame rates fine.. oh and make that 1360x1024 fullscreen and 1280x1024 windowed. And get this, I get a better frame rate at 1360 ,even in fullscreen vs some of the 1200x selections.
I havn't checked how many fps its getting but it feels about a almost 30, pretty smooth. crazy huh? at that high of a res..

Donno why I was thinkin 1600x1200 heh musta been thinking of my desktop res, bad as iori up there. ;P
A 6600 should run it sweet, heh wierd. Glad we posted our specs now the devs know it.

Bah, can only go up to 1440x900. I'm off to play Zdoom at 2048x1536.

Your video card wouldn't really matter when it comes to software mode. That's why it's called software mode - all the calculations are done on the CPU through the software. (If I'm wrong, please enlighten me!)

And since CPUs have enough else to do, they obviously aren't meant for high resolutions in 3d this and that. That's why we have video cards, and hardware APIs like OpenGL and DirectX. That moves more of the calcutions to the GPU on the video card - let it do the work. It's what they're made to do.

I seriously doubt them releasing Legacy 2.0 without OpenGL support...

Impossible, unless the problem is from your end. I have an Athlon64 3800+, 1gb ram and a 6600GT, and it runs at 35fps solid.

You'll all live without hardware mode for a bit - it's understandable why it's not available immediately. And if this answer still doesn't satisfy, go play jnoom.

Try running Legacy in 640x480 software mode with a 2mb video card and tell me if you get usable framrates despite your CPU :D

Now everyone be good little biscuts and run it at a DooM standard resolution :)
I think it is pretty nice though that the c++ alpha runs its highest res for me with a good frame rate. Just think how Opengl will run "when the time comes"..

/me does the Rocket shuffle.. a skitta a skitta skatta.

Any chance of someone dragging Hurdler over to drop us a quick line in the thread? Someone wanna shoot him a "What's up?" email?

Could you release pre-beta version without OpenGL support? I think you have already done a huge amount of work. Some offtopic: did you release something newer as 1.99 alpha3?

Aliotroph?
January 9th, 2006, 10:07 AM
I'm fairly certain there are three alphas floating around, although they may have vanished from the boards because I don't know that there were any real binaries on Sourceforge. Digging around in here will find you answers (heh, I guess it's like a treasure hunt :D ).

Alpha 3 Download (http://www.hut.fi/u/vberghol/doom/doomlegacy_199alpha3_win32.zip)
The links for Alpha 1 and 2 don't work anymore, so thats all you get.

Aliotroph?, I know about three alphas. I even have posted a link to alpha3 on iddqd.ru, but it's a bit unstable. It has many bugs even in doom mode. I realize, it's alpha, it _may_ be buggy. But now developers have something better. I apologize, something really better. Why they wouldn't release pre-beta with all the done work in? W/o OpenGL? (my comp is unable to render something in OpenGL :) )

MR_ROCKET

From what I can tell, they want to release the beta with a working netcode and Smite said he wants to have that functioning properly before Hurdler puts the Opengl in.
Something to that degree.

I would just like to see some sort of timetable. Not something for the team to work by, but something for the community to see so we know when things are expected to be done.

Nah. How about a status ticker in this forum? May make the wait bearable... :)

iori
January 9th, 2006, 05:02 PM
There is no timetable or ticker or anything, nor will there ever be one at this stage in the game. It's almost impossible to judge 'how much there is left'. All you can expect is that it's being worked on. Opengl may or may not be worked on at this point. This is not an organized software develpment company, just a couple of guys working on it in their spare time, as has been said numerous times. I suggest finding a hobby or something, as a watched pot never boils.
