View Full Version : Legacy Wiki Proposal

A few source ports seem to be launching wikis so that users can provide documentation, technical info and tutorials to people who are making wads. I think it would be useful for Legacy to have a wiki, particularly when 2.0 is released as there will be lots of new features to document.
I have a spare SQL database if there isn't a more suitable host. There are free hosts, but they tend to be very unreliable. I was planning to host Frades' Legacy Editing Manual, but Frades doesn't have enough spare time to write tutorials to cover everything in full detail all by himself. It would be nice to involve the developers and all the people who contribute to the CVS and make an official wiki to cover everything.
Primarily, this is just an idea at the moment, but if people would be interested in using such a resource and we can find a number of suitable people to moderate it, I think we could have a really successful project.

I dont see harm in using that wiki for your idea. Still, it would be nicer to have one on the actual legacy site. I could shift the faq to it and can the faq forum.

I know there's already lots of Legacy content on the Doom Wiki (partly because I've contributed to some of it :p ), but wikicities has been having alot of downtime lately. It's also quite handy to have as the main Legacy site isn't updated all that often. Having the FAQ on the Legacy site is a good point, but it could do far more than that. Every time someone submits a new FS function, or a new feature is added, someone just has to edit a wiki page. In short, everything you need to know about Legacy in one website.

Well, you have my support. Would mean no more having to look at that godawful DLER site of relliks anymore :D
Perhaps while it is being started, we limit who can add/edit articles until we get a good base to work from. Better still, set it up on your db and get it going then shift it to the main legacy site.

...set it up on your db and get it going then shift it to the main legacy site.
Is that possible? mySQL databases on my server are set up with one of those admin control panel things, so unfortunately there isn't a database file that I can just copy from my FTP folder. Not one that I can find anyway, so if I set it up on my server, it may have to be there permanently.

If need be, I have a dedicated server with plenty of webspace and transfer (1Tb/mo). If someone would like to put up for a domain, I would be glad to host whatever you guys need.

Wikis are fun. :D
You guys should see the article about the first French empire on Wikipedia. It was lifted from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica and man is it BAD. :D

What, the first french empire or the article?

LOL The article mostly. It spends all its time ranting about Napolean and how evil/cool he was without bothering to talk about the bloody empire.

Wiki = Good Idea. But it'd be better to have all the information about Legacy inside the actual documents as Planky said. Wish they'd been updated.

I give this Wiki idea three and a half big orange pumpkins! Which on the Pumpkinsmasher scale from one pumpkin seeds to Four and Three-quarters Green PumpkinSmashing Hammers, is pretty darn good.

Wikis are bad, but whatever you do i think you should make your own, (not use wikipedia or wikis).
you could easy make somthing with php (with or without mysql) where uses could edit pages, i suggest you only let members edit pages, as there is alot of open proxy users who would love to annoy people by editing.
it wont help moch if some one is using open proxys to ban him, he propley got a list with hundreds of proxy servers he can use togetter with a script.
and dont call it Wiki, it sounds like you are using or supporting Wikipedia.
it would be cool for any source port having a site where members can help making turtoials ETC, people who is not a member propley isent a part of the project, and shouldent be allowed to write turtoials.
im shure you can find some one to write you a script where those who want to help can make an account, and start writing turtoials. You would propley also want a search function. Shouldent be a problem with Mysql, it will work slow without i think.

I never said that.

I suspect we won't allow anonymous access to the Legacy Wiki, but I dont think we should limit it to a certain group of editors - it defeats the purpose of being a wiki.

Why create a custom thing to do something wikimedia achieves quite nicely without any hassle?

Exactly. There is nothing wrong with Wikis. And no, it doesn't imply you're supporting Wikipedia (I wouldn't mind if it did). Wikis are quite clever and useful for projects. I've worked in a couple labs that used them to get stuff done. Very efficient, flexible and simple. No need to reinvent the wheel, only to have less functionality.
Vandalism is a problem in some cases, as are bad edits an revert wars, etc. These can be moderated.

All it really comes down to is that the info provided is accurate. And more importantly, useful. I support either way as long as those two things are true.

Wikipedia does not own the word wiki, it merely uses it. And so what if someone is uses Wikipedia, that's what it's there for.

For those who aren't familiar with the concept of wikis, have a look at the Doom Wiki (http://doom.wikicities.com/) to get an idea of what we're up to. We have begun work on the Doom Legacy Wiki, but it's not ready yet. Hopefully it shouldn't be too long before we're ready for a public launch. Once we have a rough framework and some basic content in place, expect an announcement for the grand opening. :)

I have not idea why, but doomad's link points to doom.wikicites.com/< br/> - yet when I click edit, it doesnt show it. If anyone else has this issue, just remove the <br/> at the end of the url.

The mysterious line break which appeared in the link is now removed.

I was thinking about adding some stuffs to the 3dfloor part but someone has already beat me to it.:P although I think a small list of the various 3dfloor data types that can be used should be added to the Simple 3D floors page. No one ever seems to mention (306-total transparent solid) in some of the other editing info pages around which is also a handy data type.
Also make sure to add type 305 to the 3d lighting page, very useful data type for like making light shine threw windows with z height, requires no hex color info like the other 3d light types.
And was thinking of fixin up the launcher setup page, but Planky's working on a sorta reversion of the launcher source, so I wasn't sure if I should wait on that..
And on installation, what about the install wizard thingy?, didn't Exl or someone make a real install package for legacy? if not hell I can make that and actually include the shareware doom wad with it this time around. - need feed back first.
Probably either a standard rar-sfx or an inno-setup wizard.

Wait for Legacy 2.0 to appear. Then do a Wiki. :)
Since we know most of the features that will be included in 2.0, we can start documenting them now. It's better to have the content in place before the release of the port so that people can get a head start on their wads. For example, I want to make use of BEX in one of my projects, which I understand will be supported in 2.0, so there will be a section for that on the wiki.
